Great Recreational Tandem
I am by no means a kayak expert but I think this is an excellent tandem for its intended purpose - day trips on lakes & mild rivers So far this one has been on both and has handled them very well. Standout features: 1) very comfortable seats 2) light and easy to lift 3) tracks very well, even when single. 4) true 500 lb capacity (tested with two adults and two large dogs). 5) stable, two chines. This is not a speed demon but still moves easily. On String Lake in Grand Teton NP the wind got pretty strong, 25-30 mph. No problems paddling into or broadside to this stiff breeze. On the Snake River we were able to easily manuever around rocks. Light rapids are no problem. This is not really a white water kayak. I would not try anything over Class 2 but you might if you are skilled. Used within reason, this kayak is a lot of fun. It is still a recreational boat. Storage is ok, but it's not really set up for a major expedition. I could see a single paddler putting gear up front for a multi-day run, but not sure there's enough storage for two. Overall, I'm very pleased.
Arrived damaged in a garbage bag
Unfortunately, this order took about 3 weeks to be delivered and then was delivered in a garbage bag (with no protection). As you can imagine- the product arrived damaged and scratched all over. They are apparently replacing this product, but our kayak plans for the holiday weekend are now ruined without a functioning kayak. Super disappointed. I hope to have a better review once the new one arrives (hopefully in a box and not a garbage bag). Time will tell!
Nice No-Frills Kayak
We are by no means kayak experts but have rented/borrowed both single and tandem kayaks several times over the years. Those were all of the "budget" variety. We decided on this Pelican Argo 136XP based on generally excellent reviews and specs that ticked a lot of boxes for us. Our maiden voyage was String Lake in Grand Teton National Park. The boat did not disappoint. It is light enough for my wife and I to easily lift onto our Toyota RAV4. We had to carry it a hundred yards or so from the parking lot to the shore. The handles are comfortable but it was a chore. Will probably get some wheels in the future. On the lake it was a dream. Very stable. Tracked very well, even with a stiff wind. Glides effortlessly through the water. At one point I paddled it by myself while wife swam. Even with the wind I could easily control the boat to stay next to her. Performance overall is excellent. Seats are very comfortable. Padding is really good. No discomfort after several hours on the water. They sit in molded bases that keep you above of any water that inevitably gets in the floor. The backrests do not move up/down, only front/back via right/left straps. The foot pegs are a little fiddly since you have to fold them towards you to release while simultaneously pushing them away to move them foward on the track. I am long-legged at 6'-3", 230 lbs and was quite comfortable once everything was adjusted (doing this on shore and not on the water would have been easier...duh). A higher backrest would be nice for me but not a deal-breaker. 5'-9" wife had no complaints. The rear dry well is large but is essentially a bag with a hard top. I didn't really test water tightness but the few things we threw in it stayed dry. I'd say there is enough overall storage/capacity for day trips. Maybe overnight if you pack really light and stuff things fore & aft and between your legs. This is not an expedition boat. Although it is pretty utilitarian, what it does - it does well. And comfortably! For the money ($850) it's a great value. Used as a touring/day tripper it exceeded my expectations. MUCH better than the cheap rotomolded offerings.
Great Tandem Kayak
This is my third season with this kayak. Love it! Fast, for design, easy to paddle, tracks straight, easy to maneuver, pretty stable. Good boat for smooth rivers and lakes .
Stable kayak
Stable kayak on protected water. Easy access and comfortable seating.
