Should be a whole lot better
We purchased two of these poles from REI for car camping only, not for backpacking or bike packing, and we use them with a 16' tarp. This is not high performance gear, and we went into this with relatively low expectations. We came away disappointed. After a short period of time, the bases began to crack and the shock cords failed on both poles. The issue is that these poles cannot be serviced. The top is compression fitted and cannot be removed, and finding new bases has proven to be elusive. So, we are left in a quandary as to whether we use a pipe cutter to remove the top and attempt to MacGyver a new connection and spend a couple of hours working on them, or toss them into the metal recycling bin and be done with them. I get it, the world is filled with disposable products destined for the ever-burgeoning landfills. Being a long-time REI member, the part I'm most saddened by is that our COOP put their name on this unserviceable and disposable product.
Lightweight & strong, but with deficiencies.
I have 2 of these REI tent/tarp poles. Lightweight & strong, but they have deficiencies. Primarily, the pole & its insertion tip are so small that it will not work with numerous major name brand shelters. The shelter/tent ringlet is too large. The REI pole when inserted into the shelter just slides down the pole. Easy & very inexpensive fix. Rubber bicycle handles from Walmart. $6.00. I cut the handle grips, then slid them on the REI pole. Problem solved. Also, the REI pole has a small, narrow width, non durable rubber base, on the bottom ground pole. Problem solved. Went to Lowe’s. Purchased chair/bar stool rubber tips. $3.00.
Easy and sturdy
While I can't speak to how well these will hold up in high winds, they seem quite sturdy and perfect for car camping. We set up a tarp over our picnic table in a spot that had no shade using two of these poles and it stood strong for 4 days. We put the spike thru the grommet in the tarp, then 2 blue lines over each spike (I know the pic looks like just one), staked down blue lines at one end, pulled the tarp taught and staked down the blue lines on the other end. Finally we pulled out the sides of the tarp and staked them down with the yellow lines. So we used 8 stakes total.
Poles Stand Up
One thing that made a difference to me that the length of the poles fit right into my sleeping pad bag. I had trouble trying to load them in my backpack.
Best find in adjustable poles.
I bought two of the 6' poles for motorcycle camping. They fold down to the same size as my tent poles, so they don't really add anything other than a bit of bulk to the load, but are well worth hauling along. The 8' poles are taller and will raise your canopy for better clearance to walk under, but are definitely bigger, bulkier, and heavier. I use these with my Noah's tarp 9 for a quick camp fly for shade or rain. They also help make a great extra cover over the tent that allows much better ventilation and minimized condensation. Handy and compact, these are the best poles I could find for my use, and I just love 'em!
great product
I own several of these poles, ten I think. I use them to set up a 10x30 tarp over our pop-up camper. They are very strong. Been through high winds and rain without an issue. They adjust easily and quickly. They knock down quickly and pack well. My only complaint is they will fill up with water in rain. I solved that problem by drilling a 1/8 inch hole in the bottom of the end cap to let the water drain out. To keep them compact when packed I attached a Velcro strap around the bottom section and wrap the three sections together when collapsed. I'm replacing three section steel poles with these and find that I need far fewer poles because these are stronger and more stable.
Great tarp pole - not so great shock cord
Bought four of the REI 8’ poles this summer 2020. On first use, found one of the shock cords was so weak that the pole sections would separate when the pole was held vertically. Rather than return the pole, it seemed an easy fix would be to just replace the cord. However, found out as others have that the shock cord can not easily be replaced, if at all. The problem appears to be that the pole tip can not be removed to gain access to the cord. A simple design correction would be a removable tip held in place by attached shock cord. Of course, returned all poles with no problem, but disappointed that had to shop else where.
Product Exactly As Represented
I initially bought two of these poles to post up the "wing corners" of a wing tarp, then bought two more to allow free standing tarp setup. The poles are light, strong, beautifully finished, easy to extend and use. When I say strong, I mean that I over overloaded each of them by pulling a centerline rope over them and then had them wind loaded to the point that 3/4" iron pipe bent. They do fill with rain when it pours, but they need only to be inverted when breaking down. Not a deal breaker by any means. Very proud of this piece of equipment and get comments like "WOW!, where did you get those things?" Might I mention that I couple them with Figure 9 line tighteners for ease of setup.
Exactly what I needed.
Need poles to make a shade canopy to attach to my Jeep. Got two of these and the Dome 4 Footprint. Set it up and home and its perfect. Cant wait to try on the next trip.
Very useful
I bought for my tarp shelter, very durable and dependable, and I have found some new functions for these poles.
