Definitely a fave
I'm an NGO photographer, so my work takes me all over the world, often in conditions where I may not have the best access to safe food and almost never can bring a camp stove with me for guaranteed heat to cook. I always bring a few camping meals with me, but after trying Omeals on a recent trip to rural Ghana, I'll always bring these going forward. This stew is hearty and satisfying, especially after I've been in the field all day and am hungry. They are a touch more expensive than other meals, but the taste is far superior IMHO, and the convenience of not having to take a stove or have the added step of figuring out a heat source for the water is well worth. This is my favorite of the Omeals I've tried, but thus far they've all been good. Definitely will be buying this regularly for work and for camping.
Easy and delicious
I tried this meal on a cold and very wet overnight backpacking trip in the PNW. I was pleased with my experience. The only hindrance to purchasing this meal again would be the amount of food you are getting vs the cost. Pro's: *It tasted amazing. The stew was way better then the freeze dried alternatives. It really hit the spot after a long day of hiking. *No stove needed. Very easy to use, and the heater worked well even in colder outside temps. *Although possibly not advised by the manufacturer - after I ate the meal, the heater in the water continued to work for some time so I wrapped the outer package (with the heater and hot water still inside) with a bandanna and used it as a hand warmer. Con's: *Small portion / low calories. I ate this quickly and it has less then 200 cals. I also brought some bread and a candy bar to complete the meal which helped. The stew needs to be supplemented with more food for a complete meal. *The package says to heat the food for 3-5 minutes. This is WAY to little time. I let mine reheat for over 10. It was piping hot after 10 minutes, but could have been left to heat even longer. 3-5 minutes is not enough time. *Expensive for what it is. $8 for a cup of soup? Price should be lower, or the meal should give more. All in all this is a great item. For shorter trips its nice to not bring a stove at all.
What were they thinking?
I bought this not realizing what it really was. The concept sounds good but in practice it is a bad idea. First of all the portion size you get in relation to the overall weight of the package is ridiculous. 170 calories for all that weight is not a backpackers idea of efficiency. I barely felt like I ate anything. My biggest complaint however is the packaging. This is an environmental nightmare for what you get out of it. One main pouch, two smaller pouches for the heating element and food. Not to mention the heating element swells up when used and retains water. All the waste was as heavy as the original package. Then you have all that plastic you have to haul out and throw away. And who knows what chemicals are in the heating element to get it hot enough to boil water. I will stick with freeze dried and a small stove.
Simple
I didn’t realize how it worked. You don’t need a heat source, just add water and the provided heat pouch and it starts steaming right away. Great for emergencies or not having a stove or fire capability. I like a large meal and it isn’t that much food so it cost a Star . 4 our 5
It’s ok, not very filling
The concept is cool, and allows you to forego a stove. Sadly, the amount of food and calories is far from sufficient for a meal, especially after you’ve done some miles. The weight is also quite poor, and this doesn’t make for good backpacking food. The stew, however, was very tasty, and quite salty.
Easy and great tasting meal
Meal was easy for my first kids first time hiking trip. They are great for those who are not ready for fires or in areas fires are not allowed. Great tasting meals, so easy to heat.
Tasty, convenient, but too small.
The quantity of food and calorie density required for backpacking is not compatible with these meals. The quality is awesome, but it takes 2 to 3 of these to meet the calories you’d need on the trail for a single meal. If they would upsize these, it would be perfect!
Quick Lunch
By far, one of my favorite camping/on the go meals. The taste is incredible and it's perfect for cold, gloomy days at the range.
Very HOT
Very flavorful HOT meal ( just for one ) Very easy to heat.
Good for backpacking
Tasted good and was a good size meal. Easy to make. Liked it.
