Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable. Water proof. Stylish These are the best day hikers I have ever owned. They do not bind, tug or rub; they just comfortably support my feet. (My foot is medium width with a somewhat high arch.) I wear them for daily walks on pavement as well as hikes on uneven dirt trails. I have been impressed with the waterproofing walking across shallow creeks and in the rain. With more than 500 miles on them—mostly in the city--they are holding up very well. The black option is quite stylish around town. Now, I hope that they stay on the market--just as they are--for long time. I plan to stock up on another pair just to be sure I have a replacement when this first pair does wear out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light and Waterproof Trail Shoe I've had the shoes for approximately 3 months and use them on varied terrain for intense hiking workouts 6 days p/wk. The left shoe fits perfect and is quite comfortable. However, the right shoe, while it fits well, produces considerable pain from chaffing on my upper heel at the shoe's Achilles notch. After 3 months of wear the Achilles notch is still not broken in and I need to wear MoleFoam padding on my right heel every time I wear the shoes. Other than that, the shoes are light weight, comfortable, waterproof, rugged, and have good traction. I have narrow feet and they fit well. May not be well suited for wide feet, unless wide is offered.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Go-to shoe is good boot replacement I've been wearing these daily this winter to go to/from work and for all outdoor activity except for shoveling snow. I also wore them for a week of very rigorous hiking in the heat of southern Spain. They brought me up the Penon d' Ifach rock which is a notoriously tricky hike. They were pretty stable on rocky trails, wearing a heavy backpack. Surprisingly they are NOT that grippy on wet rock or hard packed/icy snow which is a bit scary. (I have a 10 yr old pair of Colombia snow boots that still grip on hard snow). Their extreme waterproof-ness makes my feet sweat as if I was wearing plastic bags inside the shoes. So I'd say these are best suited for very dry and/or cool conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Supportive, low-profile work shoes I bought these in Dec. to wear to work and when traveling. I have plantar fascitiis and wear supportive inserts. My toes tend to be wide while my heel is narrow. This shoe has fantastic fit for this type of foot, and left room for my gel inserts. I actually got a half-size smaller than normal. I wear them to walk my dog in the early am when the grass is wet and puddles abound. They are waterproof. I liked them so much I bought a second pair. The black are beautiful and do not look like a hiking boot. I have not hiked in them, so can't speak to that. I rotate between these and my TImeberland work boots and Northface hikers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptionally comfortable for my fussy feet I've worn this shoe quite a bit in the past two months, and it's one of the most comfortable I've ever owned. Lots of toe room, both width and depth. Supportive but not stiff. I can adjust the laces to accommodate my narrow heel and high arch. I've only done very light day hiking with them, and I like the stability, although if I were carrying weight I'd want a higher shoe. I needed to return my first pair because a defect in the notch at the back rubbed my achilles tendon, but REI's exceptional generous exchange policy made it easy. I may just buy a second pair for backup in case they stop making this shoe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DON’T HESITATE TO PURCHASE I purchased these shoes before a trip to the Pacific Northwest. I liked the waterproof aspect since I knew I would be doing a great deal of walking. While it didn’t rain, I wore these shoes the entire trip without having to break them in. They are THE most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had. They are worth every penny! Pairing these shoes with a pair of REI socks and my feet were in heaven and that’s after logging nearly 50 miles in one week of city walking. If you’re thinking about purchasing these shoes and not sure if you should invest, let me say you should absolutely do so without hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent shoe--what a buy I looked for a walking shoe for a winter European trip including a 7 day Mediterranean cruise and a 4 day stay sightseeing in Rome. I wanted a comfortable, cushioned, dark color with room in the toebox that would also take my orthotic and with pants would not look out of place in a nice Resturant or on board ship. THese shoes were perfect, and provided stability on cobblestones and up the path on palatine hill in Rome. The weather was rainy, and surfaces slippery. The shoes are definitely waterproof. They did set off the security scanners at some of the airports and I had to remove them for screening purposes. Regardless, I would buy them again, and highly recommend them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect travel shoe I bought these at the last minute (literally the day I left) for a trip to Europe where I would be doing everything from walking on cobblestones to hiking in the Alps. I LOVE THESE SHOES! I didn't get any blisters, my feet stayed dry and warm but not hot, and my feet never got sore from walking on rough terrain. I wore them every day for 3 weeks, and again when I got home. They are truly perfect for walking and light hiking.

Do these comes in narrow? Do the insoles come out to put in my orthodics

Asked by: Runningdog
Ahnu does not make these shoes in a narrow width. The stock insoles can be removed.

I have had a pair for 10 years now. They seem to be great even though I wear them almost daily in the winter. Should I replace them like running shoes after 500 miles?

Asked by: Annie
Most people find their hiking shoes need replacing after 10 years of use. It is usually a personal judgment call though and depends on how well the traction and the uppers have held up over the years.

These sound perfect for what I want. A question: are people buying them a half-size larger to accommodate socks? Or should I buy my normal shoe size?

Asked by: Emkaybee
Ahnu makes the boot with the idea that the person wearing the boot will also wear a midweight hiking sock. Our recommendation is to order the same size Ahnu boot as your street shoe.

I purchased these two years ago for last 150 km of the camino del santiago and loved them. Heading to England to do the coast to coast- Can I wear these again, given that the Coast to Coast wetter/rockier/ steeper elevations?

Asked by: getawaymom
It depends on how much wear the soles have after your first trip, but the outsoles on these boots do perform well on wet and rocky conditions.

Are these shoes good for multi day backpacking?

Asked by: Patti
For multi-day backpacking, we recommend higher cut hiking boots that provide more ankle support. https://www.rei.com/c/womens-backpacking-boots
