Designed for riding on trails, there are several common features you might find on a mountain bike helmet:

• Chin bar: A wraparound bar protects more of your face and side of your head, especially handy if you're likely to fall into bushes or trees.
• Visor: When you're out on sunny days, a visor helps shade your eyes.
• Camera mount: Many helmets are built to accept an action camera to record your ride.
• MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System): MIPS technology allows the foam liner of the helmet to move slightly during impact, protecting against rotational trauma.

How to Care for Your Helmet

A great day on the trail can leave your helmet caked in mud and grit. Don't use chemical solvents, which can damage the materials of your helmet. Stick to mild soap, water and a soft cloth.

Store your helmet somewhere with moderated temperatures (not an overly hot or cold attic or garage).

When to Replace Your Helmet

Be sure to replace your helmet after any accident. Helmets are designed to absorb a single impact. Even if you don't see any damage, you should get a new one. Even if you're accident-free, replace your helmet every five years, as some materials can break down with normal use and time.
