Wolfed it down!
This stuff is amazing. After a day of backpacking, my gf and I split one of these and we couldn't have been more happy with it. We both kept saying how good it tasted. We packed in a bottle of red wine and it went well with this. I dunno if we were just starving and the glass of wine went straight to our heads, but we really liked it. Also, I wasn't too hungry after, and we split the bag equally, so all these comments about having the whole bag for yourself might be a little exaggerated. Although, we ate other stuff too, so I guess you might want the whole bag to yourself if that was all you were going to eat, or you are a big eater. I am buying this again for sure.
Best Freeze Dried meal, by far.
Mountain House is by far the best tasting freeze dried food. The other brands just don't seem to taste right and/ or tend to have a texture problem. Mountain House gets it right. The Beef Stroganoff is my favorite and the "for two" size is just right for one hungry backpacker. It might be a little high in sodium content, but for the improved taste, I'll accept it. Also, I generally let the stuff "cook" for 5 minutes or more longer than the suggested time on the back of the bag. The bag also burns down to a very light compressible aluminium foil-like base so it's easy to pack out.
Good stuff!!!
One of my family's favorite. It's tasty and just way easy to prepare. No muss, no fuss...a little hot water and you can eat it right out of the bag. We scrape the bottom to get the last of it. Goes well with a chianti or cabernet. Just the thing to cap off a long day of hiking. Warms you all the way through and a good carb load right before bag time on a cold night. I usually wrap the bag with a fleece to keep it warm after adding the water so it'll cook all the way. Also need to stir it really well right after adding water.
Great tasting...but
This one is Good (with a capital g). Noodles are awesome, the sauce tastes homemade and fresh, the meat? Well here's where it gets weird. Instead of real beef pieces (like in the beef stew) there are these little meatball things. They aren't bad tasting, but they are a little off-puting. Think back to eating a bowl of Kix, or coo-coa puffs, or Trix...remember when they got real soggy and when you bit into them, they kinda deflated when you bit into them? Well back to the meatballs; same experience...they deflate when you bite them. I call them beef coo-coa puffs. Takes a little getting use to, but you will, and you will like this one.
Pretty Tasty!
This is a regular in my backpacking meal rotation. It is creamy and yummy but definitely not for someone on a diet (but I don't eat like I am when I backpack anyway). It is ALMOST too salty, but not quite salty enough that I don't enjoy it. I also feel like I have to let it set a few minutes longer to soften the beef. But other than that, it's pretty awesome.
Not as good as it was.
I have half a century's worth of experience with Mt. House food. The quality has waxed and waned over the years, depending on the meal. Beef Stroganoff used to be one of their best, but this most recent formulation isn't a good one. The problem is with the noodles. In a few minutes, they're soft and mushy. If you dive in after a few minutes, they're okay, but the beef is still tough. If you give it the full eight minutes, the beef is fine, but the noodles are mush. Another problem is that there is too much sauce. Not a good balance between noodles, beef and sauce. It's hard to stop people who imagine they can improve a good product. This attempt was a failure.
Even makes a good home
I prepared this for my wife and I at home. After a long week of work, I told her I would "cook" a meal. First the portion size was perfect for us. My wife is a light eater and I'm in the middle - so with her getting a portion it left about one and half portions for myself. With a little French bread it was perfect for a helping. Definitely, let this sit the full 9 minutes as listed on the bag. Ease of prep? Boil two cups of water, dump in the bag, mix and let sit. It couldn't get much easier other than eating it raw. Taste? Not bad/actually pretty good. I wished it had more mushrooms and it doesn't have the thickness and full flavor of true home cookin' but we kept looking at each other across the table with a grin. I would definitely take this backpacking/camping if you wanted home cookin without the home. Now to try the Lasagna
Surprisingly good
I was actually saving this for last because I didn't think it'd be that good but it is surprisingly tasty. I would definitely buy it again. It is a little on the salty side but after a 8 mile hike, the sodium was appreciated. It's quite hearty. Just be aware that the quoted 2.5 servings are for 1-cup servings. That's a little bigger than a closed fist. I'm 6'0, 185 lbs and I ate the whole pouch in about 8 bites.
A real meal
This along with the lasagna my favorites. I put in a freezer zip lock and roll around to crunch up. I mix up flax & chia seeds with hemp hearts & add 2-3 heaping table spoons. Roll up with masking table around it with water amount & good to go. I heat water to just below a boil so I don't have to wait to eat. Done this way is waaaay smaller than the blue bag & when done rolls up very small with tape around it.
Just Like Home
I first sampled four vendors MRE products purchased from Bill Jackson's prior to an 11 day solo Everglades adventure. Only Mountain House hit the spot with great taste! The other brands had a chemical taste in one form or another, not MH. Beef Stroganoff was a major surprise being one of the best I'd ever tasted. I'm now planning a solo circumnavigation in our 37' sailboat which will take years to complete. You can bet a large supply of Mountain House products will consumed along with fresh foods while they last. I traveled 161 miles through the Everglades in a sailing outrigger canoe. Mountain House made each nightly camp setup more tolerable knowing that good hot meals were only minutes away. I'm now sampling the classic pack to determine favorites prior to stocking the boat. To date, every MH meal has been excellent. Thank You Mountain House Paul Sedwick
