Secure and durable

We did 2 road trips to Tahoe this winter with the skybox packed with a stroller pack and play as well as extra luggage all on our factory Q5 crossbars. The ultimate test came on one trip back to LA as we left just as the leading edge of a huge winter storm hit the basin. (The wind was so bad that our navigation told us 395 was closed due to the winds.) The wind pushed us all over the road and whipped up gravel branches and water from lakes as we drove. There were moments where I was sure we would lose the box as we took gusts of wind at highway speed but the box stayed on, stayed closed and protected our gear. Great product!

We've had two Yakima cargo boxes -- loaded and mounted properly per instructions on our 4Runner -- crack badly in the area of the four crossbar clamps. My wife and I are tent campers and backroad travelers, and we often travel unpaved roads that are typical on public lands. Not four-wheeling, just Forest Service and BLM roads. (See the photo.) Yakima, which has been responsive and attentive to our complaint, really doesn't state prominently to shoppers and end users that the boxes are for use on paved roads, or well-maintained, graded gravel roads at the worst. We believe Yakima should state this prominently. This is important to know before you buy. Great for paved roads; a costly mistake for dirt-road travel.

Great extra storage for my mazda 3 sedan

Recently used this on a trip starting at Las Vegas NV, Irvine CA, Joshua Tree CA, Phoenix AZ, and then back to NV. Trip totaled almost 1,000 miles and this cargo box worked phenomenally. I tested this for a week on a daily commute to work and didn’t notice a significant drop in MPG. Obviously once you load stuff you’ll drop MPG (I think others fail to notice that lol). The wind noise is pretty significant though. I managed to stick my faring underneath the cargo box and I think it helped reduce the noise a little. I’m weary of going over 80 mph, but other reviews suggest it’s ok going that fast. I wish I bought this sooner.

PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING YAKIMA SKYBOX !!!!

Yakima, SkyBox 16 Carbonite, BLACK, No Size - Item #876510 Order placed: 03/08/2021 BUYER BEWARE! About 4 hours in to a trip to Mammoth today (7/17/22), the top of our Skybox broke and flew off while traveling at highway speed. Luckily, no one was injured and the vehicles trailing behind us were not impacted by the top of the box or our personal belongings. The Skybox top was properly secured and locked before departure. I triple checked. The Skybox has been used previously without incident. On this occasion, the Skybox absolutely failed! I was unable to retrieve the Skybox top because there was no way to safely reattach the broken top to the bottom unit. However, I was able to retrieve some of our belongings though many of the items were heavily damaged. Our car was also damaged. I am hopeful that REI can either offer a full refund or a replacement with a more reliable cargo box. Additionally, I am hopeful that REI can offer coverage for our damaged personal items.

Expect the Skybox to fail you! Poorly designed.

REI review I have a Yakima Skybox 16 purchased through REI in 2014. After several years of frustration as an owner, the box finally left me "stuck". The locking mechanism for the external hand latches broke in the closed position. They are metal and engage a plastic peg to turn a metal rod that internally synchronizes three plastic catches to keep it closed. This tiny peg simply snapped when I tried to open my Skybox (picture attached). Yes, there are two sides for access; however, as you can see in the pictures my rig is designed for passenger side entry to the box. This is done for a plethora of reasons that I shouldn't have to compromise because of a company's poor product (see pictures and you'll understand). In addition to this lock failure, the hinges will also fail you within a few seasons of use ensuring it is still difficult to operate. The plastic hinges will warp and twist over time and fail to align the top properly. This puts extra strain on the rivets and they took will get loose and possibly fail. This means closing the box will be frustrating to do securely (opening isn't much easier). When you think it is locked... it isn't. One of the three internal catches might be off kilter thanks to misaligned wobbly warped hinges. I lost a chair somewhere on the road because the box popped open while driving. I had every reason to think my gear was secure since the key can't be removed until it is "locked". Well, because of wobbly, wonky, twisted hinges… I was misled and the box wasn't truly closed. I discovered this when I stopped for gas. I hope no one was injured. As for it's weather tightness, it is NOT waterproof. Once your honeymoon period of ownership ends you'll start to see water inside. Yes it is awesome to carry more gear, but over time you'll notice micro gaps everywhere. The hand latch, the rivets, the entire external seam will let water in when the vehicle is in motion. Water will always find a way in. I cut a Tapas mat to the shape of the box and it raised my gear ⅛" above the channels that collect water. I found out the hard way this happens (down sleeping bags don't work when wet). Add a drain hole or expect to mop up water every once in a while. Or, simply abstain from putting anything that can't get wet up top. Topping things off, I want to say a word about the company's "lifetime guarantee". I'm in the middle of an epic trip when the box failed. I need the box to carry all my cargo. Instead of replacing the box through a retailer, Yakima simply wants to refund me the purchase price through the mail because the cost of a current box is $200 over what I paid. This doesn't help me when I am 1,800 miles into a 5,123 mile trip. They essentially want me to buy another Skybox and put more money towards a product that catastrophically failed. Instead of warranting the product with repair or replacement they want to just give me money back and encourage me to spend more towards their bottom line. NO. I was told the "replacement"option is on indefinite backorder. Apparently they have no stock. Well, when I called around I found several of their retailers with new stock (REI everywhere I checked) and are happy to sell me a new one. It is a collosal blow-off to be told I have to wait indefinitely. I checked Reddit and there are people who are waiting for a year… yet new stock is still arriving at retailers. Yet another sign of a terrible company. It is not honorable to tell a customer to pay more for the product that failed. That is not customer service. "Pay additional money for the same product because it costs more today." In what world is this a reputable company's guarantee? NO. I do not recommend Yakima Skyboxes. Buy a box that is manufactured with longevity in mind. Yakima will want you to spend your money again down the line when their product fails... and it absolutely will for all the reasons I gave.

