I want to love VFFs. I really do.. The concept is brilliant, but the execution by Vibram continues to be spotty. I've owned a few pair and have had sporadic issues related to lack of durability, sole separating from upper, inconsistent fit, etc. These V-Trails appear well-made, but have sizing issues again. I usually wear size 10 or 10.5 street shoes. VFFs of size 42 are usually the perfect fit for me. However, the 42s in these V-Trails were way too short in the toes. I also noticed they felt much narrower than my last pair. Something to be aware of if you are looking to buy this model; you may have to go up a size since these seem to run small.
I'd had my misgivings about the lacing system (since I'm used to the velcro only cinch ups for my Vibrams in the past), but the shoes did amazingly well for a walk through the mall trying to find a suit for an occasion (5+ hours of walking/loping through one of the largest malls (Sawgrass Mills) in the country. The materials are a plus and the shoe seems to be as good as any of the earlier generations I've had on my feet. If your'e a Vibram Fivefingers fan, these are good. Vastly better than I was afraid they would be and they sport Vibram's new Megagrip sole material, which helps on wet surfaces and it does seem to be a win there. If you're new to "barefoot" shoes, understand that the sizing is to your FOOT and that these aren't shoes...they're "foot-gloves". You will need to figure out that the shoe needs to be as snug as possible without binding up your foot or toes. It should sit FLAT on the ground without pressing back much or at all when you're standing flat in them. As such, you will find that you are likely at least a full size smaller for these than you normally expect. My tennis shoe and shoe-shoe size? 11. My cowboy boot (and I do wear those...I do horses... X-D) is between 10.5 and 11 depending on the cut and make of the boot and it's toe-box sizing. Merrell's barefoot shoes? 10.5. These? 43 unless they're one of the insulated varieties (where I need a 44 or a 45 to comfortably get my foot in the shoe...)- which places it at 9.5->10 on the US shoe sizing.
Shoe fits well for my size 11 feet, which have a very high arch. I do mainly all barefoot running during 60f or above days and during the winter these are my go to shoes. The only small problem with my specific foot anatomy is that my little toes are sometimes a little shy in going into their little sleeve. However, I refer to my little toes as the mutant twins ( they are just little nubbies ), they look like something from " The Island of Dr. Moreau "
War cowboy boots for over 30 years pinky toe was under my other toes with the shoes my toes are separated I can finally walk and I don't have to put foam between my pinky and my other toe just to wear tennis shoes they're very comfortable I work in them all day long hike and then and just play
They felt natural as soon as I put them on. Take extra time to get used to them! It's easy to go overboard because they feel great, but you want your muscles to get used to everything.
The shoes were lightweight and had excellent grip on all terrain, loved them
Great foot feel, great fit, great looks, can wear all day without feet hurting (I use as an everyday shoe versus for running)
Love these. As soon as I put them on, I felt like this is what we are meant to wear...
I love FiveFingers. Having said that, the construction on FiveFingers for my trail running use has been inconsistent, at best, and flat-out poor, at worst. They usually develop a hole in the big toe so dirt gets in and ruins the $12 to $15 toes socks I wear. They are supposed to be rated between 500 and 600 miles but I am lucky to get any more than 350 out of them before wearing through the bottoms. (I have spoken with REI about this problem and have returned pairs to get new ones every other pair so that I get the correct amount of miles from the shoes. I sent Vibram a six-page letter with photos and a pair of my latest FiveFingers that developed the holes in the toes. That was three years ago and I have yet to hear back from them.) The last pair I bought broke when I was cinching up the laces for the first time. One of the laces came out of the little Velcro tab where the laces are held together. As I started out saying, I love FiveFingers and am going to get another pair. Hopefully, the lace won't come out of the lace holder again. If they do, I will probably just knot them together at the ends and live with it. Barefoot trail running is the only way to go and, until another manufacturer creates a better pair, I will continue to buy FiveFingers.
I wouldn't hike in any other shoe. They are perfect!
