Great shoes for downcountry riding!

These shoes are advertised for "downcountry" type riding, and I would totally agree that is their optimal performance window. They are lightweight and offer great power transfer to the pedals with a reasonably stiff sole. At the same time, their construction is robust enough with adequate protection with toe and heel bumpers that they should last for many seasons of riding and rock bashing. They are comfortable and stable to walk in when off the bike too, and the tread has good grip on loose terrain. I have two minor complaints: 1.) I wish the cleat pocket was a little deeper, as my SPD cleats hit the ground when walking on a flat surface such as a floor; and 2.) the two Velcro straps could be bit longer and heavier duty, as it's more work to secure them tightly than it should be. Overall, I really like these shoes!

First ride felt great. No break in issues.

First ride with mtb shoes are usually painful. Due to the construction mtb clip in style shoes are stiff and need several rides before they feel good. Surprisingly I had no discomfort or numbness on my first ride of 15 miles. The shoe material moves with your foot like a good running shoe. Boa knob had plenty of slack to insert your foot and Velcro held the whole ride. Had to get off the bike on a rocky hill climb and traction was great. Only odd ball thing was the shoe tongue was shaped weird. It’s soft enough that it didn’t cause any discomfort if you wear shorty socks. Definitely would recommend.

Great MTB riding shoe

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Super impressed with this shoe. My first 2 rides were in Colorado high country on trails from 10-12,000 ft and 18-20 miles with plenty of hike-a-bike on one ride, and these were super comfortable. Most shoes show immediate wear on the soles in those conditions but these did not. The platform is also very stiff which is exactly what you want in a riding shoe to make sure power is properly transferred to the pedal, and these compare with my Sidi and Specialized in that regard. The Boa system also stands out as very easy to adjust both directions while on the move. Great riding shoe.

Great mtb shoe for riding and racing

Really great fit, comfortable on long rides and in racing conditions. I got plain black which look cool but rather understated

First pair of stiff BOA shoes

Curious to see how these hold up. Build quality is great, the shoes are stiff and breathable. They look awesome!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve worn many mtb shoes and these by far are the best due to the comfort, style and easy on-and-off.

Sizing!

Really surprised that no one has commented on the odd sizing of the shoe—other than one review claiming that these shoes run small. They don’t; quite the opposite. These run LARGE. I typically fit a 10.5 or 10; rarely an 11, never a 9.5. The 10 in these left a surprising amount of space in the toe. Just ordered the 9.5 and will update later. Also, these seem designed for large volume feet in the front half—very roomy. Two additional notes: in spite of their largeness, the heel cup on the 10s was really snug—no slippage. The roominess in the front—both volume and length—also didn’t cause the shoe to move around in any negative way, so well made. From my experience, sizing down a half size (or possibly even a whole size) is the way to go.

Sizing - Reprise

Serious alteration to my review below (edits not allowed!). Due to a mix-up of boxes/sizes, my other review is wrong. These only run slightly large. I usually wear a 10 or 10 1/2, and turns out the 10 fits me. There is a little bit extra space left but the rest of the shoe fits like a glove, so having it be slightly roomy in the toe is ok. The toe box is good for a medium or large volume foot. As others have noted, these shoes are stiff, so riders like me who are coming from pure XC shoes will be happy. Love the grip in the treads. Another reviewer mentioned that the Velcro straps don’t do much to tighten the fit, and in my experience that’s how shoes like this usually work—you get most of the adjustment from the first latch, or boa in this case. These shoes are spendy so time (years) will tell if they’re worth it.

Not the Five Ten feel Im used to

Bought these after owning Hellcat for a few years. Was hoping to get a more performance based shoe with Five Ten feel. That is not what these are. I've owned many brands of bike shoes over 30 years. These are least comfortable Ive owned. Too many problems to list them all. Also need to raise your seat sone because they stand so tall on pedals. I got the ones on sale so not heart broken but Ill be using my Hellcats until they fall apart.

Wanted to love them

Wanted to love these, but the tongue is way too stiff. Everything else about the shoe is solid, at least from trying them on, but the tongue doesn't have nearly enough flex in the end of it and digs in to the front of my ankle badly if I flex my knees forwards or try to drop my heels. Even just a few minutes of trying them on and moving around in them was enough to leave faint lines on my ankle.
