I recently went on a camping trip to Big Pine, CA. I hiked up to First and Second Lake which was about an 11.3 mile hike and roughly 6.5 hours. The Tempest 9 was perfect! I was able to fit a 3L hydration pack, my snacks, a small first aid kit and other items for the hike. I was a little worried the Tempest 9 was going to be too small, but it did the job. When it came time to selecting a size, I measured at 17"" so I could have gone with either the XS/S or the M/L, I went with the XS/S, however, wished I would have went with the M/L. The hipbelt ended up coming up to my bellybutton. Overall, I am really happy with this backpack!
I purchased this a few months ago (in a beautiful green) and have hiked with it almost daily for the last 6 months in hot AZ. It is small and light but mighty...has so many amazing features and I am all about the features - good organizational pockets in a few locations, pole storage, outside stash area, comfortable/cool back, great/easy bladder, whistle on top chest cross-strap, and my favorite part - the little mesh strip on the armhole strap where I put my chapstick. It was the perfect size for my Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike - held a lot of gear without being too heavy or cumbersome. I'm about to buy the Osprey Mira 22 for longer hikes where I need to carry rain gear/layers. LOVE Osprey!
I bought this pack at REI a few years ago after looking at lots of others. I used it for a 2 week trip hiking the Camino. Never before having needed a pack while hiking, the Tempest 9 was comfortable and easy to adapt to. The back panel supported its contents and kept my back from becoming drenched. I found it easy to access contents and very easy to slip on and off. It held my water, rain jacket, snacks, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, and camera. If you’re a minimalist, this one’s for you.
I spent hours researching to find the best backpack for multi use and after much debate I settled on the Tempest. I am so glad I made this choice! I have used this backpack for 10+ mile hikes and long days mountain biking and it does not disappoint. It has plenty of space for tools, snacks and other essentials but it is not bulky. I am 5'2"" and 105lbs so being petite I wanted something comfortable with a decent amount of storage but not a pack that would overshadow me, this bag is perfect. It allows for good back ventilation and the waist and chest straps are extremely comfortable.
Nice pack - too short. I'm 5'2" 120 lbs and have a short 16.5" torso, but the hip strap on the WXS/S hits my ribcage. Seems like a nice pack but too small for me.
I was reading the reviews and was saddened to see a not so good one... I love my Tempest! I want a new one, only because it is so-so dirty from travel and use. It is my daily driver, I keep it in the car for dogs, hikes, exploring, I take it skiing for snacks, layers, water and goodies, I take it overseas China Great Wall, South Korea Hiking, Europe day trips and for quick outings, hiking, exploring the foreign towns and cities. I am buying a new slick silver one for skiing and day hikes. I'll keep the old one for the doggies and the car. I love my Tempest!
Just got back from taking it to Glacier. Love the color and it was comfortable for the shorter day hikes. For hikes over 5 hours, the straps started to rub uncomfortably on the undersides of my arms. I definitely wished for more pockets so everything didn't collect in the bottom of the bag. I also wish the side pockets were stretchy. Taking my large water bottle out and putting it back in securely was challenging when my pack was filled. I'm 5'4 and it fit me just great around the hips and chest. I really like the small pockets on the belt area. It was plenty large enough to carry everything I needed for a full day.
Even though it’s small, it has all the features of a large pack. This is my daypack, and I like that it packs tight and has a robust waistband and internal structure. The straps and extra pockets are all useful, and cleverly designed.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my 6 year old daughter’s backpack. It is quite large for her, she is doing longer day hikes with us and just did her first 12,352 mountain. She needs more water than 1.5L, this is the this is the smallest pack that I could get to accomplish that need. It has ample room for 3L of water, lunch, rain gear, and first aid kit. She still has room to put pretty rocks she finds. I especially like the storage for trekking poles. I am looking for an 40L replacement pack for myself and Osprey is high on the list.
It’s a great pack. However, the area for the water bladder is a tight fit. I’m finding that many other purchasers of this pack experienced the same issue.
