my to-go-to backpacking meal
I pretty much bring this meal on any multi-day backpacking trip I go on. The flavor is a good balance of creamy and savory, and the rehydration instructions are spot on. I've tried other meals now but this is the one that I keep coming back to no matter what! That being said, my only complaint would be that the ratio of chicken to vegetables. The last trip I ate this in my sister wished there was less chicken and more carrots since the carrots are very good too. For anyone concerned about the reviews saying the chicken didn't rehydrate properly: my tip is to make sure you mix thoroughly when you pour your boiling water in and be sure to push as much chicken as possible towards the bottom to avoid dry, crunchy meat.
Great taste AND allergy friendly!
I am so excited to find the Peak meals, and especially the curry. My family has food allergies, and most dehydrated meals include wheat or nuts or milk. We purchased one of every brand and variety we could find that worked for our restrictions, and have been working our way through them. Some were too spicy, some just didn't have enough calories, and some were just...not tasty. The Peak meals hit all my requirements and they taste great! The chicken curry is good enough that I would eat it even if not on a backpacking trip. My son who can't eat nuts, eggs, milk, beef, shellfish, wheat or oats CAN eat this and likes it.
Poor and unsafe packaging and customer service
Poor and unsafe packaging as well as customer service. Check to see if the package is sealed correctly, which mine wasn’t, so it doesn’t spill its contents over your camping gear and inundate your stuff with a food odor. The first time it happened, over two years ago, I returned the product to REI where we discovered 5 other meals with the same problem where the only thing holding the dry uncooked meal was a sketchy ziplock that leaves the product exposed to tampering and spillage. I contacted the company and was told they were aware of the problem and were working on fixing it. They obviously didn’t as two years later the same thing happened and coated some of my camping gear with a food odor, a bad thing in bear country. Contacted the company and got no response. While the food tastes good, I am not willing to pay $13 or more for something they can’t seem to seal properly.
Wow! Amazing! Eager to try other Peak meals now
My son and I picked this up on a whim. I mostly go mountain house as it’s a known quantity (not bad taste, and doesn’t generally upset my stomach). However I am going to have to reevaluate my choices for my next trip. Great mild curry flavor, the rice rehydrated perfectly. The chicken rehydrated well, better than most meals I have tried, but still a little chewy. Hey that’s par for the course. I would emphatically recommend this and I am eager to see if the other products maintain the high bar set by this meal.
Best Dehydrated Meal
This is the best dehydrated meal that I have found. This is by far one of the tastiest dehydrated meals on the market. I've struggled finding dehydrated meals that don't destroy my stomach and GI tract while in the backcountry. Because this uses coconut milk instead of dairy, my body does better with this dehydrated meal than with any others that I have tried (and I have tried many across multiple brands). I highly recommend this meal. If you need to add additional calories to it, it pairs well with additional coconut oil.
awesome
This is the best, tastiest meal I've had, from any brand. I bought it a year ago and because I'm not adventurous when it comes to flavors, it stayed in the pantry. I had this when on a day trip with the family to the Monterey Aquarium, so not after a strenuous hike in (which has most stuff taste delicious). Backpacker Pantry Pad Thai used to be my go to "exotic" - it's too bad that it's in my pantry - it will stay there so long as I have this one available. The sauce is creamy, the flavor is divine, it's SO good. The flavor, texture, amount, everything is straight perfect. I am the type to eat hamburgers at chinese restaurants and steakhouses - not adventurous, and this is incredible!!
Top of favorite list. Super tasty! Lots of chicken
Our first trip w/ Peak meals—Now our favorite. This meal is TASTY! A lot of white chicken breast chunks—not dry at all! TIP: I cook for 5 min more than directions for any brand. Then shake the bag after putting the water in. I also reviewed the Butternut Dal Bhat—sooo delish too. We’re from a foodie town and used to good food.
Delicious and satisfying
I'm picky about curry, so I packed some Maesri's red curry paste in anticipation of this being bland or off in some way. Very pleased to say that it was delicious on its own! Flavors were good, and I really enjoyed the large pieces of carrot. While great without it, I did add about a tbsp of curry paste and some lime juice just because I could, and it really upped the flavor. Highly recommend if you have the space to pack some. I want to keep pouches of these in my house always now, these are that good! On par with some heat-at-home frozen meals I've had.
Better than Restaurant!
WHOA! mindblown on the yummy taste, richness and flavor of this calorie dense meal! The chicken and rice was very tender and the spices compliment this gem of a camp dish. Really tastes homemade or better than restaurant quality. "Mountain House... new phone...who dis" I'm exclusively dating Peak Refuel now.
Ok for dehydrated food
Ok for dehydrated food. Only enough for one serving not two.
