great shoe for any serious climber

First, I highly recommend looking at the in depth review and comparison on outdoor gear lab. I bought these specifically for working at a Boy Scout camp as a climbing instructor where I would be climbing easy stuff every day. they have done so much more than that. they are of course excellent for rocky approaches for climbs but they are also super useful for class 3-4 hikes. I also found them great for following a bunch of easy trad climbs in somewhat cold weather. unfortunately, I would not buy them for the MSRP because that is way too much (I found them for $80). another minor issue is the laces are terrible and thin (easily replaced with paracord). they can also be mildly uncomfortable hiking more than about 5 or 6 miles. great shoe, always glad to get to use them

Bad heel cup design

The latest Five Ten Teenie Guide Shoes have a taller heal-side profile that's covered with thick rubber versus their earlier versions. It is very stiff and wore blisters on the skin over my Achilles tendons. I was hiking in the desert and had to walk barefoot for several miles, which ended up burning my soles despite low 90 F. The earlier versions never had this issue as they sported a superior design. I contacted Five Ten via email but never received a return response. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN FIVE TEN. Zero customer care/service.

Great shoes. A classic.

Stealth rubber--the stickiest. I climb decently moderate stuff in these comfortably. The lacing is well-thought-out and you can cinch these down super tight when you need to. The rand is starting to peel on mine after about 4 months of moderate use. Classic poor glue job. I've never found shoes with a decently glued and/or stitched rand. I always have to re-glue my shoes after a few months, so I didn't ding the rating too much for that. I like the fit, and the tread is, well, classic, tried-and-true. It works. It wasn't broken, so 5.10 didn't fix it. These work great for canyoneering, easy climbing, scrambles, and hiking. I put some 20-30 miles on them last weekend with a decently heavy pack and they worked fine. Even did a wet canyon in the middle of that. These dried enough within 5 hours to keep hiking comfortably (although I did take the soles out before I did the canyon, so they didn't soak up as much water as they normally would).

Best approach shoes I've owned

I've used 5.10 Camp Fours backpacking for years, and before that a couple of pairs of La Sportiva shoes. Got the Guide Tennies initially to wear in town and for day hikes, but they're enough lighter and more comfortable than the Camp 4's that I decided to try them on Sierra backpacking trips this summer. They they came through 10 days with flying colors (actually now pretty much dirt grey): more than 100 miles, about half off-trail, and 4 class 2 and class 3 peaks (they're great scrambling shoes), no blisters even on a 6-day trip. They are scarred, scratched and scraped by rock and brush everywhere but on the rand and sole. The nubbins on both side edges at the front of the sole are worn down and one row on the heel is flattened, but the stitching and laces are undamaged, the rands still in place and the shoes intact. Not so great a town shoe, though--the soles mark the wood floors at home.

Great rubber, bad heel cup

I've been wearing these shoes for the past 6 months. The GOOD: The rubber on the sole is great for climbing even on wet rock. The BAD: shoes generally comfortable until you start hiking up because the heel cuff and back of the shoes is way too stiff so it falls down the heel and chafes badly causing blisters without tape. Also, I have wide feet, but have to lace the shoes down almost entirely to get them tight while climbing. OVERALL: I don't recommend this design, but hope they get upgraded to fix the heel design and overall comfort.

Great sticky approach shoe (I have the Mid height)

Very good shoe - great for use on climbing approaches, just replace the laces before using them Pros Sticky! Comfortable, supportive Cons Laces are slippery and not very good Tricky to guess size without trying on first Love this shoe, very sticky sole Not sure if I love the ankle height yet, feels a bit like it's cutting into my legs but probably just needs to be broken in. My one main complaint so far is that the laces are terrible -- so slippery, hard to tighten. I will just replace the laces though, easy fix. I also was not able to find these shoes anywhere in AZ (Tucson, Phoenix, Flagstaff) to try them on before buying, so I had to guess. My guess was far off but I talked to a Five Ten rep and she was very helpful, I was able to exchange them for the right size. It's always a bit tricky to figure out the size for these climbing shoe brands, doesn't exactly translate from street shoe size. Sizes: My street shoe size is Womens 7.5 Originally bought Mens 6.5 Exchanged for Mens 5.5, fits well My climbing shoes in this brand (Five Ten Rogue VCS Womens) are a size Women's 8.5, UK 6.0, EUR 39.5, CM250 for reference. Would definitely recommend as an approach shoe or hiking shoe if you like to scramble and rock hop a lot. Recently used them in Red Rocks (NV) and it felt like cheating to walk down slabs of sandstone. Very comfy and sticky, would buy again for sure!

Outstanding Approach and Climbing Shoes

I bought a pair of the Five Ten Approach shoes in February of 2017. The shoes came highly recommend by a longtime friend and climbing partner from Yosemite Valley. He used them hiking to and climbing Lost Arrow Spire the last time we climbed Yosemite. Even though they were used by and recommended by a trusted friend I was still a bit reluctant to order them. Had it not been for REI’s liberal return policy and 100% satisfaction guarantee program I doubt I would have taken the chance. Nonetheless, I’ve been using the Five Ten Approach shoes from REI for just under a year. They are everything I was looking for in an approach shoe, comfortable, durable, sturdy and most of all extremely dependable.

Best Hiking/Approach shoe I have ever wore

I have almost burned through two of these shoes and I will be buying a third pair when these ones are burned out. I absolutely love the sure footing I get when walking on technical terrain. Knowing no matter what I place my foot on I will have sufficient grip even with heavy packs and bulky gear on. I don't think they were designed to have the miles I put in them but they hold up great to long hikes.

Good solid shoe

Used these for the first time this week scrambling on slippery pink granite boulders and caving. Fit was good and felt true to size. A little stiff and will require some break-in. A few hot spots on my big toes and outside edge of my heels due to the extreme angles of the rock while traversing. Traction was excellent with no slippage at all. Shoes show no signs of wear yet. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the laces. They are quite thin and I don't care for them.
