One of the best tents ever! Survived a tornado

Alright you all. I’ve been meaning to write this from a couple of perspectives. I work the graveyard shift and camped with this tent in Michigan which is hot (85+ degrees most days and very humid) I bought it for its light blocking technology so I could sleep during the day. First evaluation was the light blocking. It did great. If you keep the side, lower flaps closed it is very dark even in the middle of the day in full sun. Open the flaps by the ground and that lets in more ambient light but it’s still dim in the tent. The rainfly is elevated off the screen upper tent dome so air circulates well and hot air can escape upwards and out. For this reason and the light blocking, I was able to sleep during the day in the heat with only a little tent fan going on the hottest days. This would have been impossible in a traditional tent; I’ve tried. Secondly, durability. I took the tent up and down every other week and I’m not a hyper careful person. Tent was easy to setup up and take down and folded it up easily. The bathtub floor worked well for me and only got water in it once but that was during a tornado and I left the door part open with only the screen zipped on purpose. More on that next. This tent stayed dry even in some substantial wind and rains for me with no footprint. So! This tent survived a tornado that went through the campground that brought down easily 20-30 trees. I came back from the tornado shelter, aka brick shower/bathhouse nervous of what I would find but here was my tent. All standing. The guy lines were crooked from the tent stakes partially pulled up and there was a branch sideways in my rainfly but that was pretty much it. There was some water in the tent which I was able to soak up with paper towels but I think only because I left the door part open so air could get through my tent when I decided the weather looked dangerous. A tree landed on my car and multiple trailers in the park and tents were destroyed by falling trees just to give you an idea of how strong this storm was. Bottom line after several months of field testing this is the best tent I’ve used for car camping by far. Highly recommend. Coleman did a good job with this one.

I purchased this tent for working on wildfires in Alaska, since the sun doesn´t set there, and that can make sleeping difficult sometimes. I spent 16 nights in it and had to set it up and take it down thrice, so I feel as if I´ve thoroughly tested this tent. PROS: Set up is actually quite easy, much easier than take-down, I thought. The poles slide nicely into housing on 4 corners of the tent, and you just start clipping tent material to said poles. In all, it takes about 3-4 minutes to get the tent "standing." This tent could easily sleep 4 people. It´s quite roomy inside there! CONS: While this advertises "darkroom" technology, it doesn´t achieve much of anything in that regard. The rainfly and windowpane covers are made of this black, rubbery material that blocks out light, but the tent body itself is not. Thus, unless the sun is shining directly overhead, you´re not going to notice much (if any) light reduction. I would usually head to bed at around 11PM, and the light level was such that you could read a book inside the tent without any eye strain. The notion that this tent will provide you with a dark environment is simply not true. Biggest con: this thing is *extremely* sensitive to wind. Like, it will bow over on itself in a 5mph breeze unless you thoroughly stake this sucker down with the guylines. I repeat, STAKE THE GUYLINES DOWN. Simply staking 4 corners of the tent is not enough. This wants to be a kite more than any other tent I have used. Overall, 3/10, would not recommend. Roomy, sure, but not a great piece of equipment.

Cheap (in all senses)

We picked this up as a cheap option for a desert camping trip. Compact and advertising heat and light blocking, we thought it would be a great car camping option. On our very first use, however, both poles broke - one's metal joint snapped in the wind, and the other's fiberglass (?) splintered. The shade cover is a dark material (light *absorbing*?) with no breathability/ventilation. Yes, it blocks out light, but it also blocks out air, making the inside quickly stifling. Oh, and some of the tent material also tore in the wind, speaking to cheap stitching. Overall, despite a promising offering, several problems with the design made it not make it past its maiden voyage - would not recommend.

Prone to Collapse

First time out camping with this tent on Lake Superior, and it collapsed in the middle of the night. See those bends in the poles between the "walls" and the "roof"? Yeah, they're prone to buckling at the first sign of a windy night. Not ideal.

Disintegrating Tent

I am very disappointed with this tent. I bough it in 2022, I used it in October 2023 and then again just a few weeks ago and the coversheet is disintegrating and the seams along the zipper are coming undone! I do not understand how this can happen after having used it only twice! I have shared photos of the tent as well.

Happy camper

I love this tent! It was so easy to set up and break down with pre-attached poles. The back is all mesh so it was great for ventilation or star gazing at night and still kept bugs out. Then we added the fly and it kept us dry in the drizzle. The bottom is also waterproof with a lip to keep out any pooling water on the ground. Convenient pockets inside to hold phones, wallets, keys, etc. We only had 2 people inside so there was plenty of extra space for baggage and spreading out. The darkroom feature made it so black at night I couldn’t tell if my eyes were closed or not! It also allowed me to sleep past sunrise without realizing it. It is a pretty blue color. We used an 8x10ft tarp as the footprint and the grommets lined up perfectly for staking down with extra at the front as a doormat.

Coleman won't replace the angled connectors

A lot to like about these tents, but I do agree with an earlier poster that it is VERY hard to repack it in the provided bag -- it's possible, but you have to get everything perfect. But the bigger problem is that the angled pole connectors are NOT replaceable. I was camping with my son and a night with 20-30mph winds buckled two of the angled connectors -- broke on, and bend the other completely in half (see pic). I contacted Coleman support and after a few exchanges, they finally answered: "Unfortunately, for that angled part, Coleman does not have a replacement for it." So if I want to continue using the tent, I have to fabricate my own. We've owned the tent for 5 months and used it twice. I can't recommend a product the manufacturer won't support.

Fast assembly

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So my family loves to go camping at the lake and when we do it always gets hot in the tent from the sun rising and the sun always wakes us up super early from it becoming super bright in the tent so when I seen this one that reduces the sun brightness in the tent I had to get it ! And guess what it comes in a really nice carry bag and the tent was super fast to set up I think it took about maybe 5 mins tops if that ! It fits us all with room to spare! It holds a big queen size air mattress easily and and it stays pretty dark and a nice temp inside ! And when it’s time to take down it’s really easy and fits back in the carry bag easily with no issues ! I love this tent !

Excellent light blocking!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been camping for 25+ years and this tent has a definite advantage in darkening. I got it as a possible separate tent for our kids and I think it has a definite advantage to standard tents. I was able to set it up mostly alone (with "assistance" from my 5yo), and take it down completely alone. The poles being mounted to the tent frame is a definite advantage. I did notice a few scratches or thin spots in the rainfly. Other than that, no noticeable defects.

Received Tent Already Broken in the Box

Received tent already broken. The stretchy cord has snapped and the poles were everywhere. Went to rethread poles, realized that elastic cord was faulty and about to break. Not a fun week given that I was on a week long bicycle trip.
