Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn't get old This is one of the few MH meals I can eat on extended backpacking trips without getting sick of it. Before I leave I open the packaging and break it down into two separate meals*, which I store in ziplock freezer bags. When ready to consume I just add boiling water and place inside a cozy until it's ready to eat. The servings divvy up well and the food travels just fine in the plastic baggies, which reduce a lot of unnecessary packaging and extra bulk. This is a tasty, creamy meal that reconstitutes well. *I don't have a big appetite so half this package, or "one serving," is plenty for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Like Home I first sampled four vendors MRE products purchased from Bill Jackson's prior to an 11 day solo Everglades adventure. Only Mountain House hit the spot with great taste! The other brands had a chemical taste in one form or another, not MH. Beef Stroganoff was a major surprise being one of the best I'd ever tasted. I'm now planning a solo circumnavigation in our 37' sailboat which will take years to complete. You can bet a large supply of Mountain House products will consumed along with fresh foods while they last. I traveled 161 miles through the Everglades in a sailing outrigger canoe. Mountain House made each nightly camp setup more tolerable knowing that good hot meals were only minutes away. I'm now sampling the classic pack to determine favorites prior to stocking the boat. To date, every MH meal has been excellent. Thank You Mountain House Paul Sedwick

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, Hearty Meal When I made this, I in no way compensated for how much water the noodles soak up... This makes a big meal, and, had I not needed the energy for the following day, I would have split it between my friend and I. The sauce is very rich, and fills you up very fast (I found it hard to finish by myself), which made it perfect for ultralight-backpacking. The only real complaint that I have is that the onions did not seem to fully re-hydrate (despite allowing the bag to be left for a good 5-10 minutes longer than the recommended cooking time), leaving crunchy bits here and there. Otherwise, it's great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beef stroganoff... We bought this several years ago (expiration date in 2018) and are getting ready to go hiking with our kids (ages 8-14). I pulled them out of our emergency kit so we could try them and let the kids vote...this was the favorite! We also tried chili beef macaroni (great flavor but macaroni and beans take longer to reconstitute), teriyaki chicken and rice (my personal fav but my daughter doesn't like teriyaki), chicken noodle, lasagna (came in second). All had great flavor and we will be buying some more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite This is my favorite go-to meal. I sometimes backpack, but usually motorcycle camp so weight isn't an issue but space is very limited. I don't usually eat beef, but I love the taste and consistency with the noodles and sauce. For variety I usually alternate this with another meal or two, but I still haven't found anything I like better. I have tried following the directions on many different freeze-dried meals and got tired of repeatedly running into lumps that weren't hot and/or fully hydrated. In other words, cold, dry lumps. Pouring water into the package, stiring it up, closing the package and waiting a few minutes as the directions said just wasn't good enough, so I gave up and just started cooking them. Now I place the dried contents and water in my JetBoil cooker, stir them up good then bring it to a slow boil, turn off the burner, stir it again and let it set for a few minutes to cool. It turns out great that way with everything at the same temperature and fully hydrated. Yes, I have to clean out the JetBoil cup, but that's very easy to do with just a little water and maybe a napkin or paper towel to wipe it out. I'm more than happy to sacrifice a little convenience for a much better result, but that's just my preference and applies to all freeze-dried meals, not just this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Meal for the Money If I'm only going to be out 1 night this is the meal I take. On multiple nights this is the only meal I double up on. The flavor is excellent and cleanup is easy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Less weight, space and food than regular package I've tasted this in preparation for an upcoming backpacking trip. I was all excited about the smaller packaging (less weight and less space) and then discovered there is less food than the regular sized package. Taste is palatable for a freeze dried meal. I would rather have more food than less weight.... And so will opt for the regular package. Although they are also more compact and therefore take up less space. So if you can do with slightly less food, and get more compact packaging in return, this might be your preference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Great This stuff was awesome. I planned my twelve year old daughter and my backpacking trip using only Mountain House products as it was a name I grew up with. With that said this is still great now.
