I will eat this anywhere.
This is probably my favorite Good To Go meal. I've reviewed a few of these and they all get five stars for health, serving size, bag quality and weight. They do like boiling water and have a relatively long rehydration time, but I find they're worth the wait. For those who feel the seasoning doesn't mix, I always stir when I first pour and then squeeze the bag a few times while it hydrates to mix it up. The Herbed Mushroom Risotto is amazingly tasty. The mushrooms are unbelievably meaty and seasoning is on point. If you wanted to add protein, would be great with salmon or chicken, whether dehydrated or canned. I would happily eat this any meal, not just in the back country. In addition to adventures, I travel for work often and plan to take this with me when I know dinner will be a challenge. It's truly that good.
My favorite meal on the trail!
This meal was DELICIOUS. We had several other freeze dried meals on this trip, and they were good, but this one was my favorite. Shared it with my friend and it was a true 2 servings, it's very filling. Make sure you follow directions...it's worth the wait.
Dinner soup
We branched out with this food option while camping along the Blue Ridge Parkway this May. We followed instructions as written on package and even allowed it to setup about five minutes longer than instructed. The rice didn't fully hydrate, the flavor was ok. The mushrooms themselves were good. See photos below.
Not for cold climates
I made a mistake recently by buying this product untested and heading off to the Sierras during winter. The problem is that once you've added boiling water you need to leave for 20 minutes. In low temps, like 20f, this is going to be close to frozen after that long. I decided to keep mine beneath my down jacket - needless to say during 20 minutes I ended up with it all over me. Worse, after 20 mins it was crunchy gelatinous goo. Right now I recommend Alpine Faire.
not worth the extra 33% cost
So the guy at REI said that this was the special dinner to eat on a special night when on a long hike. It was 33% more expensive than everyone else's gourmet dinners, and I am all about spending the money when you get the very best. Unfortunately this was just normal good food. I would even go a far as saying that the mushrooms had the texture of leather! The Risotto was very well done, but the leather textured mushrooms turned me off. (normally I love all types of mushrooms) The flavor of the mushroom was good, the risotto even better, but definitely not worth the extra $ two fifty bucks.
Desperately needs more seasoning
Low sodium, indeed! Seemed like it could be really good with even a little salt, but I didn't have any. The last thing I want to think about when backpacking is having to bring extra seasonings for ready-to-eat meals. That said, I prepared according to the instructions, and it came out fine, and I ate the whole package. I'd recommend it if you are on a low-sodium diet, or don't mind packing some salt along.
A bit disappointed
I bought several of these meals for a short backpacking trip. They sounded really good and contained less salt than most. I was a bit concerned that these dehydrated, rather than freeze dried meals would not re-hydrate well using a Jet Boil. Indeed, they turned out kind of hard. The second night, I tried the marinara, which turned out better. The third night, I made sure the water was really boiling and let the Herbed Risoto sit longer. Still, it didn't re-hydrate that well. A friend took Backpackers Pantry vegan meals. We tried each others meals and I did like the Backpackers better. Perhaps the Good to-Go meals would be better if cooked longer. I might still recommend the marinara. But, I am going to look for other vegan options for the next trip.
Just Okay
I was hoping it would be better than it was. I bought one of each of the flavors from Good to Go and this is the first one I've tried. The flavoring is good but weak. I could taste a bit of the garlic but couldn't really pick up on the basil flavor. The texture of the rice and the mushroom is very good. I ended adding salt to it and then it tasted much better. It isn't as crazy on the fat like some other backpacking meals I've had, and it has 13 grams of protein per serving. I probably won't purchase it again unless I get sick of every other meal I have and try to add in some variety.
Very tasty, perfect portion!
Had this last week on an overnighter on the Quehanna trail in PA. This is savory and filling, needs about 1/2 tsp of salt, also I recommend using use slightly less than 8 oz of water. The directions instruct you to use slightly MORE than 8 oz. but the result was fairly soupy, even after the 20 minute soak time. I'll purchase this again!
For my 'shroom fans
This was the one store-bought meal of which I kept the packaging, so I'd remember to buy more! I love mushrooms and was pleasantly surprised how many were in there, and the risotto texture was nice and creamy to boot. I can only assume the reviewers calling it bland are people who wouldn't enjoy this type of dish in general, but if you are a fan of hearty, mushroom-forward dishes this is definitely for you.
