good carrier but quality an issue with gen 1
Overall I like this product. It’s easy to use. Not much added wind noise actually. I put it on my roof rack. And it was easy to install. The one problem I ran into are the zippers. One of my zippers tab snapped off when I was closing it. And it’s my first time using the carrier too. Apparently the metal tab that clips the string is made really weak. It’s too thin and barely attached to the zipper. So a little tug would snap the whole tab off the zipper. I have to claim warranty now. I contacted Flated. Awesome warranty service. Took a couple days to respond but when they do, they call you. They acknowledge the zippers are an issue on the gen 1 Air-Carrier. Apparently they are getting gen 2 ones coming in on the end of June. Now the confusion for those buying from REI is whether REI will be getting gen 2 ones or still carry gen 1 ones. But Flated website would have the gen 2 ones when they come back in stock.
Great for our trip!
We purchased this after looking at multiple roof racks and storage systems. We like that it can collapse down for easy storage, since we do not have a garage. It held a good amount of our gear and we drove from Minnesota to Washington State without any issues, in a variety of weather conditions. I’m sure the Thule and Yakima hard shell cargo boxes we were looking at would have served the same purpose, but for us this worked.
Questionable Quality and Loud
I'll start by saying, I really wanted to like this air carrier. We're newer parents with 2 labs and thought this may solve our space issues without breaking the bank. I installed the medium air carrier on a newer model Kia Sorento. No roof rack. 2 of the 4 tabs for inside zippers snapped off when opening and closing the side doors after our first inflation. The base of one of the outside zippers snapped off when attempting to close it after mounting it to our roof. I figured those were all things that could be replaced if needed, but that I would take it on a quick drive around town (empty) to see how it felt otherwise. I was met with so much noise from the D-rings clanging on my sunroof that I didn't bother getting out of my neighborhood. So I returned home and loaded it with a few things to try and weigh it down. It totaled about 50 lbs. The noise was reduced until I hit 35 mph. Then it was back and as relentless as ever. I'm waiting on a pair of Flated's air-rackpads (not available through rei) to see if that might solve our problem, but I'm pretty disappointed in the build quality. I'll reiterate that I wanted to like this so much and would have been their biggest fan, but I can't in good conscience recommend it in its current state.
Great product with lots of room!
No inside frame, locks or arm supports to take cargo space away. Got the Medium one which worked great for our family and our cargo. Drove it over 800 miles in one trip and had no issues. Zippers are hard to get around the corners as some reviews mention but was able to push down on the corner to help get them around. Love the way it attaches to our rails and it only took me a few minutes to secure. Bugs came right off the front of it without much effort.
Great BUT for zipper durability...
Only used twice before both zippers broke. It blows up quickly, attaches to the roof easily, and is super sturdy, especially when attached to the roof rack. It made road tripping with a dog and a baby super convenient... BUT, we only got two trips out of it before both zippers busted, and we're now outside the return window. Really disappointing.
