Smoked salmon
I brought it along as a snack when I was flying, which it was very good for - doesn't take up a lot of space; the only problem is that it is pretty messy to eat. It tasted very good in combination with a bagel and cream cheese, though. I also have it at work if I run over so that my lunch time is cut short; it's something quick and tastes well enough on its own (the smoked flavor is excellent). The only issue is that when eaten completely by itself it has a bit of a sticky dry texture to it - despite the fact that it IS packed in a lot of juice (which is why it's messy to eat).
Nasty
I work in the fishing industry and have eaten all kinds of smoked and preserved salmon and this would have to be the worst I have ever eaten. This company has very little quality control as there was a large amount of skin and bones in the package. They also include fish fat with the product which explains the incredibly nasty after taste. You are far better off paying less for the similarly packaged and better tasting (but usually worse tasting) Pink Salmon sold at your local grocery. I am surprised REI would sell this product.
Taste that stays with you
I really like these. The smoke and salmon flavors are very strong and has stayed with me for hours.. the result is that you don't get hungry quickly again. Very convenient. The only drawbacks I find are that it's difficult to get all the fish out of the package. After use, I've rolled the package up and put it in a zip lock bag, which leaked inside my backpack so I had to wash my backpack. I would like it if the manufacturer could come up with more convenient packaging. Perhaps a small biodegradable or rustable can with a pull tab would work well.
great stuff
I had three varieties of SeaBear salmon and they are all great. I ended up ordering more. There is over 20g protein per bag. A little salt and salmon is all that is in there. Lightweight and packs great. Mix with eggs or pasta, have it with cheese or on a bagel. Put it on your salad. Nothing but good salmon in that bag, no bones or cruft, fat, nothing but the good stuff. I ended up ordering a slab of salmon from them - I like their salmon!
OK for Hike Lunch
This works for a hike lunch when I'm camping and can't have anything that can't be unrefrigerated for a day or more. It's got enough calories to be the center of my lunch and tastes OK. It's not great but I don't know of anything that tastes great in that situation.
Makes a really simple, easy, and delicious lunch
I have been putting this Salmon on top of military-packaged saltine crackers, and it is absolutely delicious. The salmon flavor is outstanding. By putting it on a cracker, you get Protein, Fat, and Carbohydrates. In spite of what the packaging says, there is some "skin" mixed in with the salmon; hence the reduction of 1 star.
Great product
For a prepackaged seafood product that requires no cooking this is pretty good. It is not freeze dried but ready to eat. No, it is not a good as fresh salmon you buy and cook but you can't that along backpacking.
Excellent
It was extremely good. Meat was of good quality, flavorful, no bones, skin etc. Shared it with a friend and they completely agreed, made for a great snack and could be great on top of pasta.
Yummy in Alfredo
pared with backpacker's pantry pasta alfredo, this was GREAT
Just What Was Called For
I took a packet of this on my last backpack trip as an extra course in a meal that I knew was lacking both calories and protein. If I had known how good it would be, I'd have taken one for each of my dinners! Unlike a previous reviewer, I had no bones or skin in my packet! I will definitely throw in some of this on all future backpack trips. Additionally, I think it would be handy for almost any kind of outing. No refrigeration needed is a big plus!
