New components, visual overhaul, still Ultra Glide

For the North American market the UG4 is a quantum leap forward from the previously released UG2. Relieve Sphere and optiFOAM specifically are new components that take an already established UG line up a full level to being a serious competitor. Visually UG4 looks overconstructed, there is a lot going on, but it is remarkably lighter in hand and underfoot than I anticipated. Weighing in at 10oz UG4 hits all of the desirables: durability, stability, responsive, confidence-inspiring, and balanced. This shoe checks all the boxes and passes the all-seasons checklist for running in the Cascades. Another homerun from Salomon!

Pretty satisfied so far

Recently acquired these shoes at Mtn Ops in Stowe, VT. The only Salomon shoe I can wear due to the wide width. Fit is good, if your feet are wider than a EE don’t bother as they’ll be too tight. Width could be a tad wider though. With a pair of lightweight socks they feel nice and snug on foot. The midsole foam that cradles the sides of your feet are a nice touch as it helps to keep you ontop of your shoe versus rolling and squishing off the side of the midsole when on uneven terrain or cornering. Grip feels good! Hopefully the tread doesn’t burn off prematurely. Happy so far! Just have to get used to the lacing system as I haven’t worn Salomon in years. Got a few miles in them on the treadmill and walking the doggo. Can’t wait to try them as they were intended, on the trails.

Have taken a chance on these

So, I owned the Ultra Glide 3 and it was an amazingly comfortable shoe - my favourite ever trail shoe. Comfortable and stable, even on rocky, technical paths. BUT, the midsole completely failed after 150km of running (I’m a heavy runner at 80kg) to the point where it was collapsing inwards. You couldn’t even walk in them. Because I loved the shoe so much, I’m really hoping that Salomon have sorted this issue for the Ultra Glide 4. They weren’t willing to warranty the 3 which means they were expecting it to fail after 150km, and I can’t seem to get them to say what they expect from these, but I’ve taken a chance and have my fingers firmly crossed.

Straight out of the box performance.

I have a selection of trail running shoes from Salomon which get regular use depending on the conditions. I've always steered clear of max cushioning on the trail but these have changed my mind. True to size, great colours (lilac ash/excalibur), super comfy and ready straight out of the box. The confidence on the ups and downs is excellent and the outersole soaks up the bumps and lumps. The quicklace system clamps the the foot in nicely and there's no pressure points or slippage when on the move. Nice toe box to allow for long days on the trails. The quality build and materials make the price of these a bargain. In my opinion, Salomon's best all round trail shoe.

Salomon hiking shoes and boots

This is my 6th pair of salomon in my possession. 2 pairs of hiking boots 3 pairs of hiking shoes. One pair of boots almost ready to throw away after 6 years and 3 Spanish caminos. I also have one pair of trail runners but i dont run. I purchase only wide fit and allow 4 to 6 weeks to wear in the footwear. By far the most comfortable footwear I have had in 60 years on this planet. To me they are worth every cent. I think i need help because i am addicted to these shoes. Fit like a glove hard wearing and exceptional quality. 3 caminos and no blisters. Camino no 4 in September. Thank you salomon

So comfortable, right out of the box

I’d been looking for a trail shoe with a decent amount of cushioning. Had been wearing a pair of Inov-8 for a few years but the sole had always felt a little thin. My friend had a pair of Asics Gel Trabuco Max and I was tempted, but my wife and I have Salomon hiking boots and low cut trail shoes which have been great, so after doing some research I visited the Covent Garden store and tried the Ultra Glide 4. They felt great in the shop, and the next day I did a gentle 10k through my local green spaces. They were great, and I’m really pleased, just the type of shoe I was after. Super comfy and grippy in a variety of off road surfaces, probably wouldn’t use them in the depths of winter in thick wet mud.

Very comfy, great for long mileage and wide feet

I bought a pair of these after struggling to find a long mileage, forgiving, and comfortable shoe for my weirdly wide feet ready for Marathon des Sables this year. I was not keen on moving away from the S-Lab shoe as I appreciate these are a better shoe 'technically', but these are just what I need. I have since bought a second pair to use for the race as these will be well used by the time it comes around in 8 weeks. These are definitely more about comfort for the long haul rather than trying to squeeze every last bit of speed out, although also not a slow shoe either.

Great trail runners!

So far these are a great pair of trail runners. I recently took them out for a 5-mile run on a rainy, muddy day and they performed really well. The traction was excellent and the cushioning stayed comfortable throughout the run. The colors are bright and vibrant, which I personally like. The lacing system works just as well as it has on my previous shoes from Salomon—secure and easy to adjust. The overall build quality feels very solid, which is exactly what I’ve come to expect from this brand. Overall, these are another winner and definitely worth the price.

Yes great quality -- great support

This version of the Ultra Glide has great support, a characteristic of Salomon sneakers, and that's the most important thing, how confident it feels on the feet. It's said to be lighter in this version and maybe so. Also, the quality of materials is excellent. As for appearance, when looking down at the toe, it's not a great-looking shoe, to me, and even looks conventional for a Salomon sneaker (compare to the old DRX Bliss, for example). I hope this isn't a change in Salomon's design philosophy, because I can buy Skechers on my own if I want to....
