Wore rhese boots for about 5-8 miles a day in arches, canyonlands and capital reef national parks over 6 days. Very good grip on rock and traction on loose trails. Very solid boot from top to bottom. Minimal break in time. Highly recommend
After only a few seasons of wearing these boots (Quest 4s), they are no longer waterproof due to a poor toe box design. The synthetic material delaminates from the leather, allowing water intrusion. Salomon knows about this issue, yet they failed to address it in this latest version of the boot. I would not recommend this product for wet environments like the Pacific Northwest. I reached out to Salomon about this issue, figuring good customer service meant they would at least discount a different model of their shoes for me to try. They denied my claim and therefore lost a customer. I will be moving to something like a Lowa boot moving forward.
I tested these right out of the box on a 7 mile day hike in the Appalachian Mountains. The boots gripped well as I fished off a steep rock face. They did great on all surfaces and my feet are not sore, these could be the best pair of backpacking boots I have ever bought. My feet are wide and the Quest 5s have a nice wide toe box. I will be doing a lot of multi-day backpacking trips this summer. I’m looking forward to see how these perform.
I got these to do the Camino de Santiago from Sarria to Campostella. I wore these exclusively, even though I brought a pair of hiking shoes to swap every day. I ended up just using these for the entire Camino. Positives: Great waterproofing, it rained every day and my feet stayed dry; awesome ankle support - I've got weak ankles; arch support was good; I was one of few people who got no blisters or had any issues with their feet. Negative: The laces would not stay tied - I had to double knot them; going downhill the back of the shoe rubbed against the back of my achilles tendon a bit - it was hard to keep them tight for ankle support and walk downhill. Overall, I liked these boots a lot, I would rate them more like a 4.5 than just a straight 4.
This review is actually of the prior model, but the sole is identical in the current model. The sole developed a focal delamination and an opening after less than 100 miles. I did not do anything unusual and never hiked in snow or excessively wet conditions very disappointing fortunately REI took them back. Kudos to them.
I just purchased the new Quest 5. Nice boot but unfortunately the shoe lace won’t snap into the locking cleat (like the Quest 4) no matter how hard I pull on the lace. The cleat needs to be just a little wider.
I got my pair right before a 2 day backpacking trip and they did not disappoint. I wore them brand new out on the trail and despite not being broken in at all they were amazingly comfortable! It wasn’t without some mild foot soreness after 7ish miles, but it was almost always ignorable. Near the bringing of the hike I dropped my phone into a shallow stream and watched it slide face down towards a slightly deeper section. I quickly jumped into the stream to try and get it back. After about a minute and a half of searching I found it and the whole while my boots submerged in water. So I got these as I have wide feet and needed a wider toe box - but with the plethora of options out there I was spoilt for choice and unsure! Looked into these and noticed they had slightly made the toe box bigger due to complaints about the Quest 4’s which I loved but suffered because of them at the same time.. The Quest 5’s were the game changer! I broke them in at work and kept them stuffed to help for a couple of weeks before my long hike in south Wales where I was to truly see if they’d live up to the hype… which they did! Pen y Fan at 800+M was a breeze and I even swam in lakes and went under waterfalls in them.. still holding up! Salomon could drop the price a bit as a “sorry” for the Quest 4’s and maybe do more colours - but other than that.. they pulled through.
I own a pair of Salomon’s for about 10 years now. They are my favorite day hiking boot. I’ve been looking to replace them as the souls are splitting. No complaints, just lots of miles. REI didn’t have what I was looking for until now! There was a minimal break in period and they are the most comfortable boots I have! They provide protection, support and are lightweight. They are high enough to prevent rocks, grasses and twigs from getting in your boots. I just hiked 8 miles with them and no discomfort to speak of. Thanks Salomon and REI.
I’m a longtime Salomon Guy, and been using my Quest 4 GTX’s for over 6 seasons now - time for the upgrade! The new color is killer, and I ordered online in my usual US size 12. Package came, super excited…and the boot is too big. Not ‘I can fix this with a thicker sock’ just a bit too big, too big, full stop. I wear size 12 amongst the other Salomon platforms - Speedcross, Thundercross, Pulsar - so kinda surprised. Headed to brick-
