I was in Ann Arbor for a football game with nothing but my tennis shoes. When the weather called for rain all day I knew that would not work. I picked up a pair of these boots at 1 pm for a day of tailgating and football. Standing for 7+ hours in downpours and stepping in ankle high puddles really gave these boots an immediate test. They passed with flying colors. My ankles and feet stayed bone dry. We also walked several miles in and out of town and back and forth from the stadium so I put a few miles on them right out of the box. It’s true - there is no break in period and they are comfy. Looking forward to hiking in them this winter.
I have been using the Breeze II hiking boots for years as they were my main hiking shoe. I could usually get a good year's worth of hiking (3-4 times a week) with great support. Not so with the Breeze III as they have taken away the rubber protection in the toe/heal area and reduced the sole cushion area by about 1/2. After just 3-4 hikes I could feel rocks coming through the soles that I never did with the Breeze II boot and the comfort/support was not there. Just compare the pictures between the two shoes and you will see what I mean. Very disappointed in the Breeze III and mine only lasted about 2 months before my feet started to hurt.
I bought these boots two weeks ago. They felt comfortable in the store, so I wore them on #OptOutside Friday at Dinosaur Valley State Park for a day hike. It had rained, so the terrain was wet, but that didn't bother these boots. We hiked down into the Paluxy River bed to look at dinosaur tracks and back out. These boots felt great the entire time, and provided great traction in the slippery and steep conditions. We later crossed the the river twice and back, water rushing over my boots, and my socks and feet stayed dry. At the end of the day my feet felt great. For a boot right out of the box to wear the first day in these conditions and they felt like they were already broken in with 20 miles on them, I would recommend these to everyone.
I returned a pair of vasque that the front toe rubber was coming unglued and also didn’t fit right. I found that this vasque model had a different toe box and allowed more room at the little toe. Many of the hiking boots I’ve had in the past had a shallow toe box and always had to tape up my toes on long hikes. I think that REI should expand their knowledge on which models run narrow or wide or the other characteristics such as deep or shallow heel pockets and roomy or tight toe boxes and possibly develop a measuring devise to help in getting customers a good fitting boot. The measuring device currently being used is the same device I’ve seen in the early 60s
I bought these boots about 3 weeks ago. I wore them on two short-medium length warm-up hikes and they were extremely comfortable right out of the box. Next I used them for the first big test; a 2 night backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon. We hiked about 21 miles in a 55 hour period. With the weight of a pack, these boots felt just as stable as a more heavy weight pair that I have used, these boots are lighter and allow me to be more nimble. - The final day we hiked 8 miles from the Colorado River to the South Rim. The trail we followed was quite challenging, including a few areas of boulder scrambling. Traction was good and my feet were well protected during this climb. On a few occasions, I felt some hot-spots in certain area of my feet, thinking that I may have blisters. I was pleasantly surprised to find not a single blister had formed. I would recommend them to others.
I am new to hiking. In preparation for a long hike on the AP, I began training on local trails near Raleigh. I needed a new pair of hiking boots. An REI salesman introduced me to Vasque. I had never heard of this brand and reluctantly tried them on. I was immediately impressed with their comfort but was determined to try on other brands. Each time I tried another brand/model, I came back to the GTX. Fast forward to the AP three-day hike. These boots are the real deal. I hiked nearly 30 miles in below-freezing, snowy, muddy, wet terrain and survived with no blisters! Pay the extra bucks for this boot; your feet will be happy. And trust the experts at REI.
I've only taken these out for a hike a couple times, but I love these boots. Putting them on is easy, they have three lace hooks which allow them to open up wide. This is great if you have to get them on or off in no-so-perfect conditions. It also helps open them up if you need to air them out. The laces seem sturdy and hold well, didn't have to retie them on either of my hikes. They are grippy, making it easy to get over some muddy and wet spots. Also, GoreTex, which makes my feet stay warm and dry. They were a tad loose on the top so I have some inserts which help with that. Otherwise, very comfortable and pretty light overall.
I don’t typically write product reviews, but these boots are great. When the salesman recommended them I was put off by the price...but I figured you get what you pay for, and I’m going on a hiking trip to Big Bend National Park, so I better have decent boots. I never regretted the decision. While my friends complained about feeling every rock on the trail, I never felt them. And they were reasonably light and ‘grippy’ as well, which was important on some rocky surfaces, of which there are plenty at Big Bend. I’m very glad i bought them, and I went back and thanked the salesman for recommending them to me.
First off, very well-made boots. If these work for your feet they'll be great. Don't work for my wide feet at all. As with many other "wide" hiking boots I have tried, I really question if they're just using the same lasts on their "wides" as on their "D"s or "mediums" and only making the uppers more roomy. These lasts are so narrow at the arch that the insides of my feet were over them by almost 1/2". From above they don't look anywhere near as wide as my wide Merrell Moabs. Again, if you're feet aren't wide, or maybe if they're only wide around your toes and regular width at the arch, these might be the bomb.
I had Breeze II(BRII) for the last 10yrs and it was great and I really loved it. It was time to get a new one, since I loved Vasque Breeze..........I went for the Breeze III(BRIII). I just had for few weeks and so far not impressed with it. Acr support is not good as BRII. Even though when I tried at REI store it felt ok. BRIII tongue is not padded as BRII, if you tie the boot lace tight....... top of the feet hurt due to lack of padding in the tongue. I will give some more time to "break in", will come back in few months add more comment.
