Good shoe for a specific purpose only

In general, it's a good shoe for a specific purpose (technical, steep trails and scrambles) but it's not an all around shoe. I would describe the feeling of the shoe as clunky and awkward to walk around on level ground or just walking around town. It's very lightweight but somehow doesn't feel like it on your feet until you are on technical terrain. The lugs and outsole don't really have much give or cushion on a normal walk. However, on more technical terrain (e.g., Old Rag hike), it works very well and you can feel it grip the group and help you on the scrambles. For sizing, runs long. Would size down at least a half size. It is also a bit tricky to get on as the sock-like upper (to keep out dirt) is very tight, especially if you have wide feet. I also had a hard time getting the heels to feel like they were secure and not moving around too much; felt like they were lifting up out of place with every step. Does have a nice notch in the tongue to tuck your shoelaces into to prevent laces from getting untied. I think this would be a good extra shoe to have in the arsenal but probably not a single shoe in the bag for hiking.

Great for running and hiking

I really liked these shoes for hiking as an alternative to traditional boots, super lightweight, amazing traction, and high arch support! After my second time taking them for a spin, they felt more broken in. These are not a big fluffy running shoe as the foam is rather hard. But they do offer lots of protection underfoot from unseen rocks and roots. A good balance between minimal running shoe and max cushion. When tightened up, the laces were smooth across the entire foot, I didn’t have any tight spots that caused discomfort as can often be a problem for me towards the top of my foot. They are quickly going to become my do everything in the outdoors shoe because they’re so incredibly light, nimble, and look good.

Solid introduction for Arc'teryx

To summarize, I found this shoe to be a solid introduction for Arc'teryx into trail running. The shoe fits true to size and provides great protection across the forefoot and mid for technical trails. I found the cushion to be right. I'm not sure how it will hold up yet, as I've only done a couple technical trails and have only run in the shoe a total of 5 times so far (~30 miles). As someone that usually uses another brand, this shoe certainly did not wow me enough to make a permanent shift, especially on longer trail runs and ultras, where the shoe will not be as comfortable for hours on end. In particular, the toe box is not as wide as I'd like. But that is to be expected from a shoe intended to be a cross between trail runner and mountaineering shoe. I will use this shoe when hitting short trail runs that have highly technical terrain and/or scrambling, as the grip is great, and it will protect against hard rock kicks and bangs. I will also use this shoe for certain adventure races, where a cross between a mountaineering and running shoes is what I am looking for. Overall, this was a solid introduction by Arc'teryx into the trail running arena, and I think developing this shoe further in future iterations can create a great trail runner.

Awesome approach shoe

I’ve had these shoes for about a month and k really like them for my use. I use them as an approach shoe and not a running shoe. They are very stable as an approach shoe and I don’t have the same issue of rolling ankles that I had with my trail runners. If you’re buying this as a trail runner shoe it might not be cushioned enough but as an approach shoe it’s great. The comfort is pretty good and I find that the toe box is pretty big on this shoe. The only issue with this shoe that I’ve found is the sizing is very off. I sized down quite a bit from my street shoe size to get something that fit properly. Make sure to try these on before purchasing.

Solidly meh

My feet aren't particularly wide, but I do have very high arches. These shoes don't have nearly as much arch support as I usually like, and there is something that I can't really put my finger on about the sole that I don't like. It isn't its cushioning per se, but if I hadn't gotten these through the REI Trailblazer's program and instead had been trying them on in the store I wouldn't have gotten them. They're TOTALLY fine for low stress hiking but not what I would choose for for difficult hiking or trail running.

Very light

I was a bit skeptical buying a running shoe from a brand that isn't known for their shoes but these turned out to be great. I have been using them for off road running on ATV/mountain/dirt trails. They are VERY LIGHT for such a sturdy shoe. Price point is good for this in my opinion. They might not be a good fit for wide feet, however. My foot is narrow-ish and they fit perfect for me (e.g. I wear Bauer Vapor ice skates, which are for narrow feet.). I also had to go with shoe size smaller than what the chart recommended: I usually wear size 10M on the popular running shoe brands, the Arc'Teryx chart said 9.5M for my measured foot length but even that was too big and I ended up going with 9M.

Horribly Uncomfortable

As an avid outdoorsman and professional skier living in the PNW, I absolutely love Arc'teryx clothing and wear something from their collection almost everyday. Unfortunately, this pair of shoes is extremely uncomfortable and impossible to wear straight out of the box. I am very disappointed that I haven't been able to "break" them in after a month of trying. Sadly, this shoe doesn't meet the Arc'teryx standard that I have become accustomed to wearing. These shoes gave me blisters just wearing them around the house.

Pressure point

Sadly can't wear these. Apparently for higher volume feet. When I tightened the laces enough, there was too much material under the laces and it had to be folded over, making it a pressure point at the top of my foot. Also think the firmer midsole under the forefoot is misguided. I'd rather have cushion under foot when running down the trail and they'll scramble just fine without a firmer front.

Hi there. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Vertex Speed Low. we are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the upper and that it doesn’t align with your foot profile causing a pressure point. Your comment on the forefoot cushioning is noted as well; we’ll pass this on to the team for consideration in future designs.

Good Shoe!!

These shoes are made of great materials! Very sturdy design and very comfortable for their designed purpose. My only complaint would be that the softer foam under the heel flattens out very fast after a few runs and the toe box feels a little large for their designed purpose size of shoe I wear. But all things considered this is a solid shoe.

Great looking and functional hiking shoe

My early take on these shoes is that they're durable and great for hiking. I like the design of a form-fitting ankle as it's important to keep out dirt and rocks. Not great if you want more of a running shoe as they're too stiff and on the heavy side. But I see myself using these for long day hikes for the next couple of years.
