saved my high priced gear
I am disappointed with the reviews commenting on how difficult this product is to use, as I did not have these issues. In theory you are buying this product to save your expensive gear, thus you should treat the product that way. Set time aside to read all the instructions and follow them and you will not have a problem. I used this product to get my 7 year old hole-riddled mountain bike saddle bags water tight so I could use them for a kayaking trip and avoid having to buy boat specific gear. I also seam sealed all my water proof type bags and other bags. We got crazy wet but our camping gear stayed dry thanks to this product. A tip on finding and repairing holes: I went in my bathroom, turned off the lights and stuck my head in the black saddle bags while holding my headlamp outside the bag. I used a post-it-note to cover all the holes, revealed by the light and then put seam sealer in all those places, twice. My bags had over 20 holes. My other waterproof bags, I filled with water to see how badly they leaked, let them dry in the sun then seam sealed as instructed. I let them dry after sealing and filled them with water again to insure they were sealed. I was able to seam seal bags that were not even officially water proof making them so. In short, save some plastic backup garbage bags and this product, I spent zero dollars on kayaking gear, saving me and my boyfriend hundreds of dollars. I am getting ready to use the gear aid to seam seal an 11 oz 9 ft. hexagon shaped ultralight tarp I just made using an old garage-sale ultralight footprint and rain-fly material from an old tent. This product makes crafting custom gear possible, just take your time, follow the directions and save hundreds of dollars.
Good product
I bought this product at the recommendation of an REI sales associate who said it would seal my tent's seams and those of an old rain suit's. I had just purchased my tent (a used REI Quarter Dome 3T) at an REI garage sale and its seam tape had become brittle where the floor/wall seams met. The rain fly's seams needed some touchup as well. Followed the instructions and put my son inside to look for leaks as I sprayed it with the garden hose. No leaks so far. I will test it in real conditions at some point. However, it was a bit tricky to "paint" the seams with the bottle virtually right side up. May work slightly better with a small detail paint brush.
Seals, perfectly.
I've used this product, before, and I'm firmly convinced that it's the best sealer on the market. And the amazing part of this is that this sealer is water-based. Before drying, it will, for example, soak thoroughly through the threads in the seams. It also does a good job in repairing tent floors. A couple of suggestions; If you need to work in the solution in an area to permeate an area, then use the brush device. But more often, I've found that a foam applicator to be more effective and it cuts down on the waste. One of those small foam paint brushes will do, very well. I haven't used it, yet, but this product also comes in a pump-spray bottle and there are some applications for this that I've been thinking about. Hope this helps.
Fixing The Old Tent Fly
My old tent fly had taping that was flaking and peeling. REI store employee recommended this product. After removing the old taping I applied this product. The bottle comes easy application brush but I chose a little more control and used a 1/2 " art brush. This dries almost invisible and is not sticky like some seam sealers. Worked great and no leaks.
Dispenser can not be securely closed
I haven't actually tried this yet -- I'm sure it works just fine to seal needle holes in tent seams, as do a thousand other products (my rating allows the benefit of the doubt on this point). But I don't understand why the dispenser was designed so that there is no way to securely close it. The lid simply slides up and down -- could very easily work loose in my gear bag and leak all over -- not even a screw top, and no cap. Yes, I do seal my seams before I leave - but I always carry sealant with me just in case. With this stuff, I would be constantly worrying whether it will wind up all over my fanny pack before it ever makes it near the tent. I will be returning this.
Old Product? Defective Seals.
I bought two bottles of this at REI in Saint Louis and both bottles, although sealed in the package, had broken inner seals on the top of the bottle. They looked like they had just degraded with time but, as a result, the product had begun to harden inside the bottle and came out as a partially congealed rubber with little hardened balls to accompany the liquid. I ended up picking the hardened balls out of every seam in my tent. Maybe a good product if you can get one that isn't defective but I don't know how you could even verify that given that the outer packaging was intact but the inner seals to protect the product from air were defective/degraded.
Excellent
No noxious fumes to contend with the water based formulation. This product is easy to apply. Be patient and setup a well lit area to apply this on the seams. Be prepared to wait while material dries before moving the fabric to coat other areas. The cap can be twisted up or down to regulate the flow. The
Works like it should
This stuff works well. I used it to seal the seam of my tent between the floor and the side wall. It is thick and you need to take your time to apply it.
useless
next time I'm just going to buy the regular seam sealer, bought this hoping to seal my tent but after applying and drying it just looks like Elmers glue and started peeling. also it was so runny and now my tent looks like a moose humped it! used a whole bottled and my seams don't look sealed at all.
Try another sealer
This sealer went on fairly easily but after it dried it pealed just like Elmer's Glue. We used a Coleman brand seam sealer 9 yrs ago for another tent and that seal has still kept. We will looking for that Coleman brand.
