Don't judge by the first practice
I had a bit of buyers remorse after my first vinyasa practice with this mat and considered returning it. I didn't do the salt treatment and was slipping far too much. But I wiped it down with the manduka mat wash and gave it another go the next day and it was like magic. I can't imagine one practice truly broke it in so I'm guessing it had some sort of film on it that I washed off. So I suggest at the very least giving the mat a quick clean before your first practice. Each time I use it it seems to have a bit more grip. Also I was concerned it would be too thick for good balance but it doesn't give much so it's improved my one-leg balancing poses (less falling!)
Ridiculous break in
I searched for the best reviewed super thick mat and this was it. Didn’t realize the crazy “break in” that the manufacturer expects a user to do. Rub the whole mat with course salt and use it regularly for months and THEN it will be a good mat?! The YouTube videos praising this thing sound like a cult. On my first use the mat was so slippery I couldn’t do a basic down dog. After many washes and cumbersome/messy grinds with course salt I gave up. I took a 6” orbital sander to the mat with 40 grit paper, ridiculous. It is now just barely grippy enough to use. Probably do another few passes with 40grit on the power sander. How is this a high rated product?!
The best yoga mat I've ever used
I bought this about 4 months ago in the store because I couldn't feel my bones pressing through the mat when I squeezed my fingers through it. I do yoga every day on a concrete floor, including headstands and forearm balances, so I need a mat that is not too "squishy" (it's hard to balance when the ground moves around underneath you) but that will keep my bones from grinding on the concrete. I've been through a LOT of options, many of them quite expensive, some layered variations of mats, and this is hands down the best mat I've ever used. It's the only one anyone should ever use on a concrete floor. It has a great grip surface; you wash it once when you get it home and it's ready to go.
Sweaty yogis beware
This mat would get five stars but it has one major flaw: it becomes a slip 'n slide the minute you start to sweat. I used this mat for an entire year, hoping that breaking it in would help remove any slickness. I had to ultimately return it because I could barely hold my poses during heated and non-heated classes. Putting a yoga towel on top worked well, but for the price, I didn't want a mat I could only use with another product. However, there are some good qualities about this mat too! The thickness is amazing and will cradle your joints and bones. Also, its a breeze to clean because it does not absorb moisture. But if you do sweat, this may not be the brand for you.
Yoga my heart
I LOVE this yoga mat! Its made beautifully and very very durable! I'm still bouncing back from a back injury and building my core back up, but even when I'm having a day full o struggles on the mat, I always feel secure on the Manduka Pro. I would highly recommend it! I even met up with a mom friend of mine while our kids were at a daytime summer camp, we planned to get some yoga in while we waited for them and she showed up with a bright orange Manduka Pro too! Very durable, great quality, no movement beneath me when I'm up and down on the mat. I haven't had to season it yet because it was pretty much ready to use out of the box. Because I got the black color option I thought it would show a lot more dirt and dust when left rolled out in my studio, but it cleans off really well too.
Great grip but only when dry
Even at room temperature, I'm normally dripping sweat after about 15 minutes in a Yoga session. After having tried various mats, I never found one that I would not slip on if my hands and feet were wet. So, I went for the most comfortable mat. Using a towel (either thin cotton gym towel or Manduka microfiber towel), I eliminated the slipping when wet problem. The width of this mat is just right for knees out child's pose (for me at 5' 7"). The mat is heavier than most mats - I would not want to lug it around all day or travel on a plane with it, but if you're driving to the studio/gym, it's manageable. In return, it's comfortable without requiring any folding or additional layers to keep knees comfortable.
My knees say thanks!
I'ev never paid this much for a mat before, and I thought the price was a bit much. But this seems to be worth every penny. I regularly do positions where I'm down on all fours and then I lift the opposite arms and legs. On my old, cheap mat I'd have to first stop and put a folded towel under my knee because the kneecap just ground into the floor in the most unpleasant way. That wasted time because I had to move it from one knee to the other. And it still was unpleasant. Not anymore. This mat is excellent. I can kneel on it with no problems. I've also heard others say it lasts forever, so it will save me money in the long run, since I won't have to regularly replace cheaper mats. My one tiny criticism is that it's pretty big and bulky, so don't expect to just toss it in a mat sling and easily take it somewhere. On the other hand, Manduka makes a lighter version of this mat, and I just don't think it would feel as good on the knees, so I like this one just as it is. I highly recommend this mat.
Must be broken in
And by that I mean with a stiff bristle brush, Dawn dish soap, and a lot of scrubbing. You may even have to do it several times. I think it took me three good scrubs and letting it dry in the sun each time. There was no way sea salt was going to do that for me. NOW it’s a great mat - but they really should be honest about how best to get rid of that film.
Helps You Get Into Even the Toughest Poses
Although I haven't been able to try this mat out at my regular weekly yoga class due to the "stay-at-home" order in California, this mat works very well in my makeshift "studio" in my den. It's my first real yoga mat (I'd been using an "exercise/yoga" mat for more years than I care to admit) but being at home for an extended period of time convinced me to take the plunge and make the purchase. I have not been disappointed. The Manduka Pro is everything an experienced yogi could ask for. It is a bit heavy but for simply taking it to and from class that should not be a problem.
do not recommend.
Shocked this mat is so highly reviewed. I thought for the brand and the cost it would be flawless but it’s quite the opposite. It is dangerous how slippery this mat is. I’ve used it for 3 different kinds of classes now and I can’t even hold downward dog on it. Forget taking it to a heated class where you expect to sweat. It literally turns into a slip’n’slide. Third use my studio let me borrow a towel and that made it work but for a $138 mat I don’t want to have to buy more products for it to be usable. Returning. (Instructor has another client that experienced the exact same outcome with this mat. There’s a theme here.)
