Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack for Lightweight Backpackers I used this pack last summer while working along the Appalachian Trail then again in the fall when I spent 3 1/2 months hiking in Nepal. I keep my gear on the lightweight side. I usually have a base weight of 10-15 pounds plus food and water, and this pack is perfect for that range. However, the pack isn't very comfortable when the total pack weight gets over 35 pounds. I like the simplicity of it. The main compartment is similar to a dry bag in that the top rolls to close. And there's just 3 stretchy pockets on the outside. Another bonus is that I can reach my water bottles easily while wearing the pack. The pack is water resistant as well, so no need for a pack cover (I still use a trash bag liner, just in case).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing pack! My spouse and I each own one of these. We've hiked with more "traditional" Osprey packs before that cost significantly more and weigh over TWICE as much before you put any gear into them. What a difference! This pack has everything you need, nothing you don't, and is quite attractive to boot. It is not, however, for people who feel the need to carry all of the comforts of home with them when they go back-country camping. We have an ultralight tent, mats, and sleeping bags, and even for a week of camping we would haul no more than 25lbs in each pack including food and water--and no more than 20lbs for a weekend. I would not put more than 35lbs in it... but if your goal is a light bag to begin with chances are that is not going to be a problem. And your joints will thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ultralight and comfortable I wanted to move towards ultralight gear and this backpack didn't disappoint. It is very light, with a large compartment to store all my items for a four day backpacking trip. Easy to store my hydration pack inside and items in the side and front mesh pockets for easy access. I thought I'd miss having bottom access to the pack, but didn't. Altogether, my pack was about 25-20 lbs. and comfortable. I think I will return it however since my friends' packs had side pockets on the waist strap and I'd love to store a few snacks or my phone for easy access.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice light weight pack! I bought a cheap pack for my wife just to make sure that she really wanted to backpack. Well the pack I bought really wasn't all that comfortable for a name brand pack. I own a ULA pack and suggested an ultralight pack. So off to REI we went to try on packs. It was down to this one and a Dueter Act. She walked around the store with both packs on forever. In the end the lightweight and minimalist design of the Crown won. She has now gone on several trips and hasn't once complained about the bag hurting her. Keep in mind this is for lightweight backpacking so under 35lbs to keep comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacement for the Vapor Trail I was looking for a replacement for my Vapor Trail which finally (after years of use) developed a hole in the front. I am 5ft 2in tall and 118 lbs. I ordered the small which arrived with a medium belt. Not sure if that was a mistake but it fit so perfectly accepted. My size pack weighs 1lb 14 oz! I was worried about the smaller buckles and strings for ties as well as the other reviews which were worried about durability. We went on a 6 night trip to the Grand Tetons which is super rocky. I was careful about placement of the pack but there is no evidence of wear. Again, because of reviews I was worried about the mesh side pockets as I use Platypus 1 liter collapsable bottles which have a somewhat sharp edge. But they also do not distend the pocket as a 1 liter nalgene bottle might. These mesh pockets held up well without damage. The top closures are a tremendous improvement over the Vapor Trail. This feature alone was enough to sell me on the pack as well as the light weight. The padding in the shoulders and hip is less substantial than the Vapor Trail but overall was very comfortable. The pack is designed for lighter weights....Thanks to my family carrying other gear, I was at about 25 lbs. I was able to put my clothes, sleeping bag, half size bear canister, toiletries with plenty of room to spare at the top. I carried my pad and water outside. I also have a small Osprey pack that fits across the front clipped to the shoulder straps which holds all items needed for the day so I did not have to go into the pack while on the trail. That little Osprey pack was also wonderful and roomy which provides much needed access which the larger pack is short on. Over all, the Crown is a great improvement over the Vapor Trail and with careful handling, think it will be durable as well.

If this bag is not fully packed would it be possible to use it as a carry on?

Asked by: karilala
I just used it as a carry on from Seattle to San Francisco. No questions asked. It folds down pretty small on the upper part, only the bottom part stays a little wider but overall pretty good compact size
