Delicious bean in a convenient package
A dozen cousins Cuban black beans is a delicious mix of Latin, Cuban and Creole flavors with a mild delicious flavor. The beans are cooked perfectly and are so tasty you might not stop at one serving. Which is OK because if you eat the whole bag it is only 180 calories! Not bad for a vegan, gluten free healthy meal or snack. A dozen cousin Cuban black beans comes in a zip open package, which makes it so convenient to take backpacking, biking and on the trails. It is easy to heat in a pan over an open campfire or if you’re at home in the microwave or on the stovetop. The scrumptious flavors really surprised me; I have eaten a lot of camp food and these beans will not disappoint. Also, these beans could be eaten right out the package and not heated and still be delicious. I know this because that is how I ate them! I am so happy to receive this free product in exchange for an honest review; these beans will be in my camp rotation and I may even add them to at home meals. Yes, they are that good!
Great flavor, small portion
I've eaten quite a few different pouch food like this, and this was probably one of my favorites. Finding good "premade" black beans is hard, and these were great. Had a lot of flavor, they were not over cooked or mushy, not too salty either. They cooked in a fair amount of liquid, so the beans are hiding in there and really needed a slotted spoon to serve them easier. I would certainly purchase them again. My only complaint is that it seemed like the portion size was pretty small. It was enough for a smallish portion for 2 people but that's it, certainly no leftovers.
Delicious!!!!
I received the Dozen Cousins Cuban Black Beans this week, just as I was making tacos. I decided to make the beans as a side dish. Cut the pouch, emptied the bag into a small pot, and 6 minutes later the beans were ready. I tried a spoonful right out of the pot. Delicious. Just the right amount of spices and flavoring to make the beans a hearty side dish. Then I had an idea. I added a little shredded cheese to the pot and melted it in. Then a dollop of sour cream, followed by a drizzle of hot sauce. Amazing. Gets better. I grabbed some tortilla chips and used them as mini, edible spoons. The beans were gone in a matter of minutes. In short, the beans are excellent right out of the bag. Dress them up a little and the options are endless.
Delicious and Easy
I received a free bag of the Cuban Black Bean variety in exchange for a fair and honest review. I tested the beans while on a two week mixed hiking/camping/backpacking trip. Due to its weight and packaging, I decided to make the beans while at a developed campsite instead of packing it on the PCT. The flavor was crazy good, had a nice lime twist and just a hint of heat. Cooking was easy, even on the backpacking stove with little heat control. While I’d consider this again for a car camping trip, I probably wouldn’t take it back packing due to the weight-to-macros ratios. A serving size was only 80 calories and 6g of protein. In summary: Pros- Delicious! Easy to cook, vegetarian enough for this lacto-ovo hiker, no added sugar and only 1g overall, quality ingredients. Cons-heavy for backpacking, excess scented trash to pack back out, calories/protein in a single serving insufficient for backpacking (but probably ok as a side dish or for car camping?), 2 servings but no ziplock top to close back up if you’re solo.
Delicious Trail Meal!
A Dozen Cousins Cuban Black Beans are quite tasty! The seasoning has just a hint of spice but definitely not "spicy" and delicious. We heated and ate them for lunch during a day hike along with fruit, cheese and crackers. I would love to pack them on a backpacking trip and mix in rice and sausage. Really good flavor, easy to pack, great alone or with added ingredients for a full meal. They would be great cold right out of the bag as well.
Great packaging for packing, easy use. Delish!
We can’t camp this month because of an upcoming move and our gear is in storage so I used the Dozen Cousin Cuban Beans for Sunday breakfast. Easy heating right in the bag allows me to focus on cooking. The beans made for a hearty add to eggs, arugula, cheese, tortillas, and some yogurt and salsa. These will be easy to heat and eat at our campsite. We’ll add these to our camp kitchen with rice and smoked sausage.
Delicious
Delicious!!! Healthy and easy to make while camping.
Tasty vegan black beans
The single serving packet,.emptied into a pot, heated up quickly over a campfire. The beans were tasty. A little salty, but not too much. There was enough for a snack by itself, or as the protein component of a meal for one. I would give it five stars for flavor. The reason I'm giving it four stars is because of its form and packaging. The beans come in a fully hydrated packet. This format is great for the quality of the food itself. It makes them fine for car camping or an overnight. Or for the backyard! But they aren't something I'd want to lug with me in a backpack or take with me traveling. So three stars for convenience.
Quick, Easy, and Flavorful
A Dozen Cousins Cuban Black Beans were delicious! For one meal I had them over rice and topped with guac and a fajita on the side, the next time straight up. They were quite flavorful and heated quickly in the microwave. 1/2 cup serving size is perfect for a side dish (slightly over two 1/2 cup servings per pouch). My only complaint is the sodium content: 420mg for a serving, 920mg for the container, is a bit steep and left me really thirsty. I can see having these at home for a quick meal, but probably not camping where water needs have to be carefully planned (I'd rather need excess water due to exertion, not salt intake).
Great flavor and easy meal prep
I have been trying some backpacking food trying to find easy and light ways to cook on the trail. I tried this out before going on a trail to see if I would like it (hate getting on the trail, and finding out I hate the food I brought). Tested the beans out with a salad involving, pork, rice, lettuce, tortilla and some pico. Super fast to get the beans warmed up, got me full (but not heavy), great flavors added to the beans (onions, garlic, oil and other spices are cooked in with this-so not just black beans). The packaging is super convenient and is in a bag that can placed anywhere needed in the pack (about 4 inches wide and 6 inches tall). I am a smaller girl and one package was enough for me with everything else I ate with it, would recommend one package per person.
