Good flavor, but not pad thai
I tried the vegan Pad Thai flavor. Overall, it tastes pretty good. I didn't get the chance to try it in the back country, but kept going back because it is very well-seasoned and satisfying. We all know food always tastes better at the end of a hike so it exceeded expectations in that regard. There is a little spicy heat, so if you don't like spicy food, it might not be for you but I thought it was nice. There is a very prominent tomato flavor that is not present in Pad Thai, so I wouldn't say it tasted anything like Pad Thai, the only similarity would be the rice noodles and peanut flavor. The real peanut butter in the pack was a nice surprise. I don't think peanut powder would have been as good. Macros are pretty good for a backpacking meal, but a little low on protein in my opinion. I would definitely try the same meal with meat to up the protein. Needed a little extra salt too. Overall, I would definitely buy this again.
Lime Flavored Pad Thai That's Not Too Salty
Full-disclosure, Pad Thai is one of my favorite dishes and I've had many types of pad thai, from restaurants with varying authentic ingredients to nearly every instant/freeze-dried/made from scratch at home option available. That being said, for a freeze-dried meal, this vegetable pad thai is fairly good as a tasty, lower than average sodium, healthier, option. The sriracha lime sauce is not spicy but is noticeable flavor-wise and it's really the lime that dominants the flavor, almost too lime-y if I'm being honest. I made this pad thai recently after a post-MTB ride that lasted several hours and it was plenty energy/calories for that purpose. If I were doing an all-day epic ride or multiple days bikepacking or even backpacking, this wouldn't quite hit my caloric threshold for a meal other than lunch, but for day trips or a meal on the lighter side it's perfectly fine. Pros: Convenient, easy to make in several minutes; low sodium compared to the average freeze-dried options was a bit plus; healthier ingredients - it's not packed with preservatives and artificial flavoring; I also appreciated that the peanuts and peanut butter (see photo) were kept separate with the option to include them or not depending on personal preference. Cons: Following the recommended amount of boiling water to add (1-3/4 cups), the pad thai did have a somewhat soupy consistency, so 1.5 cups might work better if you prefer your pad thai be a little drier texture wise. Also, the lime flavoring could be a bit much if you're not a fan of lime; if you're looking for a spicier meal, this is not it. Other: The instructions on the back of the packaging state to remove and discard the oxygen absorber but the meal that I recieved did not have an oxygen absorber (I dumped the entire meal into a bowl to double-check before adding boiling water). Not sure if that was a packing error or if the instructions need to be updated. Overall, I would buy this meal in the future as a convenient, healthier meal option. I would give it 5 stars if the flavor wasn't so skewed only toward the lime-side and it had a little more spice or the option to add additional spice/flavoring.
Grub
What you have here is a veggie version of Pad Thai. Peanut butter substitutes for the traditional fish sauce, and soy substitutes for both the egg and tofu ingredients. Inside the pouch is a packet of peanut butter, packet of peanuts, and an Oxygen Absorber Packet.(See picture) If you really love Pad Thai, you can get a little creative with the ingredients; leave the peanut butter out and use fish sauce, or what I like to do, add beef nuggets in to make Beef Pad Thai.(see picture) Whatever you choose to do, keep in mind, you're eating for two.
Tasty, easy, & filling!
We took the Backpackers Pantry Pad Thai with us on a recent hike in the New Hampshire White Mountains and it was the perfect trail meal. While we generally don’t eat dehydrated food on day hikes, it was a chilly day and a long hike, so having something hot was a nice way to stay warm and satiated without a lot of added weight. To prepare the food, we used our Sea to Summit cook set and MSR Pocket Rocket, which cooks in no time. We look forward to trying several more varieties of Backpackers Pantry on our future hikes and overnight adventures.
It'll get the job done...
I had this leftover from a recent outing, so I ate it at home. It didn't take long for me (15 min), though I boiled the water on a stove at home. I will agree that the flavor was pretty bad out of of the gate, but I added some chili paste and it wasn't too bad. It would have been excellent had I just hiked several miles and were freezing cold. If you can get add some of those Sriracha packets to your kit, you'll be sittin' pretty. The peanut butter adds a good amount of fat, which should help warm you up on those nights when your tent is a might bit cold. The main + ... it felt like a lot of food. I was pretty hungry tonight and less than half filled me up. Something I did to keep it from being too soupy... put the bare minimum of water in the pouch and squeeze all of the air out before sealing it to get it to cover the noodles and it won't be so soupy.
Yummy
I really like this meal. Don't expect it to taste like the real deal Pad Thai and you'll love it. Just think of it as a different noodle dish- ha! It was filling and tangy, and had really good flavor to it. When your camping and hungry and don't want to fool around with cooking, this will suit you perfectly. I followed the advice of another and did not add the full amount of water so it wouldn't be soupy. It came out perfect. Oh and it's vegan too! :)
Tasty! Easy!
This is a tasty trail meal. The peanut butter mixed in REALLY sets the flavor! The package seals up very easily, and 15 minutes “cook” time. I’d love to have this one in my pack! Had my son try it and he’s not a fan of spicy food, so be aware it has sriracha sauce included. I’d have loved more sriracha, but that’s just me
Not great
I was excited to try the vegan Pad Thai… in the interests of positivity, I will say that I am happy that I didn’t have to eat the whole thing. I rarely throw out food. Unfortunately, this hit the trash after just a few bites. It managed to be both watery and waterlogged. The noodles were mushy and bland. There was almost no salt. The peanuts were unseasoned. I will not buy this for any reasons. I wouldn’t even keep in my pantry for emergency use.
Same price but much fewer nutrients/cals
I'm so upset. I bought this 2 years ago for the exact same price, but a full package was 930 calories and 40 g of protein. This new version is such a rip off for the price. This used to be my go to backpacking meal, but not anymore.
Tangy, untraditional Pad Thai
Loved the crunch of the peanuts and even the peanut butter (but both?!) but the tomatoes, bell peppers, and vinegar made it weird and tangy. Did not taste like pad thai. I didn't care for it. However, very filling.
