HW DUFFEL--Where Have You Been All My Life...
I recently purchased the High Water Duffel from Mystery Ranch. I had been looking for a mid-size waterproof duffel to carry expensive gear in the bed of my pick-up. The truck's hard bed cover is lockable but not waterproof. I had tried other brands but was never satisfied so I returned them. I've owned a Mystery Ranch Three-Day Assault bag for years and use it every day so when I saw that the company had introduced a 50 liter waterproof duffel I ordered one. The bag more than meets my requirements. The giant central compartment swallows as much gear as I shove into the dry-zipper opening. The dry-zipper functions smoothly every time with no snags. Per MR,s recommendation I applied zipper wax. I utilized the dry zipper wax crayon that I use for my SCUBA dry-suit zipper. The High Water Duffel's main compartment is 100% waterproof, and has been severely tested in the short time that I've owned it. The bag rode in the bed of my truck during a week long, wind-driven rain-filled Northern California road trip. The following week I used it during two days of outdoor range training occurring in continuous heavy rain and wind in Los Angeles. On both occasions the exterior of the bag was completely wet while the interior compartment and contents remained bone dry. But the waterproof exterior fabric quickly wiped dry with a towel. I like that the bag has minimal organization, which allows it to accommodate multiple large, bulky items. As my rapid deployment bag, it is currently holding both soft body armor and a hard rifle plate carrier, gun belt, holster, pistol and rifle magazines, IFAK, helmet, and light breaching tools, There is still room remaining for a jacket, combat pants and boots. The bag has two exterior mesh zippered pockets--the bag's only organization--which is perfect for smaller items such as chem-lights, markers, flashlight, goggles, waterproof notebook, and a thirty-foot nylon strap. There are four external daisy-chain attachment points running perpendicular to the long axis. I have a carabiner attached which holds door wedges. The bag can be carried as either a backpack or a traditional duffel bag. It comes with two quick detachable padded shoulder straps that can be reconfigured as a single duffle strap. There are also two reinforced carry handles on either end. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I'm actually considering buying a second High Water Duffel to carry clothing and other items on long road trips and/or to carry dry items on the deck of an operational dive boat. Mystery Ranch hit it out of the park with this one.
Excellent for campsite showers (seriously)
I bought this to take out in my kayak on overnight trips and it’s excellent for that. But where it’s been the most amazing is its usefulness when we go car camping to campgrounds. No joke. Have you ever had to bring your clothes and toiletries into a very small public shower at the campgrounds, and everything gets wet no matter how hard you try to keep it dry? This bag solved that problem for me. I’ve used it at parks from Glacier and Yellowstone to Acadia- everything stays dry. It’s not the reason why I bought it and it’s probably not what they designed it for, but it is a rockstar in that category. Make sure you buy the zipper lube wipe packets too to keep the zippers working- Night Ize sells some and that’s what I use.
Perfect Montana Travel Companion
I used this for the first time last weekend for a boondocking camp trip in the Pryor Mountains. I don't have to worry about this bag getting thrown in the back of a dusty truck or being left out in the rain. It's completely water proof with a zipper like a zip lock bag essentially. The shoulder carry straps are comfy. there are two mess pockets on the outside of the water proof bag for things you don't need to stay clean/dry. Would definitely recommend this duffel for anyone that likes to travel to dirty places. Would also be great for boating.
Great Bag
I recently purchased two High water duffel bags and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The bag exceeded my expectations by keeping all my belongings dry even in heavy rain. The material is durable, and the design is sleek, making it perfect for both outdoor activities and travel. The spacious interior and compact folding when empty is also a major plus. Overall, this waterproof duffel bag is a great investment for anyone needing a reliable and high-quality bag for any weather condition. Highly recommend it.
Very disappointed with this bag!
I'm a huge mystery ranch fan and generally love their products. However, this bag was very disappointing. I took it on a lazy tubing trip, the bag floated along beside me in the water. I was very surprised to find a fair bit of water in it after a 3 hour trip. This was a very slow, nearly standstill type of trip, so I was very surprised it was not water tight. Unclear to me how the water got in since we did not unzip the bag. I think the water just soaked in through the material.
Good but not great
This is a good waterproof bag made from outstanding materials. I removed one star because there should be zip tabs at each end of the zipper to help opening and closing the bag. Once the zipper is moving it is very smooth. The zipper hold-tabs would be helpful and give you a place to grab the bag. The shoulder pads seem to be a notch below the quality of the rest of the duffle bag. Otherwise I’m very happy with it.
Great water proofing
Bought this bag a month ago and used it on a 3 day portage in Algonquin Park. We had wet weather for the first two days and it kept my gear dry. If you are packing something lofty like a sleeping bag ensure you use the tie down straps inside or the zipper can open with enough direct pressure (leaning on it in behind me while steering). Great bag!
Impeccable design. Keeps gear dry.
I purchased this bag for a general purpose dump bag for my raft for fishing/hunting season in SW Montana. Its first use was on a late season float hunt where it spit rain and snow on us. We also piled 2 deer into the boat on top of it by the end of the day. My gear was clean and dry inside despite the conditions outside. Highly recommend.
Slightly disappointed / returned
Returned prior to using. The lack of a pull tab for opening really makes use more difficult. Since the primary users were going to be my kids for canoe camping trips, it just didn't work for them. Could also use a small internal pocket.
Workhorse of a bag
Just purchased this and used it over the weekend. Ended up in a rainstorm in the bed of my truck and held up great and kept everything dry. I plan on getting more use out of it next week on a hunt.
