Grips are junk

Poorly made grips. Top broke off after only a few uses. Poles are light, compact, and clamps work great, but not much good without grips. Outside the year warranty, no replacement or repair from REI. Disappointed. I am purchasing grips from grass stick to replace the grips. I hate to throw them in the trash. I would not buy them again.

Foam grips break off after a few years’ use

The poles themselves are fine. The issue is that the rubber grips break off at the top part after a few years’ use and render the poles mostly useless. I went into the S.F. REI store today with one of the poles, and received a stern lecture that I was “using the poles improperly”. And there are no replacement grips available. Would you buy a bicycle with non-replaceable handlebar grips? For rather expensive trekking poles, I find the non-replaceability of the FOAM UNREINFORCED grips quite ridiculous.

Bad grips

One grip broke during my third year of use. I weigh 130lb. I don’t think I am hard on these things. And now I wonder if the carbon bodies of the poles are vulnerable to fracture—mentioned in reviews as was vulnerable grips. Disappointed to learn only 1 year warranty. I recall lifetime warranties on REI products of old.

Design flaw on the grip

After my second climb with these poles, the top of the grip ripped off one of the poles. This is a design flaw as all of your weight on a decent is on the foam grip and is prone to failure.

Do not buy. Grips will fail

The grips are poorly designed and will eventually rip in two under normal use. If outside of one year warranty period, it’s tough luck! It’s a shame that REI does not offer a grip replacement. Also I remember when REI would do the right thing and replace defective item.

Looks Good, but…..

Form is better than function. Not very substantially made, a non-existent weather seal on the lid, flimsy lift struts. Way Overpriced for what it is.

Broken grip

I used these poles twice to climb in Colorado and on the second trip, the grip ripped and then fell completely off. I figured it was something that I had done until I read other reviews with the same problem!

Grips are badly designed and will fail. Bad custom

The grips tops on both poles ripped and tore and then decapitated entirely between use #3 and use #10. These were not misused. Worse the sales manager at the REI would not help me with an exchange because of course they were out of warranty. She actually told me it probably happened from underuse. Can you believe it??? Underuse made them brittle. That was her explanation. In any case don’t buy the Flash, buy a less expensive model. The less expensive ones have a more durable grip.

light but grip issues

Picked up a set last year basically new from a garage sale. They are very light and the grip is very comfortable. After a few hikes the top of the foam grip completely ripped off on both sides. I used them for a shelter and that was that. By comparison I’ve used a set of bd poles for 2 years with zero issues.
