Very tasty and Requires Little Water
These was surprising tasty. I actually shared a test cook pre-trail and shared with my wife who was shocked at how good it was. Plus it uses very little water (about 2/3 of a cup if I remember correctly). Side note, I do think Freeze Dried companies should stop listing single meals as serving 2. In what world would this serve to on the trail? Sure if you are sitting around your home, 500 calories is a reasonable meal, but not after a day of hiking. If meal, that requires a cook, is not hitting around 1K mark it's not going in my pack. So this is really a 1 serving meal.
Disappointed
I have purchased this meal before and liked it. However, the package I bought for a wilderness trip this year did not have any pasta in it, only chicken. So it was like eating chicken soup. There appears to be a quality control issue at this company. Two of the other people on this wilderness trip also had this meal, and theirs were perfectly fine, and good.
Tasty but took a lot to get the texture right.
The water amount was too low so I added more boiled water. The pasta was still very tough so I poured it out on a pan over the fire to heat up more. After the extra work the meal was very tasty.
Fantastic
Chicken Pesto is fantastic! Almost has an Al dent consistency, added a couple fresh tomatoes and hot sauce for tons of flavor!
Best out there!
This brand has proven superior in quality with our family. Rehydrates very well, great flavor and our kids loved it!
TASTY!!
These are the best dehydrated meals I’ve eaten in 30 years of backpacking. Will definitely buy more. Yes, pricey but delish!
Not Always Awesome
I in general love Peak Refuel dehydrated meals. I am disappointed to say when I opened my last package of the Chicken pesto it was not dehydrated but gooey and oily (I opened it days after purchase at the REI). I then emailed Peak to ask them about it (is it okay to eat?) and no response whatsoever. Success must have it's cost and customer service apparently is one of those.
Needs Improvement
I love other peak fuel meals, but this one didn’t turn out great in my opinion. I may have added a tad too much water (I’d rather have fully hydrated chicken than dry, chewy bits), but the pesto did not mix well at all (even with fully boiling hot water - gave it plenty of time to sit). the pesto became really clumpy and sticky to the bottom of the packaging and around my spoon, it was really weird to eat and honestly minimal flavoring. Also who brings a measuring cup with them on a backpacking trip? How hard is it to add a dotted water fill line on the back panel of the meal to make sure you get the water just right. Anyways, I’d say this meal was mediocre and to go with a different meal from peak fuel.
Excellent
I have a friend who keeps a spreadsheet of meals with the best calories-to-weight ratio and Peak Refuel holds many of the better positions on that list so I was eager to try them. This one comes out favorably on that list, at over 150 calories per ounce, and it's also one of the best tasting meals I've had in the woods. It disappeared shockingly quickly and I enjoyed all of it. I had this on day one, which turned out to be bad because it ended up being the best meal of my trip. Honestly I'd have this twice on the same trip in the future.
Would eat this again in a heartbeat.
First time I ate this and it was delicious. Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did and ate it all in one sitting. The sauce is really good, the meat is real and enjoyable, and I liked the petite ziti.
