Lightweight shoes for trail riding and fun
From the beginning, opening the box reveals a quality product. I got these shoes for a mixed pavement and trails (gravel?) riding, as I was looking for something comfortable, and stiff for efficient power transfer, while remaining reasonably walkable (SPD cleats). Other shoes that I tested included the giro cylinder, shimano xc5, and shimano rt5. In the end, this one shoe fit the shape of my feet a little better but that may be different for everyone; I like how the boa closure adapts to the shape of your feet and how it's easily adjustable on the fly. These shoes eliminated some hot spot problems I was having with some older specialized shoes, as the sole feels more rigid in comparison. The BOA dial is fantastic as all you have to do is pop it open and the shoe comes right off, great for those long days in the saddle, or backwards when you need to leave in a hurry. I got these shoes in all black and they look nice, I don't think you could fit wide feet on these so do try them on before. The outer panels have a matte black finish with some perforations for breathability. I rode them down to 5 deg C and didn't feel they were too ventilated to warrant a shoe cover. One aspect that I couldn't appreciate from the pictures online is that the flap under the 'laces' is colored like dark soil but not quite brown nor gray. I thought this was worth mentioning if you think of buying them online. I don't think they are noticeable once you're wearing them and tightened up the straps. One thing I really would have liked is if they had incorporated reflective materials on the sides and back of the shoe.
