Thule  Motion 3 Roof Box - XXL

Like most people, I did a lot of research when looking at roof boxes for my Honda Odyssey. I concluded that any brand REI carries would be a good choice, but chose the Thule over the Yakima based on overall capacity and ease of attachment. The Thule Motion has within it 4 'claw knobs' that adjust to your rack setup fast and open and close very easily. The box opens on either side, which was very helpful when attaching and loading it. An employee at REI suggested mounting the box on the passenger side of the van to make access easier, which it was. Pushing it to the middle will just make your life more difficult, even if it looks better. I stuck a motion-activated light from the dollar store inside the box for a little bit of light; it works great and I didn't need to pay for the pricey Thule-branded one. We wound up driving this box 1,200 miles—600 of them through a Nor'Easter. There was a little bit of water in the box when we opened it, but it was funneled down to the bottom channels of the box and the contents were dry, minus the one or two little things that were smushed down into the channel. The inner tie-down straps are OK, but I found bungee cords were easier to use. I also saw some comments about wind noise from the box in other reviews, but I didn't detect any additional noise during the 16+ hours of highway driving we did with it. Some Cons: Your gas mileage will take a hit. Typical highway mileage on my van is 30 MPG, and we averaged 24 MPG on the trip. However, we were driving into headwinds as well. I'm not really concerned with MPG on a once-a-year trip, but some people are. The XXL is LARGE. You will need an extra set of hands to move it around, and it does take up a lot of space in storage. It's not heavy, but it can be awkward to move around given its dimensions. Unless you are 6' 5" you will need a ladder to load and unload it when mounted. Overall, I'm very happy with the XXL and I'm glad I chose the largest box. I can't imagine going smaller having used it on a real road trip. It holds plenty and freed up a lot of room in the cabin which is essential for such a long trip. It's also attractive for what it is. Pickup and install at the store was also great; they disposed of the humungous box that it comes it, and all of the wrapping/packing material, and all of the REI guys had some good tips regarding keys/storage/usage.

It fits perfectly on the Tesla crossbars for the Model Y, even if you can't find written confirmation anywhere. You have to adjust the trunk travel setting about 1 inch down but that takes 2 seconds.

Got this a few weeks ago to be ready for a family road trip. The extra space definitely was a plus.

Purchased for use during upcoming move as well as for ski season in Utah. Shipped easily. Arrived in new/protected condition. Easy install on Honda Passport 2020 EX-L (see attached photos). Good open/close locking mechanism. Lots of internal space. Wouldn’t want anything else in a roof carrier.

Easily fits a ‘24 Pilot. Easy to adjust so you can open the hatch. Not very heavy but takes two people to get it on top of the vehicle as it’s awkward for one person. Does seem a bit flimsy but holds up just fine on 10 hr road trip with some light rain. Surprisingly Not much impact on gas mileage. Teaching point: if the key won’t turn or won’t come out, it means that not all 3 connection points are latched and something is obstructing one of them or it’s too full. You can get the middle one to latch but if the ones at the end aren’t the key will stay stuck.

Perfect, fits all the stuff we don’t need 😂 and makes room for the kiddos in the car. Very little to no noise on the highway at speed and the fact you can open from both sides is necessary. Happy with our purchase.

Our brand new Thule Motion 3 XXL has excessively loud noise and vibration at 30mph+ to the point it is hitting the roof panel of our SUV. I have mounted it as far forward and as far to the rear as possible attempting to alleviate the issue with no success. At 70mph the noise is so loud as to prevent a conversation in the vehicle. We had the previous version of the Thule Motion XXL mounted on the same vehicle and same roof racks. No issues with that model. The new version has a thinner, flimsier plastic that does not perform at speed. Thule offered no recourse after contacting customer support, so buyer beware.

Looks super sharp on my van and has insane storage area. Super easy install I would recommend this to anybody considering a purchase.

We were looking for a large roof box and the Thule Motion 3 XXL did not disappoint! We needed a cargo box to hold most if not all of our belongings to free up space in our vehicle for 5 passengers a two large dogs. This cargo box did the trick! It's super easy to install and remove using the PowerClick quick mount system. I highly recommend this cargo box. You will not be disappointed!

I bought this for a trip to Niagara Falls and it was the best decision I have made it looks great and functions extremely well.
