I hiked around Mont Blanc and they were great. I got them on a whim a week before and didn’t get any blisters on our hike. They were really comfortable and handled the terrain well.
Beware go to REI and try these shoes on first check the forefoot flex under the ball of the foot past Merrels I I have used for decades had wonderful essential flex there they've redesigned these with the cheaper under soul and there is no flex at all. Don't be fooled with the vibram logo underneath it is a way different undersole. It still has the great midfoot support wedge but other than that it sucks. Thank goodness for Rei's guarantee so I could return these garbage shoes and go to another pair that does have the proper flex and it's even made by Merrill LOL.
Merrell made a disastrous decision to introduce this product. The source materials for this shoe are of inferior quality to the previous Speed 2 to the point that the TPU upper around the toe box rubbed blisters on my foot being worn solely inside to test the product fit….. The upper is rigid & the support panel over the toes inside the shoe where the outside upper is sewn has sharp edges & bundled threading……thus causing immediate discomfort….. Basically it’s a cheap “ plastic shoe “….!!! Totally unwearable in any trail running environment…..not worth $50….. Product will fail miserable for Merrell & will ultimately have to be marked way down to attract uninformed buyers….. Merrell over the last several years has chosen to utilize inferior source materials & cheaper manufacturing options on many of their product lines This has resulted in severe quality loss & overall customer dissatisfaction….. True outdoor enthusiasts & competitive athletes have moved to higher end brands for their gear…..
When I put these shoes on I couldn't believe the comfort. The space in the toe area is amazing along with the support all throughout my foot. This is my first experience with Merrell and after this pair it definitely won't be the last.I am quite impressed and I that is not easily achieved in footwear but Merrell delivered.
My first pair of Merrell's. Needed a pair of hiking shoes quickly, found these on sale and decided to gamble purchase without ever trying on, something I don't ever do. They arrived quickly and fit really good. After wearing all week long as my only shoe, for driving and hiking light trails every day, I was AMAZED how good these felt. I tried wearing to work (concrete floors, and pavement) and right away remembered they were hiking shoes 😆 I will now be buying Merrell again!
I purchased these hiking shoes just a few days before a week-long trek on the Alta Via 1 route through the Dolomites in Italy. I got frequent blisters with my old boots and figured that new boots without a break-in period couldn't be much worse...and I was right! These boots needed no break-in and I had no blisters or sore feet after 8 days and ~80+ miles of rugged trails. Traction is excellent and they are very comfortable.
Merrell's are my go-to shoe. I've been wearing the Moab 3 happily for some time, but ran across the Moab Speed 2 in the REI store. It's amazing what reducing the mass by a few ounces can do. I can't wait to get lots of wear out of these shoes!
Purchase this second pair of Merrell hiking shoe for hiking the Camino De Santiago in Spain. The shoe is very lite and doesn't add much weight, which makes it great for International travel. As with any good hiking shoe, you must pair it with a good pair of wool socks. Buen Camino!
I use these shoes for walking the neighborhood as well as hiking. They are extremely comfortable in both situations. I have a bad knee that sometimes requires wearing a brace when walking long distances. But with these shoes I do not have to wear the brace.
These are Hiking Shoes, not trail running shoes. I appreciate the rock plate for the rocks and roots and the Vibram soles for when the trail is slippery. I think these are a great shoe for PNW trails.
