such a let down
I have been hiking for 20 years and tried just about every brand out there. First night of a 60 mile hike I prepared this for dinner. Even after an additional 10 minutes to the 20 min cook time. The dehydrated chips never absorbed the boiling water. I ended up eating dried dehydrated chips and dog food water. Flavor tasted like my dogs food smells but that may just because it was still dehydrated. Don’t waste your money on this supposed high end backpacking food. I would rather eat a can potted meat than eat this again even if it was free. Do yourself a favor and avoid
Decent alternative
It's not a bad chili, just not quite what I was expecting. The spices completely overwhelmed all other flavors. I could have been eating beef. I could have been eating kangaroo. I could have been eating taro. The bison and the sweet potato were simply textures, which is a bit of a pity. But it did taste good, and was plenty filling and easy on my sensitive gut.
Great backpacking meal!
Honestly this meal (and all the other Heather’s choice meals I’ve had for that matter) is one of the best backpacking meals I’ve ever had. It genuinely tastes like homemade chili. I think you could serve this to someone and they would have no idea it was dehydrated at some point. This meal is also packed with protein, a rarity for backpacking meals in my experience. I did not have issues rehydrating, although I was diligent about waiting the 20 mins before eating and stirred it well a couple times. Also, the bag is 1/2 to 1/3 the size of regular freeze dry for the same calories and weight.
Was so excited....
Well, this was the worst tasting chili I have ever had. After trying dozens of different freeze dried meals from numerous manufacturers this was the worst. I gave 2 stars instead of ! simply because if properly seasoned this could have been a huge win. The consistency was fine, prep was fairly easy,( though the 20 minute soak time was long), the flavor was just dreadful.
Great tasting bison chili!
I thought the flavor was awesome and had zero issues with it re-hydrating that others have mentioned. I will definitely buy this again. My only knock, hence 4 stars, is that it is costly for a single serving meal. You get twice as many servings with Peak Refuel for the same price.
Best meal on our adventure
Recently backpacked the Grand Canyon area. We each brought a meal to serve the group. I decided to bring the Bison Chili meal and it was a huge hit! One per person and it gave the flavor and calories we needed. Best ever!
Worst freeze dried meal ever
As noted in a couple of reviews the meal never reconstituted. After 25 minutes of soaking in previously boiling water at sea level, I had to eat it as it was quickly getting cold. I'd go back to 1970s Mountain House chili mac before trying one of these again...
pretty good chili, a bit pricey
This is a pretty good chili, plenty of meat and good taste especially if you are into sweeter chilis. A bit on the pricey side for a single serving but still good.
Kind of flat
Not sure if I did something wrong (put 10oz boiling water in pouch for 20 minutes) but the potatoes didn't fully rehydrate, and the flavor profile was... flat. Maybe because I have no sense of smell, but it didn't taste as good as I was expecting. The bison was alright, plentiful even, if a little dehydrated still as well. Not my personal go-to, but others certainly seem to be enjoying it.
Tasty with a kick
This is the best backpacking food I've had. The bison was delicious (as backpacking food goes) and there was a nice kick to the flavor. It's a bit pricier than other brands, especially for one serving, but the flavor was worth it. This is not not something I would keep in my emergency kit (short shelf life, cost), but it is something I will buy again.
