A decent budget ice skate.
The skates are more than sufficient for casual ice skating, and are certainly nicer than the rentals one usually sees most places. The appearance is rather understated and is attractive for those who don't like loud designs on their skates. The laces could be thicker for sure, and a bit more padding around the ankle area would be nice. The standard sizes are on the wider side, which is nice for folks like me who have issues with overly-narrow fitting boots. The only issue is that the "pre-sharpened" blades just don't cut it. The pair I received, the left skate had almost no left/right traction and was rather dangerous to try and skate on. I ended up bringing them both in to the local expert shop to get the blades sharpened properly and afterwards they worked great.
Great skates, but don't go by REI's sizing chart
The skates are great for a beginner like me. They are comfortable and warm. Tried them tonight on a neighborhood ice rink and, although a little loose up top, I got the hang of it and it was not an issue. The only knock on this purchasing experience was trying to figure out my size. REI and a few other sites state they run the same as your shoe size, but Bauer's own site says to go down a size from your shoe size. I'm a 10 1/2 and went with Bauer's recommended size 10. Fits perfect.
