Jury is out, but hopeful
There has been no snow to test it out on, but a few initial thoughts are: It is way to thin and flimsy to be expedition grade as advertised; however if it holds up and does it's designed function as a freight sled I would upgrade to a five star rating. There are two grommets on the front end which should hold up fine as anchor points to a pulling rope. I modified the sled with a cord around it's perimeter with intermittent prusik knots along a cord. Fins were attached to the bottom to minimize fishtailing while pulling and a very talented friend fashioned a fabricated aluminum hitching point on the front of the sled.
This sled makes a great Pulk (Pull Sled)
This sled makes a fantastic Pulk (Pull Sled) for multi day human powered winter trips over frozen lakes and deep snow. The plastic this sled is made out of is very durable and even at -40 doesn't get brittle like many other sleds. The width and length are about ideal for fitting in snowshoe tracks and taking enough gear for a cold tenting trip. Many options for customization.
winter camping helper
The Paris expedition sled performes very well and is a great way to carry less in your back. After adding cordage for lashing a duffel bag and a poles for pulling it, I was impressed with how well it tracked. One of my trips was with a friend who used a much more expensive polk and his was the one that tipped the most traversing slopes. Taking a sled is still work whether on skis or snowshoes, but you have to compare it to carrying all the weight on your back, which makes for top heavy skiing.
PLEASE READ REVIEWS CLOSELY...
DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY. NOT HEAVY DUTY. I SHOULD HAVE READ REVIEWS MORE CLOSELY. THIS PRODUCT IS WAY OVERPRICED. THIS SHOULD BE A $30- $40 SLED AT MOST. DONT EXPECT IT TO LAST IF YOU ARE MOVING HEAVY GEAR FOR LONG DISTANCES. IF YOU ARE ONLY EXPECTING TO USE IT FOR A FEW SEASONS FOR DOWNHILL SLEDDING ONLY OR TO MOVE LIGHT GEAR SHORT DISTANCES THEN OK. THE MATERIAL IT IS MADE FROM IS THICKER AND PROBABLY A LITTLE MORE DURABLE THAN YOUR BIG BOX STORE CHEAP SLED. IT IS LARGE- SO CAPACITY IS GOOD. REI IM SURE YOU CAN FIND A BETTER SLED FOR THE SAME COST OR LESS. THE DESCRIPTION IS DEFINITELY MISLEADING THIS IS NOT WHAT I WOULD CALL A PRO EXPEDITION SLED.
Tracked good, nice width
Not paris like thumb nail picture showed, and likely subpar construction, but ok at the discounted price.
Not the same
YouTube videos and older reviews are almost always positive. Newer reviews, not so much. The sled I received had sharp flanges on the bottom of the rope holes where the injected plastic had leaked out of the mold. If not trimmed, a rope could be worn through. Worse, not enough plastic was used to fill the mold leaving the bottom of one side rim rippled and demonstrably thinner. There was no confidence that it could withstand the stress of securing a load. Returned it. Noticed another identical sled in the 'used' section with a split down the middle.
Super awesome sled
This sled is awesome for sledding and also can carry up to 500lbs!!!!
Rugged, glides well, ... and Orange!
We've been ski touring and making trans-Sierra trips for 50 years, but last winter was the first time we used an expedition sled, one of this same model. It's molded of ~ 1/8in. thick material that looked as good after 20 mi. of hard ice and some exposed rock as it when we started, and glides well. We rigged rigid poles for pulling and a guide rope at the back for control when traversing, crossing snow bridges, etc. The sled just purchased appears to be of every bit the same quality. Consider adding keel strips of aluminum or fiberglass angle stock if you plan to traverse steeper slopes. It also might be helpful to rig a reverse brake of plastic chain. Consult the web for articles on rigging and technique.
Excellent, but pack carefully
Overall, great size, great material, lots of versatility. It’s not super heavy. Lots of points for attaching ropes and tethers, pulk poles, and so on. I used this in the BWCA last January and had an excellent time — after working out the kinks. We had warmer weather on the hike out (high 20s, low 30s; roughly 6 miles with two or three portages), which made the snow soft and sloppy. The weight distribution wasn’t quite right, close but not quite perfect. The sled tipped a lot until I over indexed weight in the back (which you should do anyway, I know), and after that, we were smooth sailing. Some of the portages were tricky, as they are, which made for more delicate maneuvering to avoid tipping and so on. But the narrower build is worth it when blazing trail. Overall, it’s great sled.
Portland snowpocalypse FEB2021: let’s go!
Our Pro Expedition Sled rocked our local sledding hill, out-performing others on the slope, fast, durable, and properly fitted with front grommets. It handled a large guy and his kid quite well. The bright orange color is easy to spot at night or anytime. It’s durable; happy we purchased this one vs. the smaller sled on REI’s catalogue. Not expensive. Great for hauling gear. Durable. Need to fit grommets with proper rings for attaching a leash, reins, etc. Fits in my Thule cargo box. This sled rocks.
