I bought some 'zero rise' shoes that were great, comfortable, and spacious but I ended up with plantar faciitis. I bought these and though I would not call them 'spacious' or 'comfortable', when hiking up to 14 miles in them, they did not aggravate my PF. They seemed alittle slippy on wet smooth surfaces like tiles but when out in nature I felt very firm footed. When trying them on the firmness was a slight turn off but I could tell they did not aggravate the PF so I stuck with them. I also like that to tighten or loosen you just pull or push on the latch. You dont have to undo and redo them. I wish I had bought these first.
Bought these for Rim 2 Rim in October. Only one hike so far to break them in. A little over 7 miles of mild rolling mixed grade trails and a one decent steep down and up. Shoes took a couple of miles to loosen up and then felt comfortable during the hike and milling around after the hike. Good stability in some of the rougher parts of the trails and comfortable while walking on pavement. Good arch support. Speed laces are great but the pull loop is a bit long and need to be tucked away. This is my second pair of x Ultras. Had a pair of X ultra 3’s in the past and the 5’s are so far living up to my expectations.
Awesome breathable shoe for day hiking and light backpacking. I was lucky to find this shoe as it appears Salomon has stopped making non-Gortex shoes. In summer my feet sweat a lot. For that reason I look for more breathable, NON-Goretex, shoes. Very comfortable. Excellent quality. Very supportive.
Great support, very comfortable shoe with excellent traction outdoors. Not quite as breathable as I'd like but still wearable all day long. Highly recommend.
Disappointed if this is the only color choice. Very busy for daily wear
This version is a notable upgrade from the previous version. However for me the heel pocket is too loose and I can't get a snug fit without overly compressing the mid- and forefoot because of the speed lacing system. I really wish Solomon would replace this awful lacing system with traditional laces. Hiking shoes do NOT need speed in the lacing system (these are not triathlon shoes), but they DO need adjustability to dial in the fit. Plus if the laces break, you have to replace the shoes. I place a premium a snug heel and roomy toe box and its not possible to get that with these shoes because of the silly lacing system. The X Ultra 3 had an awesome heel pocket. Too bad its so sloppy now. Traditional laces would make this the best hiking shoe on the market. Not sure I'll keep them because of the loose heel and no way to cinch them down without creating a lot of discomfort in the arch and forefoot.
These shoes replace my old Salomon Cross Hikes that I finally wore out. Like the Cross Hikes, I find these strike the perfect balance between a stiff, heavy hiking boot and a too flimsy running style shoe for both day hikes and backpacking. They're very durable and the soles provide excellent traction. I have a high arch and a narrow heel and the fit is perfect without the need for aftermarket insoles. High quality materials. The speed lacing system is convenient and I've never had it fail. Definitely recommend.
I’ve been buying X ultra from 2s. These are more stylish than the others but just hiked Sequoia National Forest and were just fine. Comfortable. Stable. Feet can breathe. The 4s don’t last very long but I recommend the 5s.
Great support and fit. First time experience with this lacing system that I now much prefer. Confirms on line reviews conclusions as top hiking shoe, which I also use as everyday shoe.
Comfy. Good support. Need more time to determine the shoe's resilience, but the shoe has passed mustard so far. Not a big fan of the laces. I'm more of a traditional shoe-lace person, but I'm giving them a chance to see if the quick-draw laces grow on me. I have only worn them twice since purchasing a week ago and both times were on short distance hikes. I was not disappointed in the shoes performance. Anxious to see how they do over the long haul.