Working fantastic for our lifestyle

This is my first cargo box and I am really happy I choose this box. My main concern was if it would fit nicely on my 2010 VW GTI (small hatch back), which it does! I didn't like the idea of the box hanging too far forward over my windshield and it does slightly but overall there is no distraction while driving and it looks great! I love the locking handle, the security is nice and it really helps to be able to open the box with one hand. We have driven in rain/snow/high wind and the box preformed perfectly as other reviews state. Nothing inside ever got wet and the box stayed closed and secure. We just completed a 2,500+ mile road trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons without issue. The space provided is perfect for our camping gear and miscellaneous hiking/biking gear. This cargo box was a great choice for me.

Looks and feels solid

I bought this because my Honda 2011 Pilot was always out of room. My son and I mounted it in 5 minutes. We bought tgisnim Nashville but will travel to Florida after Irma passess. The space inside is huuuge and the locking mechanism seems solid. I took it down the highway, empty, at 75 mph and I heard nothing. I attribute this to the mounting position which in Pilot is pretty parallel to the ground. If it's this quiet empty, it will definitely be quiet when full. If you have a 4dr sedan, I suggest you adjust your crossbars to make sure they are as even as possible, so the box is straight. This box is pretty aerodynamic but if mounted elevated will generate drag. I love the strap holders inside the box to reduce shifting of cargo. To my military peeps, no 10% off from REI co-op but they offer membership which refunds 10% of all purchases at end if year. Still, solid product from a solid store.

Yakima Skybox 16

I purchased this product thinking the carbonite style material would be more durable. This was not the case. I purchased online and had it installed at the local REI. The exterior plastic near the rear lift mechanism started to crack a few years later, and two of the three bolts completely ripped out. These cargo boxes are not cheap and of course this occurs right after the warranty. These cracking issues were visible after two seasons and it completely failed before 3 years. Our family can not use this cargo box anymore in fear of it not closing. The quality of this plastic is poor and it shows in the photos. I would not recommend this brand roof rack to anyone. We are greatly disappointed

Very pleased so far

I compared a few of the Yakima rooftop boxes with Thule and overall I preferred Yakima. Not only for the look, but the sizes, shapes and quality. I needed something big enough to store snowboards and camping supplies but also not take up my entire roof (I have a ‘08 Toyota 4Runner, with sun roof) I loved the look of this box and the size was perfect for me. Driving around with it I was expecting to lose some MPG but I didn’t expect how quiet it is! No wind resistance! It was super easy to install, took minutes. I’ve had my skybox for almost 3 months. Love the fact it opens from both sides (not many do) and locks. Overall very happy with my skybox. Only thing that’s concerning might be the durability of the hinges. Hope they hold up for many years to come.

How are there practically no reviews on these boxes leaking like crazy!!?? I just returned one thinking it was defective and the new replacement leaks just as bad. Just sitting on the car in the driveway after a mild rain there's been puddles of water inside it. Further investigation and research reveals the rivets have no sealant or gaskets so water just drips down the side and right into the box! I do really like the design and latches so I might try and seal the rivets somehow myself but seriously thinking about just returning it again and finding something else. Seriously disappointing and alarming that this issue isn't addressed or advertised.
