Awesome Watch. It's Going Back.
This is unquestionably a top tier fitness device. It’s the best piece of fitness technology you can wear on your wrist in 2026 (but you can probably get a much better value fitness device). For the past 9 months, I’ve been using an Instinct Crossover AMOLED for everything from MTB, to CrossFit, to surfing, to running, but thought I wanted the advanced mapping features of the Fenix. The Fenix does a ton of stuff most users won't ever need, want, or even know what to do with. But navigating on it is great, actually. I got it for a MTB trip to Durango Colorado. I've never been to Durango before and was going to rely a lot on pre-loaded routes/courses to explore the area. For that, it worked fantastically. I bought the Garmin handlebar mount and put it on the bars. It worked great. I used a HRM200 for all the heart rate tracking. The mapping was spot-on and following a route was so easy. If you’re wondering why I was using this instead of an Edge series bike computer, it’s because I also do a lot of trail running and hiking and this can do all of it; the Edge is a bit of a 1-trick pony. I have to say, the Fenix 9 was an absolute champ on the trip. I’ve also used it surfing, strength training, CrossFit, running road and trails, and as an every day watch. It’s seriously the best fitness watch you can get. However the value is somewhat questionable. You could probably get a Fenix 8 or even a 7 that will perform about 95% as well as this for several hundred dollars less. Having said that, the Fenix 9 doesn’t leave much to be desired in the way of features, build quality, or usefulness. I have about 7.5” wrists and the 47mm is perfect. My older Epix Pro Gen2 was 51mm and it was just too bulky. 47mm is the sweet spot. So it’s an awesome watch. But I've come to love my Instinct Crossover AMOLED so much, and this just couldn't replace it. The analog hands, G-Shock aesthetic, and value of the Crossover just can’t be beaten by the Fenix. Advanced mapping aside, the Instinct Crossover is a much better value. The Crossover does do mapping, just not the feature-rich, detailed topographic mapping the Fenix series can do. Also, I’m a bit of a watch nerd and that Crossover has charm. So there's that. In the month I tested this out, the Crossover was the one I wanted to wear every day, all day. I was considering keeping both in a 2-watch rotation but it’s a bit hard to justify the money for a feature I’d really only need a few times a year. On local trails, advanced mapping is really unnecessary. So it’s going back. Not because it isn’t a great watch. It is. But that Instinct Crossover AMOLED has that kind of charm the Fenix just can’t compete with.
Huge improvement over the Fenix 8
Great device. I love how light the titanium feels and how bright and responsive the display is. I had a few challenges with the Fenix 8 that have definitely been addressed so far in my experience with the Fenix 9.
Just not much of an improvement (Garmin.com Purch)
This review is upgrading from the Epix 2 47mm to 47mm version of this watch. There are many aspects of this watch which are an upgrade. However, when you factor in the 2 main issues, 1. Poor included watch faces 2. Price 3. Garmin connector It is really not much of an upgrade. 1. None of the decent looking digital watch face pre-selects allow as much data as the epix 2 (default face). There should be at least 2 more addable fields in the default watch face. It's bonkers I have to make this many compromises in 2026/27. 2. Price (Self explanatory) 3. Again it's 26/27 you would think we could have a technology that you don't need to mechanically modify (squeezing the metal fitting with some type of small pliers) just to keep charging your device every few months.
