Beware: Plastic Film inside!
Taste was good but a piece of plastic film that is a size of a thumb! was NOT I was expecting. It’s creamy sauce and this plastic was a clear thin one, not black color from bag itself, so you can’t really tell by look, but once you put in the mouth…you still could even think… it could be maybe onion skin ?Then you realize there’s plastic film in your mouth!! Be careful!
Crunchy cubes
I've tried about four Peak Refule meals and this is my least favorite. I was snow camping so I brought my water up to a full boil, then dumped it into the bag, which was in a cozy. I waited 15 minutes instead of the required 10 just to be sure. Smelled great, tasted good, but the beef cubes were crunchy. I mixed it up, still piping hot, then sealed it for another 5 minutes. The beef cubes were still crunchy. Disappointed. I will not be reordering this meal.
Variable results...
I have had this meal three times. The first time it was great. I liked it enough to buy 5 more for future trips. The second time, I had it on the second day of a three day cabin to cabin ski trip. After skiing/hiking/bushwhacking 8 miles, I thought I was hungry enough to eat anything. I was wrong. The meal rehydrated poorly and tasted really strange (almost burnt). It was so bad, I didn't even want to feed it to my dog. Water quality wasn't an issue because I was melting freshly fallen snow. I think I just got a dud meal. Two days later, curiosity got the better of me and I tried one at home. It was fine. Not as good as the first time, but I hadn't just hiked 15 miles. For the most part PR meals are great, but this one seems to be a gamble.
Directions wrong
I've eaten many freeze-dried meals over my life, and I have recently been switching from Mountain House to Peak, as a lot of the Mountain House meals can taste pretty bland. Having just eaten both the Mountain House and this Peak meal back-to-back in the beef stroganoff flavor, I have to say the Mountain House version tastes much better. Also, whatever you do, don't follow the 6oz water directions. I tried that at first and as another reviewer said, it makes a (mostly dry) paste. It wasn't even enough water to get rid of huge clumps of powder, even after vigorous stirring. Minimum 8oz, but preferably 10oz of water is needed. It also didn't rehydrate nearly as well even with the additional water. This flavor was a let-down after my previous Peak meals.
Wow just wow
I’ve had a few meals in my day and just wow this blew them all out of the water
Not my favorite, but worth a try!
This would not be my first choice for a freeze dried stroganoff. The freeze dried beef chunks honestly have the texture of wet cardboard. Not that I expected gourmet, so that aside, the flavor was pretty good up until I had just a few bites left. Then all of the sudden the flavor and saltiness really overwhelmed me and I couldn't finish. I prefer mountain house stroganoff flavor and texture, but I might give this another try, making sure to add a little more water then it calls for next time. Especially because it is so calorie and protein dense, which is a plus over mountain house's beef stroganoff.
Delicious
My husband I recently found this brand and LOVE IT! It tastes way better than mountain house and the ingredients are much higher quality. It costs a bit more than other brands but the taste and quality is totally worth the price. Now we only buy Peak meals, try it out and you won’t be disappointed. Also we did not find this to be over salty and beef stroganoff is my husbands favorite.
Great flavor and filling
I have a friend who keeps a spreadsheet of meals with the best calories-to-weight ratio and Peak Refuel holds many of the better positions on that list so I was eager to try them. This one isn't quite as good as the pesto pasta but I really enjoyed it. It was filling and tasty. The bag says to add a shockingly small amount of water - 2/3 cup if I recall correctly - and that's definitely not enough for this one. I gave it five minutes longer than the bag says and the meat still wasn't full rehydrated, and the sauce was extremely thick. Next time I'd probably add a cup - still not a lot of water, but I think it would be enough to fully rehydrate the meat and let the sauce be a little more saucy. Even following the bag directions though I still really enjoyed this.
Not As Good As It Could Be
I had the following take-a-ways after eating this meal. First, I believe the meal could benefit from a little less salt. If your pallet is sensitive to salt, or you're on a low salt diet, this item may not be for you. I found the salt level is high enough where, instead of enhancing the flavor, it competes with it. Additionally, and although this tends to be a universal issue with freeze-dried meals, I found 3/4 cup of water is not enough for the recipe and leaves this meal somewhat dry - so much so that there were still chewy noodles and beef chunks despite thoroughly stirring the contents, placing the container in a warming koozie, and waiting 10 minutes as directed in the instructions.
Rich
It’s high quality stroganoff for sure, got a couple spoonfuls of almost too much flavor, but still a solid yes in my book. Side by side with the mountain house, this one is more sour and salty, has spiral pasta and chunks of actual meat that don’t rehydrate as easily. The mountain house is more of a smooth, creamy, delicious comfort food that rehydrates well and has the perfect flavor.
