After destroying multiple pairs of another brand of comfy trail shoes I put these to use in August 2022, hoping the Vibram soles would be more durable. I hike cross-country, through brush and over sharp rocks all over Southern California. Averaging 40-60 miles a month these shoes have survived the sharp and spiny desert, over 13k ft on talus in the Sierras and everywhere in between. The sole finally peeled off last weekend in the San Jacinto area and I just unboxed my 2nd pair. 10 months...not too shabby for a comfy, light shoe!! I felt that there was no break-in needed but I had to swap out the insoles for ones that were much more supportive for my wider, flat feet. There's an odd bump on the bottom (I think it's meant to keep your foot securely in place) that I was happy to not feel anymore when I put in the firm insoles. These shoes drain and dry decently after deep water crossings and have great traction. The upper fabric ripped on a sharp rock a few months ago but held up fine in brush. The foam looks pretty ragged but I did not feel support/cusioning was lost over time. Old vs new side by side: you'll see the lugs have worn down a lot, but none of them fell or ripped off. I did feel a little loss in traction and perhaps should have replaced them sooner! A traditional, high quality leather boot would probably last my style of hiking much longer but I prefer NOT having to pack extra camp shoes for backpacking and don't have to immediately change out of painful boots for the drive home.
Ultra lightweight hiking boots! I’m loving the arch support. They’re incredibly comfortable. My puppy accidentally pulled me into the lakes edge… boots are definitely NOT waterproof, but they dried out pretty fast.
I loved the original Trailventure shoe. It gave more support than a trail runner but was nimble and sure-footed. I wore it on at least 1,000 miles of the CDT, on daily shorter walks, and never had a problem with my feet. The Trailventure 2 doesn't work at all for me. The forefoot is so wide that my feet move around and the bottoms of my toes get abraded. The ankle cuff is higher and thicker. I don't like the pressure on the front of my ankle when I lace it tight enough to make up for the width of the boot. And the additional thickness makes it too warm for my feet. The new boot also has a stiffer sole that makes the boot less nimble.
I have an increasingly painful bunion, and I had resigned myself to suffering through hikes after the 2-3 mile point, even wearing gel cushions between my toes. I never realized how much the shape of my old boots were contributing to the problem. These Topos are so roomy in the toe box that I have NO PAIN even without the gel cushions! I'm also very unsteady on my feet and I swear I could walk up a sheer cliff like Spiderman with the tread on these babies. The built-in lace locks hold the tightness of the laces well and keep my feet from sliding forward on the downhill side. I'll never buy any other kind of hiking boot again!
I can't thank REI enough for having such a wide selection of boots to try and an excellent return policy. I have the WORST feet: long, low volume, sensitive toes that need a lot of room, slightly narrow heel. My old boots suddenly didn't fit in the toe area and I tried every boot in store and 15+ pairs online. These boots are it and I look forward to putting them on every time! I've always had to put thick insoles in my hiking boots to add volume to the inside of the shoe and add cushion, but not these. Since my feet are long and low volume, most of the boots I tried creased painfully at the base of my toes or my toes were smushed together, but not these. Plenty of toe room, no weird creasing, tons of adjustment to the midfoot, no heel slip and comfortable like wearing a sneaker but with light ankle support! These have been great on muddy and rocky trails. I may have to buy a second pair as backup if these ever get discontinued. I urge all people with terrible feet to give these a try!
As someone with both Planter's fasciitis and Morton's neuroma in both feet, I have literally bought thousands of dollars of shoes over the past several years trying to find the magic shoe for me that will stop the constant pain. THIS IS IT! I got them out of the box, put them on, wore them home and wear them daily for 6-10 hours/day hiking, walking etc. No blisters, no problems, no regrets. In fact I bought another pair in the waterproof (WP) version in a plum color. For the first time in five years, I can walk miles without my feet screaming at me. They fit perfect from the get-go and with a little goofing with lacing on the right foot to relieve a stress point on top of my foot, it's perfect. I have narrow heels and need a very wide toe box. I normally wear a 9-9.5 in Teva sandals and in these, I am wearing a 10.5. Luckily, the shape of the shoes don't make my feet look like the Titanic. It's all good. Super cushy but quite stable and my gait has normalized because I am not walking abnormally which helps everything all up and down the skeleton. I feel much more secure and stable on steeper slopes and rocks/boulders. The ankle support for the kind of activities I undertake is quite adequate. The shoes are light and don't make a formerly injured R knee with three surgeries complain which was a problem with other heavier boots (that my feet also hated!). Like I said: Yes! Yes! Yes! And if I sound excited and relieved, boy am I! My only change in these would be a more subtle color like olive green like the color of your pursuit zero drop running shoes etc. as I am a birder as well as a hiker and try to dress neutrally. I cannot give these shoes a glowing enough review. I have had them for about 11 days, have walked about 35 miles and I am just over the moon.
These hiking shoes are Amaxing!! Wore them straight out of the box on a 10 mile 3500’ hike with no blisters or hot spots. Super cushy yet supportive. No boot bang on the descent. I’m a huge new fan of Topo brand!! Fits true to size. Especially those that need extra width in their toe box.
These boots were comfortable from the first hike. Wide toe box and correct lacing placement make these boots fit "like a glove" in all stages of the hike. Excellent soles that make feet secure in trails with lots of different topography. Slip resistant traction on wet rocks too. Breathability good enough for hiking in tropical climates and warm enough for fall weather hikes. Have not tried in cold weather hikes yet.
I was looking to replace my previous Topo Athletic hiking boots that wore out. Initially, I was disappointed that they no longer made the non-WP boot, so I tried other brands. After being disappointed in all the other ones I tried, I came back to this boot and loved it! I really like the wide toe box and its overall comfort with just the right amount of cushion and the fit around the ankle was very comfortable - the top of the tongue seems to have extra padding there. I did add an insert for more arch support. I also really like the way these lace up with a sort of locking mechanism at the ankle to keep the lace (and heel) in place. My first hike in these was 11.5 miles and my feet felt great!
OK, it took a couple tries by online ordering to get the right size for me. Ended up with a 7.5, they run about a 1/2 size larger as other reviews have stated. My local store doesn’t carry any wide toe box ladies hikers, but they happily exchanged these for me. This is my brand as I have middle aged feet and developed Morton’s Neuroma, and these are the best shoe for that, along with Altras if they are the wide toe box style. These were comfortable out of the box, and have great traction for snow, ice and rocks, though they will be my warm weather hikers. Haven’t been able to test that yet as it’s March in MT. Please keep making these boots! There is a market out there for professional outdoor women that need this foot shape in boots exclusively. Thank you for carrying these REI.
