exceeded expectations
Got this for my solo camping trip, didn't think I would need it but it was backup just in case weather went bad. Long story short, it did :( and i couldn't set up my tarp because the wind was blowing 30 mph and lightning, and I was flooded out in the mountains so I couldn't even cook in my car. Luckily I had this, and my IWATANI junior compact burner so I could boil water; and IT WAS SO GOOD!!!! I will ALWAYS have this on hand now! Though it is more of a soup with chili and macaroni and not super thick campfire chili, the flavor is great!
Somewhat acidic and bitter
With my first spoonful I was surprised at how acidic or sour it tasted. I thought it must be the spices. But I liked the spices, they were appropriate for chili. So the acidic taste that I didn't like must be from the tomato paste. I had to force myself to finish the meal and I felt like the whole PH of my body had changed to acid. I usually try to stay alkaline. So I like the Stroganoff and Fettuccine dishes with white sauce. With the chili I honestly was expecting something sort of sweet, but it was bitter instead. I didn't want to eat it. Next time I try it, I'll sprinkle a bit of brown sugar on it. I usually don't have a problem with chili and beans.
One of their best meal options ... Stock up :)
As someone that has had the comparable government meals, I would say this takes the cake. However, make sure you are letting it sit for a minute or two after you boil so the water soaks everything, the crunch isn't exactly appetizing. I would say this is not two servings unless you're a child or looking for a quick snack. This meal keeps well in the trunk of a car, the bottom of a bag or in your pantry. All you need is boiling water (and salt imo). Whoever you're camping, hiking or having a stay at home meal will love you for this one. :)
Our favorite!
Chili Mac w/ Beef is one of my family's favorite freeze dried meals from Mountain House. Great flavor, light, the pasta cooks all the way through. Quick camping meal if you want to spend more of your time enjoying the outdoors. We always keep a stash of this and even bring it on day trips just in case we get hungry.
Easy & Tasty
Title says it all. But definitely assume one package / person, instead of recommended serving size
Go to trail meal
Chili mac with beef is my favorite mountain house meal. The beans reheat consistently, the flavor is excellent, the consistency is great even if you add a little too much water. I usually bring some Fritos and powdered cheddar to add in for Frito chili cheese
Yummy
MH Brand is my favorite! The pasta ones are especially good (better than rice based ones imo). I like this one b/c there's no cheese. The sauce has a bit of a kick. Delicious, would definitely order again.
Mmmmmmm
Expensive, but tasty. Easy to prepare, no cleanup which is especially nice in sub freezing temps. Packaging is a little bulky. Not my favorite flavor but great for variety.
Go to Backpacking Meal
This is my fall back freeze dried meal. None of my attempts at a DIY backpacking meal have equaled the chili mac.
Hearty and tasty!
Everything rehydrated evenly, the sauce was tasty, and the ingredients were well balanced. Filling and hearty!
