Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm*purrs Mmm! I was so looking forward to this backpack meal because it sounded so good. I planned to eat it in tortilla wraps that I brought along. Unfortunately I sufferred a brief and comical delusion of reality where 1 cup = 500ml (it's 250ml). Friend: Are you sure you put the right amount in? Me: YES. One cup- 400ml, plus another 100ml- Ah SHOOT. BUT- it still looked good! Smelled good... so I took a spoonful and hey! Good soup!! Makes me think the 'Velvet Bean Soup' by this brand is also likely good. I was still remiss for not having it in tortillas- but it was gooooooood nonetheless! As soup- good for one. Might have been okay for two if in wraps. But generally, one person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite MJF meal so far Pros: delicious, great company Cons: nothing I consider a true con I've tried Black Beans and Rice, Curry in a Hurry, and Lentils/Rice from MJF. This one is my favorite. The packaging recommends 8oz of water but 9-10 seems to work best. I ate this on it's own but I plan to order more and use tortilla chips or a tortilla to make a burrito. It does come out a little pasty as others have mentioned but that doesn't impact flavor. It contains cheese but I hardly tasted it. I would recommend bringing a little bit of actual cheese if you want the gooey/cheesy texture.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gaseous bloating is not a hikers friend Tried the other Mary Jane Farm organic foods with some success, but this product was truly awful. If you ate paste in the first grade then you have a basic understanding of the consistency, and flavor of the beans and rice dish. While as easy to prepare and lightweight as other products in the line, I can't recommend this for its lack of flavor, and for the fact that both myself and my hiking partner had uncomfortable stomach reactions after eating it. It'll stick to your ribs, and whatever else it happens to touch on its way through your system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 24 grams of fiber, Without being able to carry the weight of fruits and veggies I still want plenty of fiber in my diet. This has 24 grams! I will use it as a side dish to share. It tastes ok. Not bad but just like beans and rice. Lol.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Meal I got this for a backpacking trip I am getting ready to take, and thought I would try it for lunch today to see if it's a meal I would take with me. I was very happy with the taste and amount of food in the package. It recommends taking tortillas along for burritos, and I would recommend that too. But, if you have to eat it straight out of the bag that would be a good option too! It would be nice if there was a vegan option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Undeserving of bad rap I just got back from a trip to the Olympic Coast. While I was there I tried out the black beans and rice. Without a doubt it was delicious. The consistency is a little pasty but that doesn't really influence the flavor. It was quick to prepare and even though I couldn't quite get my water to boil (the last time I hike without a camp stove) it still cooked through. I'll buy it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from much better than most of the freeze dried options I have eaten every one of the Mary Jane's products that are vegetarian and all of them are at least good and some are excellent (and by excellent I mean tasty even when you are not "Trail hungry" ). With the beans and rice I say add some hot sauce and you have a tasty meal without the near lethal salt levels found in many similar products (check the labels and you will be astounded at the sodium content of competitors). The mary janes products tend to be closer to real food than most backpacking food with far fewer mysterious industrial ingredients. If you want light weight long storage food that is reasonably healthy this is a good bet but I would encourage any first time purchasers of freeze dried meals in a bag to sample a bunch before you hit the trail or oceans. If you like a bit more flavorcheck out the Mary Janes Chilimac but if you want a simple dish the beans and rice are good and they make an excellent side dish as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good stuff A tasty and hearty vegetarian meal. A good Southwestern beans and rice dish that's well seasoned with just a little heat. Some added Tabasco sauce is needed for those who like it hotter. It also has a good mix of protein, fat, complex carbs and minerals.
