Cycling with my best friend? Heck yeah!
My son is 7 and has seriously outgrown his kid trailer (maybe dad was a little tired of hauling a ton of kid & cart, too). One of our favorite activities to do together is day-long rides, but his solo riding skills aren't honed enough for all-day riding. What to do? Enter Burly Piccolo! Not only do I get the extra help hauling us up steep inclines and rough terrain, his confidence and cycling skills have grown exponentially. Best of all, we get to continue to share long, rambling descovery expositions and all manner of adventures within! It's remarkably simple to instal the rack. The bike I use it on is older and the seat-stay brazeons are a tad too low, but it was an easy fix with the supplied straps. Once the hardware is installed, the linkage between the rack & Piccolo literally could not be simpler- push the lever, drop in place, release lever, tighten hand screw. The connection is absolutely solid and it's construction will dispel any worries of disconnecting (When I say solid- I mean SOLID!). The universally jointed coupler reduces wobble from wee wild people deciding to reach for leaves along the trail, etc. The Piccolo itself is as easily adjustable as any quality adult bicycle and can be made to fit little kids to big kids with little issue. My ONLY complaint is that the instructions don't give so much as a clue as to how to attach the front fender- so I improvised (and prepositioned it to be more effective while I was at it). A virtually unmentionable grievance, at that. We put 60 miles on it the first week alone and have plans to some multi-day bikepacking along some of the amazing canal towpath trails here in the Eastern United States this summer as well. The Burly Piccolo is as well constructed and quality as any serious entry level adult bicycle and a fantastic value. The linkage between rack & trailer bike is the simply the best, most effective, best designed and executed available today. And the experinces and memories of these epic rides with my best friend are absolutely priceless. Do yourself and your kid a favor- buy a Burly Piccolo!
A Letdown for Bike Compatibility
Unfortunately, despite no mention of limitations on REI or Burley’s website, the Moose Hitch provided does not work with all bikes EVEN IF you have the correct mounts on your bike. Burley does not provide any measurements to confirm whether your bike is compatible or other guidance. As a result, we had to return this product to the store (fully assembled) for a refund because of misleading marketing and a lack of clear information. My family and I have been longtime and loyal Burley users, but unfortunately, cannot recommend this product. Buyers beware! Even if you purchase this assuming it will work because you have the correct mounts, it may not.
Love the trailer, not the rack
We got this to replace an old Adams Trail-a-Bike, and the improvement in stability and maneuverability is amazing. The attachment goes on easily and is very secure. The gears give the kids much more opportunity to help you get where you're going. The kids love it. The cost of all this is the moose rack, which is a pain to set up (get REI to do it!) and limits what you can do with your bike once installed. You can no longer attach a rear-rack kids seat for a younger sibling. There's only a single mounting hole on the rack for a back light. The rail dips in the middle so your pannier bags will only fit in one place which might lead to heel strike.
Piccolo good purchase
Very fun to ride together and a nice way to get a few miles without exhausting your child. My child 6 yr old glides mostly but loves to pedal to help get us up small Nebraska hills. Safety note remind your child not to keep looking around you to see what's up ahead as it really throws off the balance. This took me awhile to realize why randomly I felt like the bike was Teeter tottering. The bike seems sturdy, the videos are key for a safe installation. Good purchase, we live by a great bike trail system without a lot of turns. This is a bonus as turning with the trailing bike can be a balancing act and requires a wide turn. Overall I'm happy we can ride together and so is my child.
My significant other bought this
My significant other bought this product so that our 6 year old daughter could go on bike rides with him and be safe. She absolutely loves it and that is something they do to stay active and healthy as well as being able to do something they both like to do.
Awesome!
I have been using this with my (tall) 3 year old for about 2 months. It works great, very stable, and my son loves it. It’s a little hard for him to change gears, but other that that works great.
Perfect for toddler
We bought this to pull behind our RAD E-bikes. I had hoped to attached it to mine, but it worked out better behind my husbands ( our bikes are different styles). We added a back from a Trail a bike; it fit perfectly and makes our 5yr granddaughter feel more secure. We've taken several rides and she loves it; she can peddle or rest. Although we've had to remind her that she can't suddenly lean to one side because it does throw the balance off (my husband is fairly small, so it doesn't take much)
5 Year Old & Parent endorsed
This tag-along came to us highly recommended. So far, after a few rides, we have really enjoyed it. The ride is smooth - mounted on a Salsa Warbird that required the purchase of an extra bracket to adequately install the Piccolo. Our 5 year old is stoked and digs the gears. She’s learning to “make it harder” to pedal. I was still able to install paneers on the back rack without interfering with the addition of the tagalong.
Family Ride
The Piccolo is the best solution we have found for the grandkids. We have two of them, on two different bikes. Boys can do longer and more fun rides not getting tired. We now take the 5 yr. and 8 yr. old on rides up to 25 miles. The advantages of learning gears, pace at higher speeds and experiencing navigation of tricky off road routes, will translate into better riders when they are older.
Amazing!
Our six year old isn’t able to ride a bike on her own for various reasons. The Burley Piccolo has helped her feel comfortable and confident on a bike. Our family loves to ride bikes together, my daughter is building her skills for future independent bike riding, all with an ingenious product that is stable, safe, and easy to use. You won’t regret this purchase!
