I am so bummed to receive these and note numerous changes for poorer. New tongue design is shorter both in width as well as point of attachment to the main boot meaning less comfort around the ankle and less waterproof puddle protection. Boot has SIGNIFICANTLY stiffer sole which doesn't fit me as well as the old model. Pull loop from top of heel is gone which I've loved on my old ones for pulling on over thick socks as well as having a clip point to my pack for stream crossings. Inside side of boot is also much narrower than the old model. Teva, shame on you for ruining such an awesome boot.
I have been a huge fan of Ahnu boots since buying my first pair around 5 years ago: no blisters, extremely lightweight and very durable. Completely changed my relationship with hiking. My first pair lasted nearly four years of decently frequent use and pretty heavy mileage at times. However, since Teva bought Ahnu, the quality has declined immensely and I no longer recommend this product. My second pair (this pair) lasted barely 4 months of moderate use before holes, ripped seams, and leather damage occurred that were so extensive that my local shoe repairman said there was nothing he could do. While I still found them comfortable and lightweight, I simply can't afford to replace them every few months because the company is cutting corners on quality. I have since been buying used pairs of the original high-quality Ahnu version of this boot online and will continue to do so unless Teva ups the durability of this boot. Overall, very disappointed and frustrated with this new model. I think the previous version was one of the best outdoor products out there, my favorite pair of shoes, and I'm sad to see them go.
I took these boots to Iceland, and they were so comfortable! I did a pretty intense day hike back home to break into them before wearing them on my trip. These boots are lightweight and waterproof, and dirt comes off really easily. I wore a pair of regular socks under my Darn Tough wool socks, and I never got a blister once! Highly recommend :)
I’ve had two pair of these boots. They are comfortable and reliable. In dry conditions, I can count on the grip for rock scrambles up and down. Not so in wet conditions, but didn’t expect that. They offer a fit I prefer—a bit wider just where the foot widens at the ball of foot, accommodating my developing bunion (I’m 51), but good hold on my mid foot and ankle. Toes never jam into the front on downhills. My only complaint is lack of cushioning. At the end of 7 miles on very moderate trails, my feet are aching. I have been using Superfeet insoles in them, but no improvement.
These are my first ever hiking shoes and I love them! I've hiked in them to Half Dome, thru Grand Canyon, and many other trails and they did not disappoint. I didn't even need to break them in. Very comfortable and lightweight. Never had a blister while wearing. I am size 8, but got shoes of size 9 to have a lot of room for the toes when going downhill. Even though 8 fit perfectly and 9 felt big, I took the advise of REI team member and did not regret. They are very easy to clean. I usually wipe the outside off with a wet piece of cloth or paper towel after longer hikes and all the sand and dust comes off easily.
I loved my older Ahnus - great fit and comfort right out of the box, no problems even on a 15 mile hike. These are the newer version - after the company was sold to Teva. The new pair had me in agony after a few miles, ended up with a bruise on my lower shin. Comparing it to the older pair, the tongue is considerably narrower and it was the edge that was pressed into my leg. Phooey - need to a find a new brand!
I'm sick with disappointment. For the past seven years, these Ahnus have been my hiking boot of choice, tennis-shoe comfy out of the box and nearly indestructible. I have bought a new pair every year for 7 years now (I am a long distance hiker, and put on about 5000 - 6000 miles a year, which is pretty good for a boot). BUT NOW! They're cutting corners. The tongue is a full inch narrower than the old tongue meaning stuff WILL get in the boot. Plus, it's not as cushioned. The handy loop at the ankle to help pull on over thick socks is gone. Also, the toe guard is smaller than the old toe guard. And you can forget about wearing these without an insole; the one that comes with the boot is paper thin. Why did they have to wreck a great model? Plus, the beautiful purple/boot is gonzo, my favorite color for years. I've only had my new pair for a week now, and compared to the old style of the past many years, it appears Teva needed to improve their profit margins by skimping on quality. Just sick with disappointment at Teva.
I spent a month in Ireland doing archaeology and I needed shoes that were sturdy and waterproof. These were absolutely perfect! At the advice of an REI staff member, I sized up from a 10 to an 11 so my toes would have some breathing room. These are the most comfortable hiking boots I have ever owned and they're also really cute! The waterproofing wasn't perfect, but thankfully for most of the year, I live in a dry area so that isn't an issue. I'm excited to continue exploring the world in them.
I had bought the old style 3 yrs ago and absolutely loved these boots. Hiked Iceland and many other mountains in WV and NC and never had any problems. I needed a new pair and bought the new ones. I had ready the reviews that the new ones were different and didn’t fit as well, but thought maybe they were wrong. THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. I was so uncomfortable in these new boots after only 2 miles in. I’m so disappointed!!! Time to find a new brand unfortunately.
It is too early for me to write a meaningful review. They fit fine and worked well on my recent backpacking trip in Yellowstone and hiking in Grand Mesa. The real test will come in how well they hold up. I previously had a pair of Merrels that were great until the tread wore off the soles. I then had a pair of Ahnus and had the same expectation of them. But they developed holes in the uppers where stitching gave out long before the tread became worn. I bought these new Ahnus because they are comfortable and also because the design is a little different than my old ones. If they hold up well, I will give them a good review.
