Yummy and quick wholesome meal for anytime.
Since I did not have a camping trip planned for the immediate future, I ate the Wild Zora "Baja Citrus Lentil" quick quinoa meal at home for supper. I am a picky vegetarian eater, so I liked that all ingredients were listed on the package (all of them wholesome) and that the package listed calories, protein etc. for the meal both with and without olive oil. I was suprised to discover when I opened the package that there was a packet of olive oil included. I followed the directions and boiled the water to add to the pouch. The pouch stood upright with the hot water added to it. After the 10 minute wait, I noted how colorful and appetizing the prepared food looked. I really liked this dish, and I would definately buy it for camping, kayaking or bikepacking trips.
Yum, Yum eat it up.
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I only gave it 4 stars because ice cream = 5 stars. It was quick and easy to fix and makes for a delicious meal on the trail. When I took my first bite I was a little disappointed that it was so bland. But I learned an important lesson I want to pass on to all of you buyers: Mix it well! The instructions say to shake it up to mix in the spices, I guess I was to gentle in my shaking. After mixing the whole thing up, from bottom to top, the flavor came through and it was a very enjoyable meal. The package is light and will pack well. The bottom spreads to form a nice base to stand up when you add the water and let it soak. I used the enclosed olive oil packet, so I can't comment on how it tastes without it. I would buy this to include in future backpacking trips.
Really did hit the spot!
I recently took this product on a three-day backpacking excursion in the Sierra Mountains, where the elevation consistently exceeded 10,000 feet. As evening approached and I began setting up camp, I couldn't help but look forward to enjoying my Quinoa Bowl. I was in need of a warm, hearty meal, and this product exceeded all expectations. From the moment I opened the package, the inviting aroma of herbs and spices wafted through the air, signaling that I was in for a culinary delight. I tasted the meal both with and without olive oil; both options were excellent, but the olive oil added great fats that my body needed. Upon tasting, I was not disappointed; the texture was impeccable, giving the impression that the meal had been freshly prepared. Enhanced by a subtle hint of citrus and a medley of herbs, the Quinoa Bowl proved to be both satisfying and nourishing. This meal truly elevated my outdoor dining experience.
Nice, tasty camping meal!
Made this for lunch on a cold day, because I wanted something warm. I really liked the touch of the olive oil packet, it gave a really nice flavor profile that dehydrated foods usually lack. I think the fill line was maybe a tad too much water, it was still soupy once I made it. It didn't detract from the taste, but I would have preferred a more dense consistency, so next time I will make it with less water! Nice flavors, I added a bit of hot sauce as I like spicy. This worked for one, I wouldn't have had leftovers to share with my toddler had she been interested! I also really liked that the package was small, it would've been great backpacking due to that!
Good, but not my first choice.
I wouldn't say it was this flavor specifically, but something about the meal was just not my favorite. There was a lot of spice, great flavor in general and the lentils and quinoa cooked well in the bag. I'm not sure how you can combat it, but the fat that you add water to these bags and the measuring point is outside of the bag and not verifiable as you poor water in is a serious design flaw I wish someone would solve. I filled the water and then closed the bag. This might have caused some settling as the water was absorbed and made the spice pool in places. I also don't love green onion which might have also been a factor. I would try other bags and maybe even this again moving the spices around.
Quite Delicious
Super easy to prepare in just minutes. Great full flavor really hit the spot. At first sight the package amount seemed small, but I found it to be very filling. I definitely recommend and can't wait to try other flavors and varieties.
Check the Oil Before Using!
I was REALLY excited when I found this product, it looked so good! I followed the directions and shook it up really good before adding water, stirred really good after adding water and before eating it. Consistency was good, no hard or undercooked components, but it tasted gross. Once in a while I tasted a hint of lime, but otherwise very bland with no other spice. But the biggest thing issue was that the oil tasted rancid (I used the enclosed oil packet). If I hadn’t used the oil, I could have probably eaten the contents and added my own additional spices, but I couldn’t get past the rancid oil. The whole packet went in the trash. Such a disappointment.
This brings the citrus (in a good way)!
This add-boiling-water meal was excellent! At ~120 cal/oz, it's solidly calorie-dense and has a tasteful amount of salt (good for replenishing sweat). Nutritionally, this is a great choice as it hits everything you would want. Taste-wise, the citrus is bright and the cumin flavor is strong - that's a popular combo and this does it well. This meal is colorful, which is nicer than good ol beans and rice (especially if you've got light to see it). The resealable package was convenient for holding in heat and it's nice that it can stand on its own. I'd give 5-stars if the package just came in a larger quantity - at 360 calories, you might want two after a long day of walking. Still, that's a minor note and can readily be solved by just bringing two!
Meh
Strange flavor, but decent. Feels like a healthy meal. Not my favorite, but I do still eat it occasionally. Better if you add toppings. I usually add a chopped bell pepper, cilantro, green onions, and crunched up tortilla chips.
Vegan but not up to par
Didn’t cook properly even with double the normal time, kept checking it and it was still crunchy. I couldn’t finish eating it it was so poor. Love the idea but execution is not there.
