Tastes great; sticks to the spoon
I had read before that people were complaining that the cheese would stick to their spoons, but I figured that the complaining was certainly unjustified, as I have eaten plenty of Mountain House meals before, and never had an issue. And then I at the Lasagna with Meat Sauce. It was damned delicious, but the moment I stuck my spoon in, it was as if the spoon were a magnet for the cheese. And the cheese would simply NOT come off the spoon. The food was great. The cheese disaster afterwards was awful.
Less Product/Higher Price
I still have a couple of packs of MtnHs. freeze dried meals from two years ago. They are 4.3 oz. These new ones are 3.6 oz. and cost more. Sup ?
New packaging, twice less calories, same price
Pretty disgusting marketing strategy from Mountain House. They changed the packaging. Huge decrease in portion size for the same price. Less calorie per portion. Recipe is bad compared to previous version, almost no cheese in this lasagna. Stay away from Mountain House.
New 2020 line less calories
The pre-2020 version of this same meal was 600 calories per package. Now it's 440 calories per package, but still the same price. 440 is hardly enough for dinner on a regular day, let alone when backpacking. Time to find a different brand I guess :/
Good food, smaller portion
A little disappointed that Mountain House made their portions smaller recently but this is still a good choice for backpacking food.
This lasagna is my absolute favorite MH ever!
I could live on this stuff it's so tasty. At least one pouch always comes with me on backpacking trips. I've even eaten it for dinner at home when is get the random craving. It reminds me exactly of the Chef Boyardee Lasagna I used to eat as a kid. Of course it didn't taste exactly like "lasagna," but it is really good regardless. The noodles are chunky and the meal satisfying. My only complaint is that a single pouch is really suited for only one person; two people splitting one pouch of this would still be hungry. I'm not a big gal (5'2" and 130 lbs) and I eat one to myself no problem. These are also spendy and I wish they were cheaper for the amount of food you get.
The best of all
My gf and I have a running list of all the backpackers food we eat from all companies. Maybe it was the fact that we hiked all day in the grand canyon, or the fact that we shared it with new friends we met on the hike, BUT THIS MEAL HIT DIFFERENT. It’s the best meal we’ve had EVER across all meals. Not to take away from the other delicious meals but if you don’t grab one of these when you see it, you’re missing out on an experience.
Mmmmmm..
Expensive, but tasty. Easy to prepare, no cleanup which is especially nice in sub freezing temps. Packaging is a little bulky. A little short on calories for a backpacking food. If I am burning 4000 calories a day a sub 500 calorie meal does not quite cut it.
Good flavor, but NOT lasagna; TINY portions
The packaging says this is two servings of 220 calories each. For comparison, one Luna bar is 200 calories, and a serving of boxed mac-n-cheese (prepared) is 280 (Annie's) - 330 (Kraft), and a whole box of mac-n-cheese 700 - 825. I, a small woman, easily ate the whole thing and supplemented it with several other items to make a reasonable dinner. On the positive side, the flavor is pretty good: the beef actually tastes like beef. The sauce is a pleasant Italian style sauce, albeit on the mild side (think Chef Boyardee level of seasoning). On the negative side, it didn't seem like lasagna to me. Real lasagna has a one or more layers of a ricotta and mozzarella cheese mixture. I know freeze dried food is never going to be good as regular food, but I didn't feel like this dish had any suggestion of that critical part of a lasagna, and I wouldn't even call the sauce cheesy. Instead, this dish should be labeled something like "Pasta and Beef in Tomato Sauce, with a bit of cheese in the sauce."
The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread
If you want the short and sweet it is like if stoufers did it right and it's not small. Thick noodles with a perfect al dente and perfect texture, ingredients are legit healthy it has some sodium but drink more water it's good for you! This Sicilian says bon appetite!!! 10/10
