Excellent Yoga Mat
I had to leave this review in response to the negative reviews below. I have two of the Eko mats, the 5mm and the Lite. First of all, these mats are made of natural rubber. That has a smell. It will dissipate in time. Now you know. Most of the negative reviews for this mat (and Jade Harmony mats for that matter) are complaining about the smell. I actually don't mind the smell one bit, and it certainly isn't strong enough to smell the whole house up, but I guess it ruins enough people's days that they have to go online and dissuade others from purchasing a quality mat. Second, these mats are very grippy. They're excellent in a regular nonheated class, but in a hot yoga class you'll sweat and then the surface will get slippery. There is no mat on which that will not happen. That is why they make special yoga towels, yogitoes, or people just bring bath towels from home to class, etc. Anyways, the sale price REI is offering these mats at is pretty hard to beat and the quality is absolutely there.
Very heavy and distinct odor
I received this today. I should have realized how heavy it would be, but I was quite surprised by that. When I cut open the plastic packaging, it was obvious that the odor was going to be a problem in addition to the weight. It smelled strongly like tires, which does make sense as it is made of rubber, but it was overpowering. I returned it today to get the smell out of my house asap. I'm sure it is a comfortable mat, but those two qualities made it not worth it for me. At least I know those qualities matter to me now, so I can choose more carefully.
Finally Found "the one"
I searched high and low for the perfect mat. I tried the Jade Harmony mat which was way too grippy, then I tried the Manduka Pro Lite (bc I'd never pay $100+ for mat) and it was too slippery, and even tried some of the cheaper ones from TJMaxx. I decided to try the Manduka eKO mat before giving up altogether and I LOVE it! It has just the right amount of grip and cushion, and the color is so pretty and vibrant. The rubber smell isn't that bad either. I left it outside overnight to air out before using it, the smell is barely noticeable.
favorite mat, great non-slip
I love this mat. I did a lot of research for what would be the best regarding non-slip and almost all review sites agreed this is perhaps even better for sweaty, slippery hands than even the manduka pro. I have tried both and definitely found that to be true. As for the smell, it goes away it just needs aired out a little bit.
Not a non-slip mat
I was so excited to receive this mat. Manduka is supposed to be the best! While the material of the mat is of good quality (it's dense, so provides good padding), the pattern printed on top of this mat makes it very slippery. I would not recommend it to people who practice regularly, or really at all. Manduka makes better mats for a comparable price.
Great mat for home practice but a little stinky
So, the mat is a little stinky at first... but the mat is also super thick, grippy, and a great quality. I wound up taking the quiz on manduka’s site to narrow down my search for a yoga mat. It recommended this one, and I’m extremely satisfied with my purchase. The stink fades over time. I burn a little mini incense stink while I practice anyway so other than washing my hands afterwards it is a relatively small inconvenience for a great experience.
Sticky for me even when sweating
This mat is great for Power Yoga. I have found that it is not slippery when wet. Don't get me wrong, it isn't as grippy when dry, but after an hour long session of where I have sweated profusely, I'm still able to get in 3 or 4 wheels without fear that I'm going to fall on my head. Also, I found taking just a moment to mop up some of the sweat from the top of the mat really helps it perform at the level that I need during my practice. Other "non-slip" mats that I have tried from Gaim don't even compare. And the smell? C'mon, just let it air out .. we've had it three weeks and allowed it to constantly air out and the smell is almost gone. It is like a brand new basketball .. they have that weird rubber smell in the beginning, but that eventually goes away. I think I read somewhere that giving the mat a good cleaning with 50/50 water/cider vinegar mixture helps if you need the smell to go away faster.
Way less slippage!
This yoga mat is awesome in terms of minimizing hand and foot slippage when I start to get a bit sweaty. This mat also provides good cushioning for poses on your knees. Tip: If possible, air it out a bit before using. It is made with quality materials and no plastic, but the rubber smell does linger.
Works for Hot Yoga
Good grip )even with significant sweat), pairs well with a manduka yoga grip towel, fits perfectly in my bag, comfortable weight, I actually like the natural rubber smell and the color is full of personality!
Love this mat
Excellent product and at a good price. I use it three days a week for yoga and floor Pilates .
