Go-to in a tight spot

I was approaching McCurdy Park, near 11,000 feet in Colorado's Lost Creek Wilderness when the rain that had been falling all day turned to sleet then pummeling hail in a lightning storm. I stood with my face against a tree, taking the punishment as the temperature fell. By the time the storm let up and turned back to rain, I was beat up, soaked and starting to become cold. In McCurdy Park, a couple of parties were already camped (one was picking up the pieces of their tent). I searched for a spot under boulder overhangs that might be dry, or at least give me a little shelter while I changed clothes -- and finally found the only such place in the park: a 3x6 foot area beside a shelf full of brambles. I stripped and changed, but while then dry, I could feel my core temperature still dropping. I pulled out my stove, got some water going and dug in my Ursack for my go-to: Mountain House Classic Spaghetti. Delicious, full of tomatoes, filling. And nearly as important, emotionally fulfilliing. Exactly what I needed in that situation.

On have been a mountain house fan for years and this has always been one of my favorite, go-to meals. Orders a couple for a trip I just went on and at first thought the packaging was the only thing new (which downsizing the packing in general was nice). I got out and got to camp then cracked one of these guys open and noticed it instantly looked different. The chunks of tomato were sub par and gross, the sauce seemed off from the old recipe, and there as some else stated, definitely less meat. Again I love Mountain House and will continue to buy their products, but not this one and I am really sad the one of my favorite all time backpacking meals has changed and I will no longer get to enjoy it!

Used to be delicious (for freeze-dried)!

Sadly, along with the new packaging is a new recipe. This version (grey/orange/blue packaging) is so unbelievably sweet, and there is significantly less meat. This used to be our go-to, and we would always buy it in bulk, but now, we are sorely disappointed in the changes.

Classic Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

I like to keep a Mountain House meal at work just in case I can't get away so had the opportunity to try the Spaghetti the other day. Texture - perfect, Ease - perfect, Convince - perfect, Flavor - 9/10. The flavor was good but it was a little on the sweet side for my personal taste. It makes sense if you are trying to get kids to eat it (think spaghetti-o's) but for grown-ups not so much. Don't get me wrong the flavor is good and I will eat more of it but if you are looking for savory this might not be it for you. For clarification it is NOT as sweet as spaghetti-o's or any other jar/can sauce but it is not beefy for sure.

Loved it!

I finally got around to ordering this Spaghetti and Meat Sauce meal to try out before ordering more for an actual backpacking trip. Personally, I loved it and found it to be a very satisfying meal. Not all spaghetti sauce recipes are the same but this particular flavor tasted exactly the way I like spaghetti sauce to taste, similar to Ragu, which I like. The sauce contained pieces of tomato and ground beef. Although it contained enough ground beef to satisfy me, I might consider buying a can of dehydrated ground beef to add some to the cooking pouch. A winner!

Try adding parm cheese packs for extra flavor

not very high on calories or protein but one of my favorites. I scotch tape two packs of parmesan cheese ( from a pizza takeout) to the package and add it after completing the wait time for cooking. Makes a difference.

Good hearty meal but a bit over priced.

I love this meal and always have. I’m a little annoyed that they moved from smooth sauce to chunky but it doesn’t affect the flavor much. The only thing keeping me from giving this five stars (this is true of most freeze dried meals) is the price. Ten bucks is way more than the cost of whats in the bag. Honestly not a knock to REI. If the staff read this, feel free to just relay this to mountain house.

Kid approved! The hands-down favorite.

Out of the 5 different varieties of Mountain House meals we enjoyed on our backpacking trip, our two boys (ages 7 and 9) thought this one was the best. We thought it was really good too! Recommended.

Great tasty kid-friendly option

Delicious kid-friendly meal that everyone will love. Preparing to lead a Girl Scout troop on their first backpacking trip we tried this meal at a meeting to make sure we'd have a meal everyone would eat. The girls LOVED it and told all their parents they want this for dinner at home. Took it on our trial trip and every single girl ate it and a few asked for seconds. Smells and tastes great. If you split it into two servings, half the kids were happy with that amount and half wanted the full serving. I'd say most adults would want both servings, especially if you've been hiking.

Worst mountain house

This is so sweet! And not much meat at all. Definitely the worst mountain house meal I've had.
