Great even for non-runners
I'm not a trail runner and use these for everyday occurrences like running errands and walking the dog. But due to a minor foot deformity I really need the extra padding if I'm walking more than a quarter-mile. I have another pair of Altras and a pair of Topos and like them a lot but neither are any good at keeping out even the smallest bit of moisture when it rains. While these felt a bit stiff when I put them on, and still feel a little stiff when I'm sitting, when I'm actually on my feet they feel fantastic. Glad I bought them and I think they'll be perfect for an upcoming vacation where I'll be doing a lot of sight-seeing and now I won't have to worry about rainy days.
Uncomfortable model
Last year, I purchased the Altra Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Low 2 Trail-Running Shoes and they quickly became my favorite footwear. These shoes offered an exceptional fit and incredible comfort (I have very wide feet), making every walk a pleasure. My feet felt completely at ease throughout each wear. Seeking a waterproof leather alternative this year, I decided to try the Olympus 6 Hike Low GTX Shoes. Unfortunately, these shoes were a significant disappointment. The shoe's tongue is disproportionately small, causing the internal eyelets and eyestay and laces to rub uncomfortably against my feet. During a 5-mile hike, I experienced considerable discomfort and developed very sore feet. Additionally, the shoes proved challenging to lace, particularly around the shoe's end. Due to these issues, I will be returning them to the store. While Altra has consistently delivered excellent footwear in my experience, the Olympus 6 Hike Low GTX model failed to meet my expectations for comfort and functionality.
Altra Women's Olympus 6 Hike Low GTX Shoes
Altra is a brand my feet like so it was no surprise they were comfortable right out of the box with no break-in period. I needed a comfortable leather, waterproof, and sturdy shoe with a wide toe bed for my winter walks and this shoe fit all of my criteria. I love them!
My new brand for life
For the past decade I have struggled with problem feet — bunions, burning pain under the ball of one foot, heel blisters. I have tried tape, custom orthotics, cheap inserts. I thought I had found the solution with La Sportivas and ¾ inserts but then my toes started to feel squished and they were killing me by the end of a hike. I spotted Altras at an outdoor store and was intrigued by the wide toe box so I bought a pair at REI. To my utter amazement, I don’t get blisters, I don’t need any additional inserts, and my toes have never been happier. I can walk for 10 miles and be pain-free. I have convinced three friends of their benefits, and all three are happily wearing them now.
comfort and stability
I was looking for a wide toe box everyday/hiking shoe and these fit the bill. I have Morton's Neuroma in one foot, and these provide great comfort and stability. I use them mostly on rocky terrain, but work great for going to town. All purpose!
I love love love altra
I am 51yo and i hike/walk/run at least 10 to 15 miles every day. Since May i have purchased 6 pairs of altras. I will tell anyone who will listen that they are the best i have ever worn!!!
Perfect fit for wide feet
Bought these based on a Reddit recommendation for wide feet. Spot on: no working in, perfect fit, dry in recent OR snow drop, and looking forward to wearing them in Bhutan on my next hike.
Altra the BEST - for me
I have foot issues - one with a bunion, one without, for example. Shoe fit is touch and go. I love Altra. They fit my feet really well. I don't have issues with them rubbing my heel, and I love the cushion of the soles. I am in my 70s and walk a little over 3 miles 5 days a week. These shoes make that comfortable. If they fit your foot, this brand is hard to beat.
So far so good!
Needed a waterproof trail runner for hiking in the Pacific Northwest and this one caught my eye. They were a little stiff when I first put them on but after walking around town for a few hours they already felt very comfortable. My feet have stayed dry on the few rainy hikes I’ve done so far. Can’t speak to durability but they seem like they’ll last. Sizing is a bit large so after reading reviews I went with a 9 (I normally wear a 9.5). Love the all black color!
Too stiff
I bought the black one. It felt too stiff and my toe was rubbing against the toe box. Like someone mentioned, the tongue may have been too small and causing my skin to rub against the upper side of the shoe. I love altra and I liked the look of this and it seems really durable but it was just uncomfortable 15 minutes into wearing the shoes. i returned it today
