Nice, hearty meal
I decided to avoid the Backpacker's Pantry 2 serving salt bombs and go for these more boutique brands' (this and GOOD TO-GO) 1 serving pouches. This was pretty tasty with a rich flavor profile. I paired it with a half cup of couscous (add 1 cup of boiling water and let stand). I was pretty gassy the following day, but so long as your backpacking mates don't care and/or you have intestinal fortitude, I think this is a good buy. Definitely need to pair it with couscous or rice, though. There isn't much rice in the pack.
Freakin delicious vegan meal
This is one of my favorite backpacking meals. Its super hearty and oh so savory! Warm gingery, curry goodness! I love the mild sweetness of the sweet potatoes. When you are sitting on the side of a cold mountain and you crack open a bag of African Peanut Stew and that savory steam hits you in the face...holy nirvana batman, its like being back in your mama's kitchen!
Expensive for 1 serving, but I'd buy it again
This smelled great when I opened it! My first bite was so disappointing though, because even though I'd stirred it it seemed watery. I closed it for a few more minutes, then stirred it really well and everthing was a-ok! It had great flavor, texture, and was filling. $10 is kind of steep for a single serving, but I would probably get it again, and will definitely try others from this line.
Delicious vegetarian option
First time I've tried this brand, but I really enjoyed it. A few things I liked about it: Flavor was fantastic. Just the right amount of spiciness and the ingredients really went well together. I'm not a vegetarian, but I frequently eat vegetarian meals to cut down on meat consumption and this stew was very satisfying and did not leave me wanting for meat. Everything rehydrated well, no crunchy bits that should not have been. The nutrition hits a good spot for a first day meal with 430 calories where I may not need as many calories yet or perhaps combined with a snack, or someone with less caloric intake than me. (I consider the so-called "two person" meals from other mfrs as one person meals @ 600-700 calories per pouch) 10g of protein I think is quite good in a 430 calorie vegetarian meal. In terms of cooking, it takes 12oz of water and I found it rehydrated really well. I did follow the instructions of 20m + 1m per 1,000' of elevation which equated to 24m in my case. For that amount of steeping I used a meal coozy to keep it hot. I'll definitely be looking to try more meals from Heather's Choice.
Not enough rice
The flavor is good, but it doesn't have enough rice. If I get it again I'll add a bit of extra water and pair it with a bag of tasty-bites instant rice, and maybe some supplementary peanuts.
Great flavor profile!
I love this meal! The flavors were so interesting and it was very filling!
Loved this!
Honestly, this was one of the best freeze-dried meals I can recall ever eating. True, 20 minutes was a bit long to wait, but IMHO this result was very, very tasty. This meal will now be included on all of my outdoor adventures. Also liked the portion size. Single servings are what works for me.
Delicious, hearty and flavorful
I love all of the meals from Heather's Choice, and the African Peanut Stew is no exception. It is thick and hearty with a strong peanut flavor and aromatic spices that make it tasty but not hot (picante). I took advantage and bought three while on sale--glad I did! Would buy again!
I'd buy it again
This was a good purchase. It's tasty and substantial for its size. Next time, I'd make it even more filling by adding some couscous and extra water. If I had a handful of greens, those would be great to add, too.
yummy
step it up a smidge and bring a little peanut butter packet with you :)
