LOVE this mat!

I've used this mat for several years now when camping with my wife and small kids. We use it when backyard camping, at a campground, and on the beach. We mostly use it at the doorway of our tent. It prevents dirt and gravel residue from getting in the tent. We take our shoes off at the door before entering and it's more comfortable to stand on barefoot than a thin towel or blanket. We've used it as a beach mat and it is the best at keeping everything sand-free. When we leave the beach I just give the mat one whip and it's ready to fold up. After it rains at the campsite, it's so nice to have this dry place to leave wet shoes or rinse off muddy items. It's one less thing to have to wash after returning from a camping trip or the beach. It's lightweight and packs lightly too.

Not Good For Wet Sand

My purpose for buying this mat was to use as a beach mat for my family of four. We live in Houston, Tx and drive an hour away to Galveston Beach regularly throughout the summer. I had this mat in my shopping cart for two years and finally decided to purchase during this years Anniversary Sale. A week later my family and I took this for a day trip to Galveston. The sand there is wet and compact. During our visit we found that as sand got on the mat, even with careful brushing off, the sand just smushed into the layers of the mat. Also, when we were leaving, I noticed four wet sand spots where the chair legs of our beach chair (REI Camp Stowaway Low Chair) were resting on the mat. The wet sand came UP through the mat. It was also a nightmare trying to shake loose sand from it on the beach and doing our best to not have the sand blow in surrounding people's faces. Eventually my husband and I gave up shaking it out, balled it up and took it home. Even after letting the sand dry out at home, we still were not able to get all the sand out of the mat. So we packaged it back up and, thanks to REI's amazing customer service, were able to return this mat for a full refund. It does appear to be a well constructed item and useful for other environments (based on other people's reviews) so I am giving it three stars.

Great for Camping and the Beach

I've used my sand-free mat for 1-1/2 years and love it. I set it up as the base of my camping tent front "Porch," and it makes a nice transition area between the outdoors and my tent. We leave our shoes on our "Porch," and it keeps our tent clean! We have also used it at the beach with our shade structure, and it lived up to its name. I'm so pleased with this mat I'm purchasing another (I have the 6' x 6' mat, and I'm getting the 10' x 10' mat), so that we can create an additional "Sand-free" area at camp or have more space to spread out at the beach.

Kept our tent clean

We bought this with with intention of using it in front of our tent for our 3 children to play on and for use as a door mat. We camped in dirt, not sand. yes the dirt fell through and the larger pieces of sticks/twigs and other small rocks needed to be swept off. My only complaint is that some debris is still stuck between the layers...meaning the debris fell through the top layer but never passed through the bottom layer. I've hung it up, hosed it down and just assumed it'll work its way out at some-point in time. The D Ring loops are great for staking down the mat.

Great addition to your car camp or picnic

The Multimat worked great to keep the sand and dirt out of the camper. It also has a nice feel on your barefeet, spills go through the mesh, and in the hot sun it does not heat up. It was especially nice as camping with a dog usually means extra dirt in the camper, having the dirt captured by the mat before it made it into the camper was an added bonus. The rings on the corners makes it easy to secure, and the bound edges seem sturdy. It is easy to shake out and fold up and doesn't take up too much space.

Actually sand free!

I've shuffled through a couple products that claim to be "sand-free" and I can say this is the only one that has actually lived up to the challenge. The stitching around the perimeter is will done and in general it seems to be a very durable blanket we should have in our family for years to come. Only complaints: 1) There are no straps or a bag included to compress the blanket and make it storage ready, I just ended up buying some from Home Depot. 2) The material that the blanket is made out of is a little rough, which is great because it make is extremely durable, but my kids complain about it hurting their feet at the beach. Either way I think this is the best product on the market if you're looking for a ground cover or sand free beach blanket.

Great Addition to Your Camping Kit

I’ve only used this mat twice, once by a lakeside campsite, downpour at night and was completely dry by noon. The other time I used it on the North Beaches in OBX. Sand sticks to it if wet but once it’s dry( in minutes) It falls right through. Worth every Penney I got the smallest one and it’s plenty for two people and a small child. If your a family of four I would go with the 10x10. Buy this mat you will not regret it.

Works as it should

Does what it says. Pretty easy to set up, I would recommend sand or snow stakes to get it set up for a full days use, as this will help prevent trips and the edges blowing over. Sand really does fall right through, although anything larger that a regular grain will sit on top (shell etc) and wet sand needs to be worked through. Makes pack up much easier with no real shaking required, just brush off and fold.

keeps beach setup virtually sandfree

Used this today and even with muts tracking wet sand on the blanket it fell through pretty quickly. I really suggest this for beach use.
